100-cr compensation to farmers
Damage due to rain

The state government has earmarked an amount of Rs 12.31 crore for disbursement among farmers of the district who had to sell paddy below the minimum support price during the last procurement season.

SAD ‘adopting’ double standards

The President of the Sarb Hind Shiromani Akali Dal, Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra, has taken the SAD-BJP led government to task for adopting double standards for adopting a soft approach towards the former militants while ignoring Sikh detainees languishing in various jails.

Students prevented from meeting CM
Amritsar, June 17
More than 30 students of the Physiotherapy Department of Guru Nanak Dev University who wanted to present a memorandum to the Mr Parkash Singh Badal, Punjab Chief Minister, here today were prevented from doing so by the security personnel on VVIP duty.

Security for yatra ‘inadequate’
Bathinda, June 17
Mr Jagmohan Kaura, organising secretary of the Punjab unit of the Shiv Sena (Bal Thackeray) said today the security arrangements for the Amarnath pilgrimage were not up to the mark in view of the threats from militants in the Kashmir valley.

Sangat darshan programmes being held by the Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, are unlikely to yield results if the implementation of schemes announced by the Chief Minister at sangat darshan in April at Dhar for the uplift of the Dhar subdivision is any indication.

Mr Jagjit Singh Joga, District Secretary, CPI, alleged in a written statement issued here yesterday that the ruling Akali government and most of its ministers and relatives of the ministers had been indicted for one or the other charges.

Kanshi Ram rules out alliance

Mr Kanshi Ram, BSP supremo, has ruled out any alliance with any political party. He said the BSP had emerged as the third largest national, he said this addressing a meeting of the SC, ST, Government Employees Federation, workers meeting held a hotel here yesterday. Later, he addressed a rally at Bhoa village.

Tension persists over eviction
Bathinda, June 17
Even as tension, which has built up in the town over the demolition of a building and an armed attack on its tenants occupants yesterday, by goons persists, the district administration has tried its best to defuse the situation by agreeing to accept two of the three demands of the Shahar Bachao Action Committee formed after the incident.

Three flood-control centres for Bathinda

The drainage system in the district is poor, leading to a flood-like situation even after a short spell of rain in various parts of the city, particularly the Mall road, Sirki bazaar, Ganesha basti, power house road, Amrik Singh road, Veer Colony and Guru Nanak Pura.

‘Dastak’ towards better policing
Jalandhar, June 17
To eliminate communication gap between senior and junior police officials and to ensure better relations with public, the Jalandhar police has decided to launch “Dastak”, a novel single-window clearance mechanism from tomorrow.

Tubectomy death blamed on doctor
Bathinda, June 17
The district unit of the Association for Democratic Rights has submitted its inquiry report on the death of Ms Laxmi Kaur, a resident of the city. It is alleged that Laxmi Kaur died due to negligence on the part of the doctor who performed the tubectomy.

Advocate contests minister’s statement
Bathinda, June 17
Mr N.K. Garg an advocate who filed a civil suit against Mr Chiranji Lal Garg, Punjab Minister for Science and Technology and Law and Justice, said today the statement given by the minister that the land which he purchased in 1970 was not acquired by the government was not true.

The Union Government has launched an accelerated power development programme to check the transmission losses in the country. The Union Power Minister, Mr Suresh P. Prabhu, said this while talking to newspersons at Nangal yesterday.

Decision on mini zoo soon
Amritsar, June 17
The fate of the mini zoo in Ram Bagh will be decided at a meeting of the municipal corporation on June 20 to be presided over by the Commissioner, Mr B.R. Banga. The meeting will comprise corporation’s landscape officer, horticulture officer, health officers of the corporation, assistant commissioner D.P. Gupta and the Deputy Commissioner.

DC orders survey for hepatitis-B

Mr R. Venkatratnam, Deputy Commissioner, has given instructions to officials of the Health Department to conduct a survey in Chauke village for suspected cases of hepatitis-B.

Case against cop for helping smugglers
Fatehgarh Sahib, June 17
The police has registered a case against Prem Singh, a former SHO and presently with the Ludhiana Police under Sections 7 and 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Sections 218 and 409, IPC, on the directions of the DIG, Patiala Range. The Tribune had highlighted the police-smuggler nexus recently.

Cases against travel agents
Hoshiarpur, June 17
A case of cheating was registered against a travel agent of Dhilwan district of Kapurthala at Tanda police station yesterday. According to the FIR, the travel agent convinced Jaswant Singh of Kharl Khurd village to send his brother and son to the USA and charged him Rs 5,50,000.

Five booked for demanding dowry
Tarn Taran, June 17
Five members of a family at Naurangabad village under the local Sadar police station have been booked for demanding more dowry under Section 498-A, IPC. The accused have been identified as Swaran Singh, father-in-law, Lakhwinder Kaur, mother-in-law, Daljit Singh, husband, Harjit Singh, brother-in-law, and Pinder Kaur, sister-in-law of Paramjit Kaur. 

8 killed in road accident
Muktsar, June 17
As many as eight occupants of a jeep died when a truck coming from the opposite direction hit it near Chidewala village, 7 km from here, on the Muktsar-Kotkapura road today. The victims were going from Muktsar to Baghapurana in connection with the betrothal ceremony. 

3 die as car, bus collide
Phillaur, June 17
Three persons, including a woman and her daughter, were killed on-the-spot, when a Toyota Qualis No. (PB-08 AA-7066) in which they were travelling from Ludhiana to Jalandhar, collided with a Pepsu Road Transport Corporation bus (PB 11E-9646) near Pachhowal village between Phillaur and Goraya on the GT Road on Sunday evening.

Employee robbed of Rs 2.3 lakh
Sangrur, June 17
Two unidentified persons yesterday robbed an employee of a petrol station of Rs 2.38 lakh near a bank at Ahmedgarh near Malerkotla. The police said the unidentified persons robbed the employee when he was going to deposit the money in the bank. 

Three die in road mishap
Ropar, June 17
Three persons, including a woman, were killed while one was injured seriously when the car in which they were travelling collided with a truck, near here, today.
