Security advisory board reconstituted

Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee today reconstituted the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) while retaining former Ambassador to China C. V. Ranganathan as its Convener.

The term of the 15-member NSAB, the country’s top body of security experts which advises the National Security Council on various issues related to internal and external security will be for a period of one year from the date of its first meeting, an official announcement here today said.

The reconstituted body which would be the fourth after the first was constituted about two years ago, was made up of top officers of the armed forces, former diplomats and defence and security experts.

According to the announcement the new members are Mr S.T. Devare, Gen V.P. Malik, (retd) Air Marshal Vinod Patney, (retd) Vice-Admiral K.K. Nayyar, (retd) Dr Leena Srivastava, Dr Charan Wadhwa, Dr Amitav Mallik, Dr M.R. Srinivasan, Mr B.K.R. Rao, Mr Arun Bhagat, Mr K M Warikoo, Prof Amitabh Mattoo, Mr Nikhil Kumar and Mr R K Ahooja.

Mr Devare retired as Secretary in the External Affairs Ministry while General Malik was a former Chief of the Army Staff. Mr Nikhil Kumar and Mr Arun Bhagat were the former Commissioners of Police in Delhi while Air Marshal Patney was the IAF strategist during the Kargil conflict.

The term of the third NSAB expired late last year and it submitted its final report, the National Security Review, to National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra on December 20 in New Delhi.
