Pak may release 29 Punjabi youths
Ferozepore, June 10
Mr Parkash Singh Badal said today that 29 Punjabi youths, who were languishing in Baluchistan jails in Pakistan after being duped by travel agents, may soon be released. “I had a meeting with Mr L. K. Advani recently, who assured me in this regard,” Mr Badal told UNI here. These youths had landed in Pakistan jails after trying to return to India from the west-Asia via Pakistan. However, they were caught by the immigration authorities and have been in the jails for over five months now.

Call for Panthic unity unlikely to yield results

Even as Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, Jathedar, Akal Takht has given a call for complete ‘Panthic unity’ to various Akali factions, it is unlikely to yield any result, at least in the near future. Though Akal Takht has played historic role in forging unity among Akali factions whenever there was a split in the party, in the present context leaders of various Akali factions are not giving significance to the institution for a variety of reasons.

Villagers rejoice Khabra’s win in UK poll

Piara Singh Khabra’s third successive election to British Parliament has thrilled his relatives, friends and residents in his native village in Punjab. Khabra (72) belongs to Kaharpur village in Hoshiarpur district. He defeated his Conservative Party rival in Southall with a record margin of 13,883 votes. He is among the seven British Asians who were elected.

Cops take away fasting mill worker
Bathinda, June 10
The police today allegedly picked up Mr Beant Singh Kainth, president of the Sugar Mill Chalao Action Committee, who has been on fast since June 1 in front of the sugar mill at Budhlada along with 10 of his supporters. Mr Binder Singh took over the place of Mr Kainth and carried on the fast, the reports said.

Crucial BJP meeting tomorrow

The District Legal Services Authority has launched an awareness campaign to create awareness among weaker sections of the society regarding their right for free and competent legal services by putting several display boards at most of the public places. It has decided to organise legal aid camps in Jalandhar and Nawanshahr district.

The Punjab Regiment at a solemn function honoured war widows, kin of martyrs and the disabled jawans and gave financial help worth Rs 1.70 crore. The function was attended by Mr Prakash Singh Badal, Irrigation Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon, Lt-Gen, R.S. Dayal, Lt-Gen P.P.S. Bindra, Maj-Gen S.K. Awasthy, besides hosts of senior serving and retired Army officers.

Tributes paid to Giani Kartar Singh
Hoshiarpur, June 10
Paying tributes to Giani Kartar Singh, a renowned leader of the Akali Dal, on his 27th anniversary at Government College, Tanda, 32 km from here, this afternoon, Mr Parkash Singh Badal Chief Minister, said the Giani had dedicated his life to the welfare of the Sikh Panth. He did not care for office and his main aim was to serve the Panth only. He said Giani Kartar Singh was an able and honest thinker-politician. He worked hard to rehabilitate those who come to India after Partition. Mr Badal said a memorial would be constructed in the memory of the leader at Tanda.

Bitta criticises govt for inviting Musharraf

President of the All-India Anti Terrorist Front Maninderjit Singh Bitta criticised the BJP-led Central Government for inviting Chief Executive of Pakistan, Gen Parvez Musharraf, for talks to resolve all bilateral matters, including Jammu and Kashmir, and has termed that the move would have adverse impact on the morale of the security forces, fighting proxy war in the valley.

Rally against privatisation

A large number of farmers, employees, workers and student organisations, including the Punjab Kisan Sabha, the Punjab Students Federation and the Punjab unit of AITUC have drawn up a programme for a phased and sustained struggle, starting with a rally on June 21 at Ludhiana to “save the people from the ill-effects of liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation”.

‘Compensate parents of electrocuted boy’

In a letter to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Mr Satya Pal Dang, veteran CPI leader, has sought compensation for the death by electrocution of a 7-year-old son of Jagdish Prasad and Radhika Devi, residents of Bhalla Colony, Chheharta.

Municipal councillor Charanjit Mittal, who died of cardiac arrest this morning was cremated here this evening. He was 46. He had returned from America a few days ago.

Mr Harnek Singh and Mr Shingara Singh, state vice-president and district general secretary, respectively, of the BKU (Ekta) alleged today that Mr Neta Singh of Bhuchu Khurd village had committed suicide because he was not able to return the debt that he had taken for farming purposes.

Foodgrain thefts on the rise
Moga, June 10
Theft of foodgrain bags valued at several lakhs of rupees at the hands of certain unscrupulous persons allegedly in collusion with employees of government procurement agencies and the police are on the increase. According to a recent complaint lodged with Baghapurana police station in Moga district on Saturday by Jagtar Singh, son of an MLA, nearly 100 bags of wheat had been stolen from the grain market of Smalsar village by certain persons in collusion with the police.

Boy kidnapped from classroom
Phagwara, June 10
A seven-year-old student of the local Jyoti Model School was allegedly kidnapped by an unidentified youth from the school classroom yesterday, the police said. Mr Raj Kumar, father of the child, in his complaint lodged with the Satnampur police station, had alleged that a clean-shaven youth in his early twenties went to his son’s classroom and asked for him by name.

Two quacks arrested
Bathinda, June 10
The district police has arrested two quacks, who have been giving villagers intoxicating drugs.In a press note issued here today, Dr Jatinder Kumar Jain, SSP, said a quack Jalore Singh, was running a medical hall at Kotshamir village of the district. He had been supplying intoxicating medicines at very high rates to the unsuspecting villagers under the garb of treating them. Another quack Baljit Singh, alias Balli, was running a medical store near bus stand in the city. He had also been selling intoxicants to people at high rates.

At least 37,000 copies of the social studies textbook approved and published for students of Class III by the Punjab State Education Board contain glaring mistakes besides vital omissions.
