Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 29
Mrs Serla Grewal, President, The Tribune Trust, a former Governor of Madhya Pradesh and a distinguished civil servant, died at the PGI here today after a protracted illness. She was 74.

Mrs Grewal, who brought to The Tribune group of publications mature practical experience gained during decades of public service in various top administrative jobs and high policy-making governmental positions, succeeded Mr B.K. Nehru as President of The Tribune Trust in April, 2000, after the latter stepped down for health reasons. Mrs Grewal became a Trustee of The Tribune in March, 1991.

She leaves behind her husband, Mr S.S. Grewal, a former Cabinet Secretary, and two sons . She will be cremated on January 31 at the Sector 25 cremation ground. The funeral procession will start from house number 59, Sector 2, at 11.30 a.m.

She became the second lady in the country to join the Indian Administrative Service in 1952. She held several important executive positions, both in Punjab and the Union Government. Her tenure as the Deputy Commissioner of Simla is remembered with as much appreciation as the diverse hierarchy of responsibilities shouldered by her in the fields of education, family welfare, food and supplies, and industry in Punjab.

Her commitment to health and social growth took her to important forums like the World Health Organisation and UNICEF, besides the headquarters of the UN Population Commission in the late ’70s and early ’80s. She was also associated with the Indian Council of Medical Research.

She, as Deputy Secretary of Health in Punjab, played an important role in the setting up of the PGI. Later she became Secretary, Health, Government of India, and served on the Governing and Institute bodies of both the PGI and the AIIMS.

She had the reputation of being a strict disciplinarian and an officer who would not have any target missed. Her approach was that of a hard task master who insisted on propriety being maintained at all times.

Subsequently, she became Secretary to the Prime Minister of India, and Governor of Madhya Pradesh.

In a condolence message, Mr R.P. Bambah, Trustee of The Tribune Trust, said: “It was a privilege to work with her. She was a person of great integrity and total commitment. She guided the affairs of The Tribune with clarity and dedication. The Tribune Trust will miss her and the nation will be poorer because of her passing away”.

Mr S.D. Bhambri, former General Manager, said: “I had known her for decades and have been a great admirer of her administrative skills and clarity of vision. She was, all in all, a great achiever”.Back
