Prime suspect in Pearl case held

Karachi, February 12
The Pakistani police has arrested the prime suspect in the case of kidnapping US reporter Daniel Pearl, British-born Islamic militant Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, Pakistan’s state news agency APP reported today.

It quoted the IGP in the province of Punjab, Malik Asif Hayat, as saying that Sheikh Omar, suspected of masterminding Pearl’s kidnapping, was picked up in Lahore on Tuesday morning. Pearl’s fate is still unknown.

Meanwhile, three suspects accused of involvement in the kidnapping of Pearl were remanded in custody by an anti-terrorist court in Karachi today. A report from Karachi, quoting police chief Tariq Jamil, said Sheikh had said Pearl was alive during initial interrogation after his arrest.

New Delhi, February 12
Mediapersons from Delhi and neighbouring states today held a demonstration outside the Pakistan High Commission here to protest against the kidnapping of Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl in Karachi last month.

Organised under the banner of National Union of Journalists (NUJ), the protesting journalists expressed serious concern about the fate of Pearl whose kidnappers had come out with a publicised threat to his life. UNI
