Most of the Congress workers here seem to be feeling let down over the attitude of the local administration, particularly the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Aggarwal, who kept them waiting for hours and made a quiet exit from the backdoor without meeting them.

“Most of the public and private institutions in India have become corrupt and inefficient and there is no way to improve them except to empower the public with right to information. It would force the institutions, including the print and electronic media, to become more transparent and accountable towards the public.

Contract system opposed
Ludhiana, March 20
The Safai Karamchari Union in the Municipal Corporation here has demanded the scrapping of the ban on new recruitment of safai workers. The ban is in force since 1986. The union has also demanded fresh recruitment of at least 5,000 safai workers, 2,000 sewer men and 1,000 beldars from the approved list to cope with the sanitation needs of the city.

Self-service canteen for defence personnel

A self-service CSD canteen of 152 (TA) Sikh Battalion was inaugurated here today by Col T.P.S. Gill, Commanding Officer. With the opening of the canteen near Jagraon Bridge, the dream of the retired Armed personnel of Ludhiana has come true.

Playwin launches  online lottery
Ludhiana, March 20
Amidst controversy to ban any online lottery of any other state in Punjab due to press reports by the Directorate of Lotteries, the Playwin Infravest Pvt. Ltd., a company promoted by Zee Network’s Essel Group, launched the first online lottery in the region here yesterday. The promoters claimed that the Punjab Government had no jurisdiction to ban the lottery of other states under the National Lottery Act.

The non-teaching staff of Arya College sat on dharna in protest against the negative attitude of the managing committee towards their demands. They sat in front of the principal’s office for three hours this morning.

PCCTU demands payment of salary grants
Ludhiana, March 20
Demanding early payment of salary grants from the Punjab government, the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union (PCCTU) has said that several government-aided colleges of the state have not been able to pay salary to the staff for the past three months.

Forum directs Improvement Trust to refund Rs 1.21 lakh
Ludhiana, March 20
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed the Improvement Trust, Ludhiana to pay Rs 30,300 and Rs 91,145 respectively to Mr Bhupinder Lal Aggarwal who is the legal heir and son of late Mr Kasturi Lal Aggarwal who had deposited the amounts as sale consideration of a plot allotted by the respondent.

Dr V.M. Kohli, Chief Cardiac Surgeon, Hero DMC Heart Institute, recently represented India at the international conference of the World Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Lucern in Switzerland.
