Ludhiana, October 11
Gurmail Singh, a brother of former Ferozepore SSP Gurcharan Singh Pherurai, was nabbed today morning from Barsal village near Sidhwan Bet by the Jagraon police.

He had been evading arrest.

The arrest coincided with the refusal for several weeks of anticipatory bail to the former SSP, his brother Gurmail Singh and another relative Haridial Singh, all wanted in different cases by the Jagraon police. The bail applications filed separately by the three accused were rejected by Mr V B Handa, District and Sessions Judge in a single order.

Mr Mukhwinder Singh Cheena, SSP Jagraon police district said the police has dug out four guns along with 70 live cartridges from a field near Bassian village, where these were buried allegedly by Pherurai or his relatives, before being on the run. The police has also arrested Sadhu Singh, in whose fields the weapons were buried.

The police has also seized a Maruti car, the accused was using for going about. The accused failed to furnish papers of the vehicle but only said the car was given to him by Pherurai.

The guns and cartridges were dug out in the presence of a magistrate. The licences of these guns were, allegedly, got prepared along with several other fake arms licences, during Pherurai’s posting as SSP, Ferozepore.

Mr Cheena said Gurmail Singh visited Barsal village today to meet Mohan Singh, a family friend. He was coming out of the village in his car, when a police party led by DSP Raikot, H.S. Brar caught him. He will be produced in court tomorrow.

He said the car recovered from him has been impounded under Sections 102, Cr PC. Mr Cheena said the police was on the trail of Pherurai and his relatives but missed a few chances to nab them. He was confident of nabbing Pherurai and other accused soon.

Gurmail Singh was booked along with Pherurai and other under Section 489 of the IPC a month ago. Mr Cheena hoped to learn a lot about Pherurai’s movable and immovable property and other activities from the interrogation of his brother.

He said the guns recovered from the fields were purchased from Malhotra Gun House, Ferozepore. Majority of the arms figuring in the fake arms licences scandal were purchased from this shop only.

Passing the order, the judge said that at this time no opinion was being expressed on the merit of the case. he said at the same time it is made out from the police file that during the investigation of this case, Rs 54,66,561 was recovered from various commission agents and that this amount had been given to them on interest, allegedly by Pherurai. He also observed that the accounts of the son and wife of the former SSP show a transaction of Rs one crore during his tenure as SSP Ferozepore.
