Govt for Gen Surjit as PPSC member
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 9
The Punjab Government has forwarded the name of Lt-Gen Surjit Singh (retd), a former GoC-in-C of the Western Command, for appointment as a member of the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) to the Governor, according to informed sources.

Earlier, there were reports that he was being appointed as Chairman of the PPSC in place of Ravinder Pal Singh Sidhu, who has been placed under suspension. However, now there appears to be a legal hitch in filling the slot of Chairman. Informed sources say Sidhu has just been suspended pending inquiry and not removed from the post. Technically, his post is still not vacant.

Ahmedabad, June 9
One person was killed and 22 were injured, six in police firing, as violence erupted after a brief lull with mobs hurling crude bombs and stones in the Juhapura and Guptanagar localities here today, police sources said.

Violence broke out in minority community dominated Juhapura when Special Reserve Police personnel went there to make some arrests in connection with communal clashes, they said. Mobs hurled four crude bombs on the security personnel and then indulged in stone-throwing forcing the police to open fire and burst tear-gas shells.

The deceased was a truck driver who, caught in the violence, was killed when he sped away with the vehicle which overturned. PTI
