United Linux conceptualised
Shveta Pathak

AIMING to provide a single, stable and uniform platform for application development, certification and deployment, four companies - Caldera, Conectiva, Suse and Turbolinux - have joined hands and conceptualised United Linux.

United Linux is a single platform, standard-based and high quality worldwide Linux solution targeted at the business user.

"Unlike the earlier practice where companies used to develop their own Linux distribution, system, the companies will now come out with a much better product centred around the needs of business. The end users can, in fact, expect products that are tailor-made to suit their requirements," Srikant Acharya, Country Director, India and South Asia, Caldera International, said.

He said United Linux would help customers develop a strong global network and attain a single product that can be certified at one time. "Moreover, they will get service support in all major world geographies," he said.

Talking about Caldera's distribution of United Linux, Acharya said the company would provide the product through reseller channel. The Linux distribution companies, with this, are slated to gain immensely due to the lower cost of development, and an increased opportunity to provide services.
