‘Monkey mukti’ yajna
held New Delhi, May 19 The idea of having people maintain vigil was to increase more eyes on the road for the mystery creature. But it did not mean that they would take law and order in their own hands, a senior official of the Delhi police said. People had started patrolling in their areas after attacks by a mysterious monkey-man which had injured about 100 persons so far in the Capital. Panic has been created by “mischief mongers” not by the monkey, he said. Meanwhile, president of the National Human Rights Council Subhash Gupta today organised a “monkey mukti yajna” on
Parliament Street to get rid of attack by mysterious monkey-man started from Ghaziabad to various localities of the Capital. Eleven vedic pandits and scholars started the “yajna” by
chanting mantras. The official said, following the order of Commissioner of Police, Mr Ajai Raj Sharma, to take stern action against the rumour mongers, the Delhi police arrested three persons on this charge since last night. Seven persons were arrested from East Delhi and the rest from the north-east district of the Capital. Kishan Kumar (32), a Home Guard and resident of Kasturba Nagar, was arrested for making a fake call of monkey-man’s attack. He reportedly telephoned the local police that a monkey had come to his place. When the police team reached there he was found in an inebriated state. Vinod Mehra of Krishna Nagar in East Delhi also made a similar call and was arrested on the charge of rumour mongering. Mukesh (45) was taken into police custody in Vishwas Nagar after in an inebriated state he was found shouting “bandar aayaa, bandar aayaa” (monkey is coming). A total of 48 calls of monkey-man’s attack were received by the police from different areas of the Capital last night. Of them only eight were confirmed where people were found injured. Ashu (19) of Shakarpur in East Delhi said while she was asleep on roof top of her house a black monkey scratched her. However, refusing her claim doctors said the injury could be self-inflicted. Shakir, who lives in Khureji area of the same district said he was asleep outside his house at 2.30 a.m. when he was attacked by the mysterious monkey-man. He was also injured. |
