Couple among 5 killed in valley

Srinagar, June 26
Five persons including two militants, and a couple were killed and a jawan injured in separate incidents in the valley since last night, official sources said today.

Ali Mohammad and his wife, Misra, were killed by unidentified gunmen in their house at Reshipora in the Bandipora area of Baramula district in north Kashmir late last night, the sources said.

A Defence spokesman said an unidentified militant was killed and a jawan injured in an encounter at Zirpora near Bijbehara in Anantnag district of south Kashmir last night.

The encounter broke out when an Army ambush party signalled a van to stop for checking. The militants travelling in the vehicle opened fire triggering the gunfight, the spokesman said, adding that some more militants travelling in the vehicle, however, escaped.

Another unidentified militant was killed by the Army during search operations at Wadpora-Drugmulla in Kupwara early today. Some arms and ammunition were recovered from him.

The police found the body of a counter-insurgent, Ghulam Mohiuddin Chopan alias Mahi Chopan at Dachnipora village of Pahalgam in Anantnag last night, the sources said.

Chopan, a resident of Lirau-Pahalgam, had been kidnapped by the militants three days ago and later killed, the sources said.

Jammu: Exchange of low-intensity firing and mortar shelling between Indian and Pakistani troops continued in some areas of the Jammu, Rajouri, Kargil and Siachen sectors since Tuesday, while shelling and firing have considerably reduced in most of the border areas, official sources said on Wednesday.

The Pakistani troops resorted to mortar shelling at Sangral and Manjakote, Dhantani post and Rajdhani, besides central Siachen, Thang, Chorbat La and Dras areas of the Jammu, Rajouri, Siachen and Kargil sectors, the sources said adding that shelling continued intermittently until early Wednesday morning in the Sangral area of R.S. Pura, but stopped in other areas.

The Indian troops retaliated. There was no casualty or damage on the Indian side.

Cross-border firing and shelling had considerably reduced in most of the areas in the Kathua, Jammu, Rajouri, Poonch, Siachen and Kargil sectors during the past few days, the sources added. PTI

Border migrants take to streets

Jammu, June 26
About 5,000 migrants from border villages who fled their homes in the wake of Pakistani shelling today took to the streets, demanding a relief package akin to the one extended to displaced Kashmiri Pandits in the state.

Marching towards Jammu from Khour, they shouted slogans against the government, demanding an express announcement of the package for over 1.75 lakh border people, who were forced to abandon their homes due to Pakistani shelling in Kathua, Jammu, Poonch and Rajouri districts of the state.

They were stopped by police personnel.

The protesters alleged that migrants of some villages had not been paid any money or relief since last year. These villages include Chak Rama, Dallan, Nikkiyan, Derrian, Marchangi, Kote Mera and Khudda.

The Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, Mr Rohit Kansal, along with other senior officials reached the spot and assured the protesters that their grievances would be conveyed to the officials concerned.

The migrants blamed the state government for not fulfilling promises made to them by Central and state ministers during their visits to the camps.

They said the Supreme Court judgement, which directed the govenrment to provide relief, including monthly cash assistance and one room sets to displaced Kashmiris, should be implemented at the earliest. UNI

Fresh summons against Katiyar for July 22

Srinagar, June 26
The District and Sessions Court here has issued fresh summons to BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit President Vinay Katiyar to appear before the court on July 22 for his alleged comments against the holy relic of Prophet Mohammad at the Hazratbal shrine.

Fresh summons by Judge Bashir Ahmad Kirmani were sent by the registered post today and would be served to Mr Katiyar through the Lok Sabha speaker as the BJP leader was still a member of the Lower House of Parliament.

However, earlier summons to Mr Katiyar for June 22 could not be served to him as the same were received here by the court with the remark as “undelivered’’.

Two complaints were filed- one by the Kashmir Bar Association and the other jointly by Supreme Court lawyer Muzaffar Hussain Beig and journalist Imdad Saqi — against Mr Katiyar for his alleged comments against the holy relic of Prophet Mohammad in the daily, The Asian Age, on March 12.

The BJP MP has since denied to have made any comment against the holy relic as was reported in the article.

In their complaints before the court, Mr Beig and Mr Saqi said the comments of Mr Katiyar promotes disharmony and feelings of enmity between hindus and muslims.

The offending statement hurts the religious feelings of Muslims and intends to incite them into outrage and prima facie constitutes offences punishable under Section 153-A, 295-A and 505 of the Ranbir Penal Code, the complaint said. The complaints were filed after District Magistrate Abdul Hamid, here granted permission to the effect on March 15. UNI

Update electoral rolls: Panthers
Tribune News Service

Jammu, June 26
The Panthers Party, headed by Prof Bhim Singh, has resolved to fight against the “dynastic rule” of the Sheikh family in Jammu and Kashmir and for this “commandos” of peace would create awareness among people “to oppose the dictatorial policies of the National Conference (NC) regime and create mass resistance against terrorism”.

This was stated by Prof Bhim Singh at a news conference after the completion of the three-day national integration camp at Sudhmahadev, here today.

Prof Bhim Singh said if the Centre wanted to have a free and fair Assembly poll in Jammu and Kashmir, it should ensure that the electoral rolls were updated and President’s rule imposed on the state.

He said that since the electoral rolls were not yet updated, the Assembly poll should not be held in October.

Criticising the NC regime, the Panthers Party chief said the ruling party had betrayed the trust of people by indulging in corruption and nepotism. He said it was strange that despite being supported by the NDA government in “amassing wealth”, the NC leadership had started demanding a price for patriotism by criticising the Centre for not nominating Mr Farooq Abdulbh for the post of the Vice-President of the country.

He said that national awareness camps would be held in Kargil, Kupwara, Poonch and Rajouri so that more “peace” commandos could get trained for preparing people for ending terrorism through a message of love and peace. A bullet for a bullet policy had not yielded any results so far, he said.
