Mumbai, January 4
Banking services across the country were today affected during the one-day strike of bank employees even as the Reserve Bank of India’s clearing house processed 1.25 lakh instruments, amounting to approximately Rs 20 crore.

“Out of 117 banks, 89 participated in at par clearing, which processed over 1.25 lakh instruments, amounting approximately to Rs 20 crore”, an RBI spokesperson said here.

The strike was called by the All-India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) to protest against the alleged forcible transfers of staff by the Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) management.

The clearing house functioned smoothly and all participant banks also collected their instruments cleared by the RBI last night, the spokesperson said, adding that the receipt of instruments for today will happen in the evening.

AIBEA claimed that the call for the strike received an overwhelming response. The Delhi convener of the United Forum of Bank Union (UFBU), Mr V.K. Gupta, said the strike led to the holding up of clearance to the tune of over Rs 400 crore.

“Nine bank unions will be meeting within the next 10 days to decide the future course of action, including boycott of SCB instruments by other banks”, the spokesman said. Shiv Sena-affiliated Bank Karmachari Sena Mahasangh, however, did not participate in the strike. PTI
