Only few to have a date with Pervez New Delhi, July 7 General Musharraf is scheduled to visit the haveli on July 14. All occupants of the haveli would not be allowed to meet General Musharraf due to security reasons. Those who would be allowed would be issued special passes, reliable sources in the Delhi Police said. The residents of the locality have been categorically asked by the police not to come out of their houses when the guest of the nation comes calling on his visit to his ancestral house in the narrow bylanes of Old Delhi. Security personnel in plain clothes have already started keeping vigil and are making a record of those visiting the area, with less than a week left for the Pakistan’s military ruler’s visit to the area. A security team of the Delhi Police visited the haveli yesterday and conducted a detailed survey of the area to make a plan for security arrangement. The team comprising Special Commissioner of Police (Security and Operations) R.S. Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Udai Sahay and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Security) Satyendra Garg visited the haveli. The police team surveyed the area in the presence of local MLA Shoaib Iqbal, the sources said. The team members met all families living in the haveli and noted names of their members and servants. According to the sources, two days before the visit of the General, original owner of the haveli, a police control room will be set up there and a PCR van will be deployed outside the haveli for 24 hours to keep vigil. All shops in the area and Golcha cinema, which was courtyard of the haveli, will remain closed on the day when Pakistan’s President will make a visit to the haveli. The approach road to the haveli will also remain close on July 14. Besides, when General Musharraf visits the Haveli, his motorcade will be allowed to take a U-turn on Netaji Subhash Marg in Daryaganj. The traffic police will also remove the central verge in front of the Golcha cinema. This step has been taken to prevent traffic chaos in the area during the General’s visit. The police has directed the scores of shops and eating joints dotting the road leading upto the haveli to keep their shutters down to enable fool-proof security. More than a dozen small and big restaurants, dhabas and eateries line the side lane next to Golcha cinema from Netaji Subhash Marg to the haveli. The police and civic agencies have, over the past few days, removed unauthorised joints from the lane to ensure complete security. The security drill continues alongside the restoration work that is being carried out from the main road to the gate of the haveli. The pavements are being covered with tiles. All roads that General Musharraf could possibly travel through are being re-done so that he does not face any bumpy ride during his stay in the Capital. |

MP leads in water conservation New Delhi July 7 The abhiyan was launched by the Madhya Pradesh Government in the wake of widespread drought in the state this year. Under the campaign, the government mobilised community action to supplement the state’s drought-relief effort. Chief Minister Digvijay Singh said here yesterday that the state government had been implementing the Rajiv Gandhi Watershed Management Mission since 1994 in over 7,300 villages of the state. These villages, where the mission was working over the years, had developed resilience to withstand drought. The government decided to convert the crisis of drought into an opportunity for building an alliance of the government and the people for water harvesting. The Pani Roko Abhiyan began with trained government officials moving to all 51,806 villages of the state to disseminate information on simple do-it-yourself methods for on-farm water conservation. This was made the theme of the state’s annual week-long Gram Sampark Abhiyan held between February 3 and Februray 8. The response of the people to the message of water conservation was truly phenomenal as evident from the results of the campaign, Mr Digvijay Singh said. In the past five months, 11,690 new tanks have been constructed. This amounts to 77 tanks getting constructed each day of these five months. Over 16,000 old tanks were renovated, 14,385 new dug wells constructed and 79,671 existing dug wells renovated. Water-recharging methods were adopted for 1,14,035 dug wells and 50,699 tubewells and 75,418 hand pumps. Over 32,000 farm ponds were constructed and 25,017 dug-out pits were made on farm lands, 1,70,777 soak pits were made. There was also an effort to promote roof-top rain-water harvesting and 9,744 such structures were made. Taken with 1,05,983 miscellaneous structures, the total harvesting structures came to 7,06,304. In addition, 6,940 km of field bunds were made to conserve water on the farms and 7,132 km of contour trenches made to improve water conservation in forests and waste lands. The Pani Roko Abhiyan was supported by the state government through funds available under various schemes. Of the Rs 415 crore investment in the abhiyan, nearly Rs 100 crore came as community contribution. Enthused by this mass mobilisation, the state government now proposes to extend the work of the Rajiv Gandhi Watershed Management Mission to all villages through pani roko samitis in each village. |
