Editors Guild decries attack on Editor in J&K

New Delhi, September 18
The Editors Guild of India has strongly condemned the attack on Srinagar Times Editor Sofi Ghulam Muhammad.

“This is yet another attempt on the part of Pakistan-sponsored militants to muzzle the Press, especially when the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir elections has brought forth the enthusiasm of the people to take part in the democratic process”, the President of Editors Guild of India, Mr Hari Jaisingh, said in a statement issued here today.

While urging the Jammu and Kashmir Government to provide the requisite security to Mr Mohammad, the Editors Guild believes that the machinations of the terrorists run counter to the democratic spirit of the country and “their violent methods will not cow down the people from exercising their franchise freely and fearlessly” Mr Jaisingh said.

UN group calls for truce in Kashmir

New Delhi, September 18
In a significant move, the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) today asked all parties involved in the Kashmir issue to observe a ceasefire to foster the practice of tolerance and living together in peace.

Its appeal came in view of the U N General Assembly deciding to observe September 21 each year as the International Day of Peace. UNI
