Panjab University needs to consider biotechnology as an inter-disciplinary course of the medical and non-medical streams instead of compartmentalising the course for non-medical students alone. Biotechnology is an engineering course but the thrust area for its application is living organism.

No decision yet on challaning vehicles

Even as the deadline to switch to the new colour scheme of registration numbers on vehicles ends on June 30, the Chandigarh Administration is yet to issue an order on when the challaning for violations will begin.

HC stays demolition at Nada village
Chandigarh, June 24
They settled in Panchkula’s Nada village way back in 1969 when the national highway way was being laid. Over the years, this working class from Tamil Nadu was reportedly issued ration cards, besides voters’ identity cards. However, the Haryana Urban Development Authority carried out a massive drive and demolished structures constructed by them.

Ruckus over infant’s death
Chandigarh, June 24
The Advanced Paediatric Centre at the PGI was the scene of a major emotional outbreak today evening following the death of an infant. The parents and relatives of the child started raising slogans against the doctors and nurses of the APC, alleging that the child had died due to the negligence of the PGI staff. The two-and-a-half-year old boy Nimish was admitted to the PGI emergency on Thursday.

‘Accounting standards to cut costs’
Chandigarh, June 24
The Centre has passed the new accounting standards to ensure uniformity in the cost accounting practices followed all over the country. Mr Arun Jaitley, Minister for Law, Justice and Company Affairs, has recently released the Cost Accounting Standard No. 1 regarding classification of costs, said Mr D.C. Arya, Secretary, Northern India Regional Council of the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India, here yesterday.

Panel to review rural credit distribution

The Estimates Committee will review the distribution of rural credit next week amidst reports of suicides by farmers in the region.
The committee is also likely to inquire into a recent scam in Punjab and the stoppage of supplies in Haryana by the Food Corporation of India.

Banks fail to achieve credit targets
Chandigarh, June 24
The State and Centre government inability to sanction adequate subsidy on time, and lack of bankers’ interest in the government-sponsored schemes have badly affected the disbursement of credit to the beneficiaries under these schemes. The banks have failed to meet the targets in most of the cases.

Woman commits suicide
Chandigarh, June 24
A 27-year-old married woman, Santo Devi, ended her life by hanging herself from the ceiling of her jhuggi here today. The police has not found any suicide note, said sources. A case has been registered.

2 stolen cars recovered
Chandigarh, June 24
The police claimed to have solved at least four cases of car theft from the city by arresting Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Dadu Majra Colony, here today. The Operation Cell of the police, which arrested him, also claimed to have recovered two cars and got information about as many stolen cars from him.

Non-teaching, teaching staff stir today
Chandigarh, June 24
Four unions representing managements, principals, teachers and non-teaching staff of non-government aided colleges of Punjab and Chandigarh will join hands to lodge a protest against the “anti-teacher policies of the Punjab Government” on June 25 at Matka Chowk, Sector 17.

Panjab University has declared the results of the following examinations held by the university in April-May 2002: BA general first year; BA/BSc. general second year compartment (except English), deficient, additional and improvement; MA music instrumental first year; BE (mechanical) VI semester; BE (agro) III semester; BE (aero) V semester; BE (aero) VII semester.

Bail granted to PU student leaders

Two student leaders of Panjab University, Santokhwinder Singh Nabha, former president of the Panjab University Campus Students Council and Harveer Singh arrested by the UT police in connection with an attempt to murder case registered against them were granted bail today by a local court.

HC order on land possession
Chandigarh, June 24
Acting on a petition filed by the city-based Sai Niketan Social Welfare Society challenging the allotment of primary school site in Sector 42, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued notice of motion for July 4 and ordered that the possession would not be delivered to the Kids Arcade International Society, Sector 9.

The culture of South met that of the East through the traditional dance form performance today at Kala Gram resulting in a show which kept the audience captivated through the entire evening. The main attraction of the show today was Prof Kalamandalam Leelamma, a famous mohiniyattam dancer from Kerala.

All eyes are now fixed on the outcome of the today’s first semi-final of the 2002 World Cup soccer meet between Germany and host Korea at Seoul. It might go in favour of Koreans with lakhs of its citizens wishing good luck to their heroes. If Korea moves into the final after beating Germany, it would be the dawn of a new era in football for the Asian countries.
