12 Pak intruders killed in valley Srinagar, July 15 Elsewhere in the valley, four militants and a policeman were among six persons killed in separate incidents, while militants ambushed an Army convoy, injuring a jawan since last night. A defence spokesman said Army personnel shot dead five heavily-armed militants at Anjalikot in the Telail area in Baramula district when they intruded into the area from across the border. Four more Pakistani intruders were killed by the Army in a fierce gunbattle during an ambush laid on likely routes of infiltration in the Keran sector of frontier district of Kupwara last evening, he said, that adding three infiltrators were killed near the LoC at Paro in the Uri sector and in Kupwara yesterday. A huge cache of arms and ammunition, including eight AK assault rifles, a pistol, an under-barrel grenade launcher, 17 RPG rockets, 30 grenades and a wireless set were recovered from the intruders, the spokesman said. A police spokesman said three unidentified militants were killed in ongoing operations launched by the Army and the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the police at Garoora-Bandipora and Hamam-Dengiwacha in Baramula district today. The troops also gunned down an unidentified militant in Duenewar near Baramula last evening, he said, that adding the body of a policeman, who was abducted by militants recently, was recovered from rawanpora in Baramula district today. Militants also shot dead a woman in the Zainapora area of Shopian in Pulwama district last night. Meanwhile, an Army jawan was seriously injured when a group of militants ambushed a security convoy in Baramula district today, official sources said. Militants lobbed a grenade and followed it by firing on the Army convoy which was on way to Kupwara from Baramula. The security forces immediately laid a cordon around the whole area to nab the militants involved in the attack, the spokesman said. JAMMU: A militant of Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Toiba outfit was killed and a minor girl injured in separate militancy-related incidents in Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir since Saturday, official sources said on Sunday. The militant, identified as Abu Bakar, was killed in an encounter with the security forces at Yurankote in the district in Jammu division, the sources said, adding that arms and ammunition were recovered from him. In another incident, militants triggered an improvised explosive device in a nullah across a bus stand at Mendhar in which a young girl suffered minor injuries. Tea gives fillip to Hurriyat Jammu, July 15 What seems to have helped the APHC from losing its face totally after being marginalised by the Centre has been its meeting with Gen Musharraf for those who support anti-India campaign in Kashmir the meeting has proved to be a life-saving potion. For them what proposals the APHC leaders suggested to Gen Musharraf are not as important as the meeting between the two sides. However, the ruling National Conference leaders, including Mr Ali Mohammad Sagar, Works Minister, are of the opinion that the APHC leaders lack mass support. Mr Sagar said “These Hurriyat leaders are confined to Srinagar and they do not represent people of the state.” He said “if Gen Musharraf has tried to infuse life-saving drug into their veins it will hardly matter because Pakistan wants puppets to operate in Kashmir.” He said if the APHC leaders want to establish their claim that they “are the real representatives of the people of state, they should contest the Assembly poll.” No doubt the meeting with Gen Musharraf has slowed down the process of the extinction of the Hurriyat Conference but it has hastened the process of its split. The JKLF, led by Mohammad Yasin Malik, may find it difficult to remain under the Hurriyat umbrella after he and his followers turned down the invitation from the Pakistani High Commissioner in Delhi. Informed sources said the Hurriyat leaders suggested to Gen Musharraf to persuade Mr Vajpayee that the Kashmir issue should be resolved through tripartite talks in which the Hurriyat leaders and others should also be involved. Both the National Conference and the BJP leaders in Jammu are keen to remind the separatists in Kashmir and the agencies across the border to understand the depth of Indian democratic values. The BJP leader, Mr D.K. Kotwal, said: “The meeting between Gen Musharraf and the Hurriyat leaders was possible only under the Indian democratic set-up” “The Government of India was opposed to such a meeting and when the Hurriyat leaders were invited to the tea party the government did not stop them. They should thank the government,” he added. National Conference leaders are of the opinion that the meeting with Gen Musharraf has further exposed the Hurriyat leaders and nobody could doubt their programme of following the pro-Pakistan agenda in Kashmir. They said the meeting would not help the Hurriyat leaders in gaining peoples’ support. The Panun Kashmir leaders, Dr Ajay Chrungoo, has held the Centre responsible for granting recognition, unwittingly, to the Hurriyat leaders by allowing them to meet Gen Musharraf. He said the Hurriyat leaders “do not represent even the people of Kashmir and their lack of any base in Jammu and Ladakh” should have encouraged the Government of India to hold parleys with representatives of other ethnic groups including Sikhs, Hindus and Buddhists. |
