SC order ‘exposes bluff of Leftist historians’ New Delhi, September 13 The BJP spokesperson, Mr Arun Jaitley, said in a statement that the judgement of the Supreme Court in the NCERT case had exposed the bluff which “politically committed Leftist historians had been propounding in the minds of young children”. “History textbooks had become an instrument for those Leftist historians for denigrating Indian religions and various communities that live in India. The NCERT deserves to be congratulated for having halted the politicisation of these textbooks for the past few decades”, Mr Jaitley said in a statement. He said that the whole campaign on the saffronisation of textbooks was an ideological bluff. Nothing had been said in the review of books which was derogatory to any of our religions, he said. “Those historians who stood exposed for having perverted history teachings to young minds had raised the campaign. The Supreme Court judgement has called off the bluff conclusively”, Mr Jaitley said. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) said the court order should be seen as a victory for Dr Joshi who had become a victim of the sustained onslaught by the “wreckers in academaia”. The entire controversy about the so-called saffronisation of education was politically motivated and was raised by some elements with vested interests to thwart Dr Joshi’s consistent efforts to bring in reforms in education, RSS spokesman Ram Madhav said. “The Supreme Court has ruled that there was nothing objectionable about the study of religious education in schools. These elements should stay away from the educational arena, leaving it free of all politicisation,” he added. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) described the court judgement as a “slap on the face of Leftists” and demanded a public apology from those who filed public interest litigation in the court against the National Curriculum Framework. In a statement, Delhi VHP general secretary Rajendra Prasad also demanded an apology from all those politicians who had stalled the proceedings in Parliament for several days on the issue. |
BJP to hold Dalit Sangam Sammelan New Delhi, September 13 The Dalit
Sammelan, which will be addressed by Chief Minister Narendra Modi as part of his ongoing gaurav
yatra, will be attended among other Dalit leaders by Union Ministers Ashok
Pradhan, Satyanarain Jatiya and Sanjay Paswan, BJP’s All-India General Secretary Anita Arya and senior Dalit leader from Uttar Pradesh Ramapati
Shastri. According to party sources, there is a realisation in the party that it cannot bank on the polarisation of Hindu votes in the wake of the recent communal violence, but should strive to woo various sections of the society, including Dalits. “BJP is the only party which could fulfil the aspirations of Dalits and other weaker sections of society. All other parties, especially the Congress, has all along been using Dalits as a mere vote bank,” Mr
Pradhan, who will be among the main speakers in the sammelan tomorrow, told The Tribune here today. “Can anyone deny the fact that only the BJP Government has maximum number of Dalit and SC/ST members in the Cabinet. Four Cabinet Ministers and six Minister of State are Dalits or belong to the SC/ST community,” Mr Pradhan said, adding that the BJP has the maximum number of Dalit and SC/ST Members of Parliament. |

Manisha refused to comment on the discussion during the two-and-a-half-hour-long hearing with Joint Secretary (Films) Anjali Chib Duggal and Deputy Secretary Vishwajeet Sahai. “What should I say?” Manisha asked mediapersons waiting in the corridor. Centre trying to usurp forest institute Bhopal, September 13 The Ministry recently put out an advertisement (No. 12-12/2001-RT) inviting “application for appointment to the post of Director, Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal”. The faculty members say this is a blatant misuse of the powers bestowed on the Board of Governors of the Institute. The advertisement, issued in the name of
D.M.Shukla, Deputy Inspector-General of Forests (RT), lists for the post of Director “essential qualifications” which is also contrary to the rules governing the Institute. The institute was registered under the Madhya Pradesh Societies Registration Adhiniyam, 1973, on January 15,1982. Its registered office is located in Bhopal. It, though, receives grants from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests. As per the terms of the memorandum of the Association, IIFM has a Board of Governors entrusted with the responsibilities of “general superintendence, direction and control of the affairs of the society
(IIFM)” as well as to “create teaching, administrative, technical, ministerial and other posts under the society, including post of Director and to make appointments thereto”. Rule 18 says that appointment to the post of Director shall be made by the Central Government but “From a panel to be drawn up by the board from amongst faculty members and such other suitable persons with forestry, management, or administrative background.” |

