Shabir Shah meets Azad

Democratic Freedom Party chief Shabir Shah today met Jammu and Kashmir Congress President Ghulam Nabi Azad and held talks on the electoral process as well as measures to restore peace and stability in the state.

Mr Shah had earlier met Congress President Sonia Gandhi. During his meeting with Mr Azad, he is reported to have expressed anguish over the Centre’s support for the National Conference.

Mr Ashok Bhan, convener of the Kashmir Committee, was also present at the meeting that lasted for more than one hour.

The DFP has decided not to take part in the elections as it felt that the Centre had not taken any concrete measures to address its concerns on various issues.

During his stay in Delhi, Mr Shah also met former Prime Ministers I.K. Gujral, Chandra Shekhar and V.P. Singh, CPM leader Harkrishan Singh Surjeet besides Samajwadi Party leader Mulayum Singh Yadav.

Defence Minister George Fernandes also invited him for a detailed talks last night.

Mr Shah also met Pakistan Deputy High Commissioner J.A. Gilani last evening and sought President Pervez Musharraf’s support for his peace initiative.

During his 30-minute meeting, Mr Shah apprised Mr Gilani of his talks with various political parties and his continued dialogue with Kashmir Committee headed by Ram Jethmalani.
