Jogi expands ministry
Four BJP ex-MLAs inducted

Raipur, January 29
A day after the Prime Minister asked 12 BJP legislators, who deserted the party to join the ruling Congress in Chhattisgarh, to vacate their seats, Chief Minister Ajit Jogi today inducted four of them into his ministry in the third Cabinet expansion of his 15-month-old government.

With this, the strength of the ministry has risen to 29, with 17 holding Cabinet rank.

At a ceremony in the Raj Bhavan here Governor Dinesh Nandan Sahaya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr Tarun Chatterjee, Mr Ganguram Baghel, Mr Sakrajit Nayak and Mr Vikram Bhagat.

While Mr Chatterjee, city Mayor and representing the Raipur rural constituency in the state Assembly has been made Cabinet Minister, Mr Baghel and Mr Nayak were made Ministers of State with independent charge. Mr Bhagat has been made Minister of State.

The 36-member BJP state legislature party had split with 12 of their MLAs quitting the party on December 20 and forming a new political outfit, the Chhattisgarh Vikas Party (CVP), which later merged with the Congress.

Terming Mr Vajpayee’s statement as “double standards”, Mr Jogi told reporters that “several persons joined the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh without resigning, whereas these MLAs have been asked to vacate their seats”.

“We will welcome more BJP MLAs. It had happened earlier and will happen in future”, the Chief Minister said, commenting on the reports that more BJP MLAs might join the Congress. Mr Jogi said there would be another expansion after the budget session of the state Assembly, commencing on February 18.

“This is not the final Cabinet expansion.... After the budget session there will be a thorough reshuffle to make use of best talents available within the Congress”, he said.

Denying that the inductions were a reward to legislators who left the BJP and joined the Congress, he clarified that his party wanted to utilise qualities of the legislators for development of the state.

In the 91-member House, the Congress has 63 MLAs, the BJP after losing 12 members on December 20, 2001, has 23, the BSP has two members, the Gondwana Ganatantra Party one and two independents.

Meanwhile, Mr Paresh Bagbahara, who had also left the BJP to join the Congress, has been appointed as Political Assistant to the Chief Minister. He will maintain coordination between people’s representatives and the government. PTI

173 Patiala palace recipes discovered
Tripti Nath
Tribune News Service

NEW DELHI: Recipes of the kitchen of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala now are being tried in a five-star deluxe hotel in South Delhi. Nearly 173 recipes seemingly lost by the Royal family are claimed to have been discovered by a culinary company with the cooperation of former Chief Minister of Punjab H.S. Brar and his Chandigarh-based relative.

Nearly 34 dishes apart from appetisers, rice, breads and sweet dishes based on these recipes can now be enjoyed at the 10-day Patiala Food Festival which began here on Friday at Singh Sahib, the Punjabi restaurant of Park Royale here. A tribute to Maharaja Bhupinder Singh known as a gourmet and for his cuisine, the festival is said to be the first in the New Year. The company has also succeeded in bringing two cooks from Patiala, one of whom (Satnam Singh) happens to be the grandson of Harnam Singh, a chef in Maharaja Bhupinder Singh’s kitchen. The third cook works in a restaurant on Lawrence Road, Amritsar.

Culinary expert and Jiggs Kalra’s partner, Marut Sikka told The Tribune here that the recipes were mentioned to him by the Brars’. Determined to make the chance discovery “fruitful”, Sikka followed it up with perseverance and succeeded in putting together a menu for the festival.

The company which is also a culinary consultant to the hotel managed to get 173 typed and documented recipes, 33 recipes scribbled in Gurmukhi and five to seven recipes by word of mouth from the cooks. “While some recipes written by Jemadar Harnam Singh, one of the Maharaja’s soldiers, were very detailed, others were sketchy and we had to work extensively on them. We also got some reference points from families known to the descendants of Raja Bhalindar Singh, the Maharaja’s brother credited with making seafood popular in the State.

Asked why they decided to begin the calendar year with a Patiala Food Festival, Mr Sikka said, “There is so much food which India has lost. Since we have a Punjabi restaurant, we decided to have food of the region. Patiala food is more basic and provincial. As far as I know, 95 per cent of these recipes are coming into public domain for the first time. We have also created two-three recipes. For instance, the royal recipe had the Khaatai Kebab made from Lamb meat. We have introduced the Sabz Khatai Kebab from Zucchini (Taroi) and Yam (Zimmikand).”

Mr Sikka said that the menu gives a brief historical background of the food. “Vegetarian dishes constitute 70 per cent of the menu. We are a little partial to the vegetarians as we feel that they do not get enough variety. The menu also has pickles besides egg dishes like eggs Talwa (Ande Ke Kebab), fish kebab, fish curry and a prawn dish.”

He feels that effort should be made to revive the dying art of cooking. “Had the manuscripts with these recipes not been found, these would have been lost.”Top
