Bomb in wireless set goes off, SPO dead

Srinagar, May 14
A Special Police Officer (SPO) was killed and another seriously injured in an explosion inside Lalpora police station in Kupwara district of North Kashmir today, official sources said.

The blast took place when the two SPO’s identified as Munir Ahmad and Bashir Ahmad were checking a wireless set brought to the police station by the latter’s mother, the sources said.

The wireless set was handed over to the woman by some persons, believed to be militants, with a request to hand it over to her son, the sources said.

Meanwhile, security forces averted a major tragedy when they detected and defused a powerful improvised explosive device planted by militants at Batgund in the frontier district of Kupwara.

Body of one Mishry was recovered from Keller in Pulwama district last night while one person Mohammad Yousuf was injured in an exchange of fire between militants and security forces at Zainapora last night.

At least five foreign ultras were shot dead by the BSF in an encounter at Kalal forest in the Kalakote area of Rajouri district this evening.

A BSF spokesperson said on phone that acting on a tip-off that some foreign ultras had entered the forest, BSF jawans launched a search operation to flush them out.

As the security forces zeroed in on the militants, the ultras opened heavy fire from their automatic weapons. In the ensuing encounter, which lasted for sox hours, five foreign ultras were shot dead, he added. UNI, PTI