BJP, Cong flay Pervez’s speech New Delhi, September 13 In a statement, BJP spokesperson Arun Jaitly said General Musharraf’s fulminations against India, in his address to the United nation’s General Assembly, were in keeping with his hostility towards India. He said General Musharrf held a farcical referendum and was planning a farcical poll. “Such a dictator should have audacity to refer to election in any part of India as farcical is indeed laughable,” Mr Jaitley said. The spokesperson said participation of the people of the valley clearly demonstrates that the local population had opted for democracy. “It is only the militants, actively aided by the Pakistan and its supported agencies, who are bent upon creating fear and terror in the minds of the people in order to prevent a large turn out which is expected. General Musharraf must remember that the Jammu and Kashmir election is a fight between Indian democracy and Pakistani terror,” he said. The BJP said General Musharraf’s refernces to Gujarat were wholly unwarranted. “The Indian state, unlike Pakistan, abhores theocracy.... Whenever social tensions have occurred, whether in Godhra or in Gujarat, the Indian state and its democratic institutions stand with one voice against these. The civilised society in India is strong enough to counter such sad incidents,” Mr Jaitley said. Describing General Musharraf’s speech as a case of “devil citing the scriptures,” Congress chief spokesman Jaipal Reddy said General Musharraf was making an awful mistake if he thinks that he could take international opinion for a ride. |
Eunuch Mayor moves HC Bhopal, September 13 In her revision petition, Kamla is mainly relying on a 1994 Government of India circular, later endorsed by the Election Commission, permitting a eunuch to contest an election from any seat whether reserved for male or female. The office of Mayor of Katni was reserved for women and Kamla, an independent candidate, was elected defeating Alka Jain of the BJP and Aradhana Jain of the Congress some two years ago. Kamla had declared herself female in the nomination papers, as had done other eunuchs who had contested the elections in the past couple of years, including Shabnam Mausi, the first eunuch to be elected a Member of an Assembly. Additional District Judge of Katni Virendra Singh ruled in his 40-page judgement delivered on August 29 that Kamla Jaan was not female and, therefore, ineligible for occupying the office of Katni Mayor. A large number of eunuchs, including those elected to various offices in the past couple of years, were present when Kamla filed her petition in the High Court on Monday. Before going to the court they performed their traditional rituals at Kacheri Dargah for the success of the revision petition. |

On Tagore pilgrimage VISITING
Tagore House in Kolkata and Shantiniketan, 220 km from the city, is
like going on a pilgrimage. The whole atmosphere and ambience at
Rabindra Bari infuses one with a sense of aestheticism which
enraptures and encapsulates one into the Tagorean world. Rabindra Bari
is in the heart of the city. One has to go through various lanes and
bylanes to make it there. However, once there, the big gates open to receive you with a kind of openness which is not only welcoming, but encompasses one’s very being and can grip you with the Tagore mania and hangover after hours and even days of the visit there. The main portion of Tagore House on the first floor displays various aspects to Tagore’s life. It also houses Rabindra University and classes are run on the campus of Rabindra Bari in various faculties like painting, music (both vocal and instrumental), dance and performing arts. One can hear the tinkling of ghungroos on the campus from one corner and the lilting Rabindra Sangeet from the other. In the main portion of the house where Tagore resided, sweet tunes of recorded Rabindra music and songs are played in the background. As one passes from one room to another, one is seized with a sense of belongingness. The items of use, utensils, painting brushes, leather purses, paintings, books, letters, terracotta works are all sprawled up in the various rooms used by
Tagore. The sitting place has the old big chairs, tables, glasses, ornamental carvings, all displayed artistically but covered to protect against the weathering because of the ravages of time. The sentries roam around with a word of caution not to touch things. The big ornate bed with long stands, which must have held mosquito nets used by
Tagore, is also displayed. Much of the furniture’s polish though has worn off in spite of the best possible maintenance by the Rabindra Trust. Shantiniketan has almost developed into a kind of township with houses and small shops indenting around at the fringes. However, the aesthetic aspect and serenity still prevails about it to quite an extent. One can view terracotta engravings in front of most of the houses and shops symbolic of the Tagorean cultural era. Vishva Bharta University is a deemed university and spread out in sprawling acres with faculties spread all over the huge campus. Each faculty, be it that of science or arts, has its own independent setup, with a canteen and student recreation centre which is used as a cultural forum. The museum Rabindra Sadan is inside the campus itself, but cut off from the various stream of faculties. Going around is like transporting oneself into another trip down the Tagorean era. The life and times of the Tagore household get delineated out more strongly here than at Tagore House. Most of the items of
utilisation used by Tagore, his wife Mrinalini, children, brothers, sister, nephews and nieces are also on display. Alongwith it are numerous paintings, leather engravings, terracotta works made by family members and gifted to Tagore from all over the world. The greatest pleasure which I got was on seening the Nobel Prize medal and citation which was awarded to Tagore for literature for his book of poems, ‘Gitanjali’. In the room, where Tagore breathed his last on August 7, 1941, are beautiful lines written by the Nobel laureate on a framed piece which go as follows: “When I leave from hence let this be my parting word That what I have seen is unsurpassable. I have tasted of the hidden honey of this lotus yonder that expands on the ocean, of light and this I am blessed. Let this be my parting word. In this playhouse of infinite forms I have had my play and here I have caught sight of him that eludes all forms. All my living body and limbs have thrilled with Him His touch who is beyond touch and if the end comes here let it come — let this be my parting word”.
