Two die in Srinagar blast
Militants attack Army camp

Srinagar, May 17
Two persons were killed and 14 others injured in a grenade explosion caused by militants near the police headquarters here today.

The police said an explosion took place near the fire services crossing, Batamaloo, here at about 3.45 p.m. injuring 14 persons. Damage was also caused to the nearby shops and passing vehicles.

A police spokesman confirmed the death of Abdul Salam Dar of Pulwama district, who succumbed to his injuries.

Elsewhere, three persons, including three security forces personnel, and a civilian were killed in separate incidents in the Kashmir valley since yesterday.

Two BSF personnel were killed when they were fired upon by unidentified militants at Mir Bazar, Sopore, in Baramula district, last evening.

Militants shot dead Mohammad Maqbool at Bonakote, Bandipore in Baramula district when they intruded into his house last night. His wife was also injured in the shootout, the police here said.

Close on the heels of Tuesday’s attack at the Kaluchak Army camp militants attacked a security force camp at Safapora with rockets and automatic weapons.

An official spokesman said the ultras fired a number of rockets and opened fire at the security force camp at Safapora Ganderbal late last night. The rockets exploded without causing any damage.

The security forces retaliated but the terrorists managed to escape, the spokesman said. A soldier, who was injured in another encounter at Waterpora Bandipora, died at the hospital late last night.

Meanwhile, the security forces shot dead five terrorists, including three owing allegiance to the Jaish-e-Mohammad and an area commander of the Hizbul Mujahideen, in two fierce encounters in Poonch and Doda districts today.

The three Jaish-e-Mohammad militants were killed in an operation launched by the police and the Army at Lhasaha village in Surankot area of Poonch district today.

According to the police, on receipt of information the security forces cordoned off the hideout and as they neared the spot, came under heavy fire. The forces retaliated, killing all three militants on the spot.
