IT raids on wine trader’s house, shops
Chandigarh, May 23
Wine shops, homes and office premises of one of the biggest wine traders, M/s Ladda Liquors, were raided by sleuths of the Income Tax Department. Also targeted were homes of various relatives and other associates.

No respite from heatwave in sight

Three seemed to be no respite in sight for the northern region from the heatwave as temperatures rose by several degrees today, with the city recording the season’s second highest maximum temperature so far at 43.6°C, five degrees above normal. Amritsar sizzled at 45.5°C, six degrees above normal.

Pickpocket caught red-handed
Chandigarh, May 23
A resident of Sector 38-West, Rajbir, was reportedly caught-red handed while he was trying to pick a pocket in the Sector-17 market. Sector-7 resident M. Nayan reported that he had Rs 180 and a driving licence in his pocket which the accused was trying to steal. He was handed over to the police who arrested him and registered a case against him.

4 arrested in flesh trade case
Dera Bassi, May 23
In an alleged case of flesh trade, the police detained four persons, a son of a former general secretary of the Block Congress Committee, a Haryana Home Guard employee and two women, here today. One of their accomplices escaped.

Jacob inaugurates emergency OT in GH-16

The Punjab Governor and UT Administrator, Lieut-Gen J.F.R. Jacob (retd), today asked the Department of Architecture to finalise the plan for an additional block of Sector 16 General Hospital within 15 days so that construction of the new block could be started at the earliest.

Basketball tourney from May 27 to 29
Chandigarh, May 23
The Chandigarh state sub-junior basketball championships in the below 13 age group for boys and girls will be held from May 27 to 29 at New Public School, Sector 18. This was stated by Col A.S. Judge, president of the Chandigarh Basketball Association. The UT teams in both sections will also be selected for taking part in the 29th national sub-junior national basketball championship to be held at Pondicherry from June 17 to 22.

Orders to cancel the bar licence of a Sector 35 hotel, Monarch, was reportedly issued this evening following alleged underpricing of liquor and sales being made at costs lower than even the landed cost of liquor.
