Amarnath pilgrimage to continue
Srinagar, August 6
In the first major strike on Amarnath pilgrims this year, a lone militant attacked their base camp gunning down nine devotees and injuring 30 others in their sleep near Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir early today. Three pilgrims died on the spot, the police said, while five others later died at the local hospital.

Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani said today that a militant outfit newly floated by Pakistan-backed Lashkar-e-Toiba was responsible for the attack on Amarnath pilgrims, near Pahalgam even as he asserted that the yatra would continue.

India today warned Pakistan not to mistake its restraint as a sign of weakness and asserted that it would act with firmness against those who threaten its sovereignty and security.

The pilgrims ran for their lives as the militant sprayed a volley of bullets and grenades on the sleeping devotees. Reshap Kumar, who is recovering at a hospital here, said the lone militant fired a volley of bullets and hurled grenades at the sleeping pilgrims.

The Additional District Judge, Panchkula, Mr H.S. Bhangoo, today issue notice to the State for August 10 on the anticipatory bail application filed by the Haryana I.G., Mr Ravi Kant Sharma, who is wanted by the Delhi Police in connection with the Shivani Bhatnagar murder.

HP claims 3,200-cr water ‘royalty’

The legal battle for “royalty” on river water used in power generation that Himachal Pradesh has demanded from Punjab has entered an advance stage in the Supreme Court. Himachal Pradesh has demanded Rs 2199.77 crore in a suit filed under Article 131 of the Constitution in 1996, with regard to its share in the Bhakra-Nangal and Beas projects, situated in the hill state.

Farm sector to pay for power
PSERC to hike tariff by month-end
Chandigarh, August 6
The proposed power tariff revision by the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) later this month will fall short of the expectations of the PSEB. The levying of power tariff on the agriculture sector is certain. Its rate, however, will depend on that how much the state government will be prepared to give to the board for subsidising power to the agriculture sector.

The Indian Cricketer of the Century Kapil Dev suffered a nasty blow in a freak accident at the Chandigarh Golf Range here this afternoon. The bleeding cricket icon had to be removed to Mukat Hospital where three stitches closed the gash on his forehead.
