Hailing the victory of the Congress, industry and trade associations here have urged the new government to prepare a blueprint to boost industrialisation in the state. Since the growth in the agriculture sector has already plateaued, they say, only aggressive development in the industrial and service sector can address the problems of unemployment, state debt and stagnation in the economy.

Experts favour funds for diversification

Most experts favour allocation of funds for encouraging diversification under a different head in the budgetary allocation for the farm sector. Last date for filing IT returns March 31

In a move to increase the income tax assessee base, the Income Tax Department has once again extended the last date for filing returns to March 31. The date had earlier been extended in October to November 31.

Shobha yatra on March 11
Ludhiana, February 25
A shobha yatra in connection with the Shivaratri festival will be taken out from the Daresi grounds on March 11 at 11 am by the Shivaratri Mahotsav Committee, according to a press release.

25 kg poppy husk seized, two held
Ludhiana, February 25
The Sadar police on Saturday arrested Naginder Singh alias Bhola and Mangat Ram, both residents of Rangian village, and seized 25 kg of poppy husk from them. A case under Sections 15,61 and 85, NDPS Act, has been registered.

BSNL asked to compensate  for poor service
Ludhiana, February 25
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to pay Rs 5,000 as compensation on account of deficiency in services to Mr Geeraj Singh, a resident of Ranjit Nagar.

Warning of the brain
Ludhiana, February 25
“If a person has acute headache along with stiffness in the neck, he or she should visit a doctor, as this is the sign of bleeding in the brain. About 2 per cent of the population suffers from this disease called aneurysm (abnormally dilated blood vessel),” Dr M.K. Sobti, director of a neuro centre here, told reporters.

IMA for capable health minister
Ludhiana, February 25
Congratulating the Congress for coming back to power in Punjab, the district unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) today called upon the party leadership to decide upon a person who had the experience and capabilities to address problems related to the health and medical fraternity as health minister.
