One-year jail for Taslima

Dhaka, October 13
Controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen has been given a one-year jail term for “hurting Islam” in her books.

Nasreen, a physician-turned writer who lives in Sweden and France, was sentenced to jail by a magistrate’s court in the southern district of Gopalganj yesterday for allegedly insulting Islam in her books and articles.

The verdict was handed down three years after a case was filed against Nasreen in 1999. The sentence would be effective from the date Nasreen is arrested.

The writer faces several charges of blasphemy in different Bangladeshi courts. Nasreen fled Bangladesh after some radicals threatened to kill her in 1994 and has since lived in self-imposed exile in Europe. IANS
