7-yr-old crushed to death
Chandigarh, October 11
A seven-year-old boy was crushed to death by a speeding truck on the road dividing Sectors 55 and 56 here today. The boy, Sumit, lived in Palsora Colony No. 2. The truck driver, reportedly, abandoned the truck and fled after a boy called Sanjay (16) climbed the vehicle and forced him to stop it.

The Sanitation Committee of the Municipal Corporation today asked an Indian arm of the French company, Vivendi Environment, to conduct a survey in a part of the city for taking up its comprehensive cleaning.

The open spaces around Corbusier’s capitol complex appear loose and unarticulated. Most roadsides in Chandigarh do not present an articulated treescape. These observations were made by Prof Ravindra Bhan, eminent landscape architect and ecological planner of the country.

International convention on tourism today

The city will host a two day International Tourism Convention, starting tomorrow. Organised by the Chandigarh Tourism Department, CITCO and the Forum of Educators and Scholars of Tourism, this convention is expected to be attended by diplomats, government and tourism officials, intelligentsia, academicians, scholars, educators, authors, writers, and visionaries from India as well overseas.

PUDA opposes Revenue Dept instructions

Jain for probe into land allotment

3 booths sealed for non-payment of dues

The Estate Office today sealed three booths in the township, allegedly for non-payment of dues totalling to Rs 41 lakh. A team of officials led by Estate Officer, Ms Monica Mallick, and the Assistant Estate Officer, Mr Vijay Bhardwaj , went to Sectors 8 and 11 in the morning to seal the three booths — two in Sector 8 and one in Sector 11.

Water shortage irks villagers

On the one hand a large number of residents of Gharuan village are facing drinking water shortage and on the other hand a tubewell installed by the Public Health Department there has not been working for the past seven years. The village has a population of 10,000.

Tension developed between traders of Sector 17-A and a parking-lot contractor after the man allegedly tried to install pillars in the market corridor with the help of the Municipal Corporation staff. The police had to be called.

5 incidents of vehicle theft in city

At least five cases of vehicle theft have been reported from different parts of the city. Mr Ranjai Sanadi reported that his white Maruti Esteem-LX (CH-01-P-8155) car was stolen from a parking lot in Sector 17 yesterday.

PU panel apathetic to youth welfare

Only a select few seem interested in youth welfare activities at Panjab University despite the university having a full-fledged department for the purpose. This is evident from the fact that no meeting of a special sub-committee constituted by the university to study ‘weightage to be given to students for participation in youth welfare activities’ could be conducted for the want of sufficient members.

Ujwal Nagar’s vocal recital at Pracheen Kala Kendra this evening gathered considerable applause. The block level Primary School Games :2002 of Block I concluded in Government Primary School, Devi Nagar, about 2 km from here today. As many as 500 boys and girls from 70 schools (divided in 10 centres) participated in the games organised in collaboration with the local Rotary Club.
