S.S. Sodhi, N.N. Vohra are
new Tribune trustees Chandigarh, February 8 Their association with the Trust has come about following the vacancies caused by the death of Mr B.K. Nehru and Mrs Serla Grewal.
Justice Sodhi set up the first office of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) after taking over as its Chairman in March 1997. He set up TRAI’s transparent and responsive systems keeping in view the overall aim of fostering a competitive regime in a liberalised telecom sector, the main objective of which was to bring in private investment and expand teledensity. After serving as Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court from 1982 to 1994 , he was elevated as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court from where he retired in April, 1995. Earlier, he was in the Punjab Superior Judicial Service and held various positions, including those of the District and Sessions Judge, Deputy Registrar (Research) at the Supreme Court of India, Legal Remembrancer to the Punjab Government and the Registrar of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He was the Lok Pal of Punjab from October, 1995, to December, 1996. Justice Sodhi is a Barrister at Law from London’s Lincoln’s Inn. He is 68. Belonging to the Punjab cadre of the IAS from which he retired in 1994 as Union Defence Secretary, Mr N.N. Vohra brings in rich experience gained during decades of public service in key policy-making government and non-government positions. His services were specially requisitioned to serve as Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister in 1997-98. He is at present the Co-Chairman of the India-EU Round Table. He was also a member of the National Security Advisory Board (1998-2001) and Chairman of the National Task Force on Internal Security (2000). Mr Vohra was a Consultant to the Director-General of WHO, and Regional Director, SE Asia Region, WHO, in the field of Public Health. He served his parent state for about two decades in various positions, including that of Home Secretary, in the difficult period after Operation Bluestar. In the Union Government, he served in the Special Services Bureau, Directorate-General of Security, and was deployed in the West Himalaya region from 1962 to 1964. He worked as Joint Secretary, Health, and later as Additional Defence Secretary, Secretary Defence Production, Defence Secretary and Home Secretary (1985-94). After retirement he has been the Director of the prestigious India International Centre, New Delhi. He is 66. |
