Congress misleading farmers on drought
relief: Chautala
Our Correspondent

Fatehabad, September 18
Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala today accused the Congress of misleading people on the issue of drought in the state in respect of compensation to farmers. He was addressing INLD workers here in Ram Sewa Samiti Dharamshala. The meeting was organised in connection with the September 25 Jind rally of the party on of 89th birth anniversary of former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal. Haryana Finance Minister Sampat Singh, INLD president Sher Singh Badshami, senior party leader Mani Ram Godara, MP, Dr Sushil Indora and MLAs Nishan Singh, Leela Krishan and Jarnail Singh were present.

Ridiculing the Congress demand of Rs 10,000 per acre as relief, Mr Chautala said that total land under cultivation in Haryana was one crore acres and the compensation as demanded by the Congress would come to Rs 10,000 crore. He said total budget of Haryana was Rs 1800 crore. He said Congress leaders spoke without caring for facts. He said that Mr Bhajan Lal became Congress president by making a false claim to Ms Sonia Gandhi that he would topple the government in three months.

The Chief Minister claimed that 33,000 projects in the state had been completed and work on 6,235 projects was in progress. The Deputy Commissioners had been asked to complete these by October 2,2002.

He said that the party was celebrating birth anniversary of Chaudhury Devi Lal on September 25 and he had come to invite them to that function.

Mr Sampat Singh said that the government had been working to implement the slogan of the former Deputy Prime Minister Bhrishtachaar Band and Bijli Pani Ka Parbandh (No to corruption and provision of power and water for farmers). He said despite drought the government provide sufficient power and water to the farmers.

President of the INLD Sher Singh Badshami also spoke.

Our Correspondent

Bhiwani, September 18
Congress leader and president of Krishak Samaj Shamsher Singh Surjewala lashed out at the Centre and state governments for their “anti-farmer” policies here and said farmers and labourers were facing financial crisis because of liberalisation policies.

Addressing a press conference at the PWD rest house, he said the INLD and the Akali Dal could not protect the interests of the farmers.

Admitting factionalism in the party, he said: “The Congress is a democratic party and not like other parties where only a few leaders are allowed to speak”.

He said the Central Government was not declaring the MSP for crops on time, adding that the prices of urea, seeds, pesticides and other agricultural appliances had shot up.

He said the Chief Minister had not given any clarification or reacted to the statement of Union Minister Ajit Singh on drought.

Chandigarh, September 18
A meeting of the Congress committee constituted to prepare the case of the party for putting up before the Delimitation Commission will witness the rare spectacle of Mr Bhajan Lal, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Mr Birender Singh sitting across the table. The meeting, being held here tomorrow, will be presided over by Mr Bhajan Lal. Both Mr Hooda and Mr Birender Singh confirmed that they would take part in the meeting convened by HPCC chief Bhajan Lal.

Mr Bhajan Lal has been addressing a series of rallies after becoming the chief of the HPCC. Mr Hooda, who was replaced by Mr Bhajan Lal, and Mr Birender Singh, who was named as one of the probables for the HPCC chief’s post till Mr Bhajan Lal pulled out a surprise on him, had refrained from attending any of these meetings. Their absence from the rallies had made it clear that unity in the Haryana Congress was difficult to achieve.

When asked what made him decide to attend tomorrow’s meeting, Mr Hooda explained that the exercise being carried out by the party to put up before the Delimitation Commission was an important matter which he would not like to ignore. “I have always said that I shall take part in AICC programmes and any other programme which will further the interest of the party in the state”, Mr Hooda said.

Similarly, Mr Birender Singh, himself a former HPCC chief, said that a line must be drawn between the events being organised to felicitate Mr Bhajan Lal on becoming the HPCC chief and the programmes which were genuinely important. Tomorrow’s meeting, according to Mr Birender Singh, falls in the latter category and merits his attendance.

Army launches anti-spy campaign
Our Correspondent

Hisar, September 18
Wire after the Asghar Ali spying case which rocked the Army establishment here a few months ago, the Western Command’s Liaison Unit has launched a campaign to prevent the recurrence of any such case.

The unit has detailed its 7th Det (Det) here to snuff out any Pakistani agents around Army establishments in the southern and western Haryana. The detachment has carried out general verification of all outsiders residing in the villages and towns around Army establishments in the past few weeks. Officers of the detachment have been addressing meetings of villagers where the locals have been asked to keep vigilant and report the presence of outsiders to the Army authorities.

In these meetings army officers are giving villagers handy tips to detect suspects through their tell tale actions. The Army authorities verified antecedents of even migrant labourers employed in villages around the military stations. Similar steps have been taken in the case of shopkeepers around these stations.

According to official sources there would be no let-up in the campaign.

A Pakistani spy Asghar Ali was caught here a few months ago. His interrogation left the security agencies red in the face. It was found that he secured ration card on the recommendation of a Municipal Councillor. He was planning to marry a local woman and buying a house here when he was arrested. He ran a shop in front of the local military station and remained in touch with his superiors in Pakistan through the Internet.

Since then security in the military station and the surrounding villages has been stepped up.
