Muslim board to discuss temple ‘fully’ New Delhi, March 9 “The board has invited prominent Muslim leaders, including Jama Masjid Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari, to take stock of the situation and thrash out a response following the VHP’s written commitment to abide by the court verdict on the disputed land at Ayodhya,” AIMPLB member Kamal Farooqui said. Asked about the specific issues on the agenda of tomorrow’s meeting, Mr Farooqui said any matter related to the Babri masjid-mandir controversy would form part of the deliberations. “The agenda is wide and flexible and the Ayodhya issue will be discussed in its entire gamut.” Dr S Q R Ilyas, convener and spokesman of the Board, however, felt that the recent announcement by Union Minister of State for Home I D Swami on the lifting of restrictions on the movement of kar sevaks in Ayodhya was “against the court order.” Dr Ilyas said the Board had a sneaking doubt that the Centre was trying to “keep the issue alive” as these steps would militate against the spirit of talks held with the Shankaracharya. Describing the meeting as a bold initiative, Dr Farooqui said the Board would not hold any talks with the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) which had “always acted against the court and the Constitution.” The AIMPLB was all in favour of holding talks with Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati along with the government participation. “But as of now, the question of holding talks with the VHP does not arise at all,” he said. Meanwhile, Hindu and Muslim religious leaders today called for an immediate halt to “state terrorism” in Gujarat and said there should be no talks on the Ayodhya dispute outside the
Constitution and law of India as it would cast doubts on its sanctity. “The incidents in Gujarat have brought shame on the nation. The government should stop using religion as a tool of terrorism to gain political mileage,” Shankaracharya Swami Adhokshajanand told a joint summit of Hindu and Muslim religious leaders here. The meeting unanimously agreed that there should be no negotiations on the Ayodhya dispute outside the court and
Constitution. |
BMAC to oppose bhoomi pujan Ayodhya, March 9 BMAC all-India convener Jafaryab Jilani told UNI that according to the apex court’s 1994 judgment, the entire acquired land would be considered as disputed and without a final say on the title suit, no activity on it should be allowed. Mr Jilani argued that if one community was allowed to perform bhoomi pujan, others should also be permitted to conduct “such activities.” When reports came in of the bhoomi pujan programme, the Ramjanambhoomi trust was asked for land revenue records, he said. “But they have not submitted them till now,” he alleged.

Pranab next Vice-President? Kolkata, March
9 The
question has now been raised both in the political and administrative
circles in the state in the wake of the elections to five Rajya Sabha
seats from West Bengal on March 27, where Trinamool Congress chief, Ms
Mamata Banerjee wants to ensure the victory for her candidate, Dinesh
Trivedi, with the support of the Congress. Mr Trivedi is the
Trinamool’s all-India President. According to circles close to Ms
Banerjee, she herself had assured the WBPCC chief that she could
mobilise the NDA’s support for him for the Vice-President’s post,
provided Mr Mukherjee could ensure the Congress MLAs’ votes in
favour of Mr Trivedi in the Rajya Sabha election. Ms Banerjee fears
even her party’s ‘sure seat’ can go to the Left front candidate
if the sitting 30 Congress MLAs votes are either divided or go against
her candidate. Mr Mukherjee could not be contacted for his comment.
The Congress leader in the state Assembly, Mr Atish Sinha, said he had
no knowledge if any such offer was made to the WBPCC chief. Nor had he
any knowledge of if Mr Mukherjee would be contesting in the
Vice-President’s election. On the contrary, Mr Sinha had already
requested the AICC to allow them to field a candidate in the Rajya
Sabha election which could once again establish the party’s separate
identity in the Assembly. But WBPCC sources said Mr Mukherjee would
be ready to contest for the Vice-President’s post if Ms Sonia
Gandhi’s permission is obtained. Mr Mukherjee himself is not
unwilling to stand for the post. The state Congress leaders also
welcomed his decision. In fact, Mr Mukherjee had held some informal
talks with the BJP as well as Samajwadi Party leaders at the national
level in this connection. Recently, he also sought the help of Ms
Jayalalitha a and Mr Karunanidhi during his recent trip to Chennai,
party sources admitted. The elections for five Rajya Sabha seats
from West Bengal have been necessitated following the expiry of tenure
of Mrs Bharati Roy, Mr Bratin Sengupta, Ms Chandrakala Pandey,
Mohammad Salim and Mr Tamang Dawa Lama - all from the CPM. Ms Mamata
Banerjee feels if she could be assured of 30 Congress MLAs’ votes,
she would be able to ensure the victory of her candidate for the fifth
seat. In that case, however, the SUCI and the GNLF MLAs would have to
abstain from casting their votes. Meanwhile, Mr Kripasindhu Saha, a
senior FB MLA, was elected as Deputy Speaker of the state Assembly
today. The post fell vacant following the death of Mr Anil Mukherjee (FB),
last week, who died of cancer. |
Rs 4-crore Budget deficit in Bengal Kolkata, March 9 The Budget included provision of special taxes on foreign luxury goods , additional duties on motor vehicles and a pro rata additional 10 per cent surcharge on all commodities excepting petrol, diesel and various other essential items. There has been also a provision for new employment generation of 700,000 during the next financial year in the small and cottage industries, which will get special incentive from the government for revival and renovation. The restructuring of sales tax will lead to price hike of liquor, various cosmetic items, cement, textile goods and other consumers items. Presenting the budget, Dr Dasgupta claimed that under the present financial constraints he made an attempt to offer maximum benefit to the poor and ordinary people and termed his budget as “pro-people”.
