Twenty-two-year old Sameer, who resides on the Panjab University campus, is a man without hope. When, as a bubbly teenager he sought solace in the world of drugs, he cared little about his future. Today, drugs have acquired a vice-like grip on his life.

Despite orders of the Panjab University to discourage deployment of science teachers as invigilators for the Combined Entrance Test (CET)-2000, many of the 34 centres of the city had science teachers of colleges on duty.

The UT administration has cancelled its offer to Zee Interactive Learning Systems (ZILS) for running computer courses in schools here. The courses were to be introduced for students of class VI to XII in 67 government schools.

13-yr-old abducted, raped

A 13-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and raped by a youth of Bir Ghaggar village near here on Friday morning.

The Principal of Sarva Bharati Model Middle School, Mani Majra, who beat up one of her students severely, was booked by the police for illegal confinement and causing minor injuries late in the evening yesterday.

Round-the-clock blood availability stressed
Chandigarh, May 19
Pradeep Virk did not die of shortage of blood but critical head injuries sustained following a road accident. But Mr Daljit Singh Gujral, the INSCOL managing director, where Pradeep was treated after she was referred there from GMCH, Sector 32, to the PGI said relatives of the patients in private hospitals often had to run from pillar to post to get a couple of units of blood, especially at odd hours.

It is a no-win situation for the consumers. They will still have to pay for replacing the water meters, now to be installed by the civic body. If the recommendations of the Finance and Contract Committee are accepted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the consumers will continue to be burdened.

35 of 39 ponds dried up

While water problem seems to be omnipresent in the entire district, the paucity of water is taking a toll on the cattle as well. As many as 35 of the 39 water sources meant for cattle in Pinjore have been declared dry.

Fake bus tickets found
Chandigarh, May 19
The General Manager of the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) lodged a complaint with the local police that he had noticed a pack of fake CTU bus tickets. According to the police sources, a person named Mr Vinod Kumar found this pack near a petrol station in Sector 22 here on Tuesday and brought it to the CTU office. The CTU officials found the ticket to be fake.

Boy succumbs to injuries
Chandigarh, May 19
An eight-year-old boy who was hit by a scooter on Thursday afternoon died in the PGI late in the evening yesterday. The boy had reportedly received severe head injuries.

Murder accused surrenders
Panchkula, May 19
Sant Lal, the alleged paramour of Preeti, a 25-year-old woman who was reportedly strangulated to death by her husband, Santosh Yadav, in Rajiv Colony on May 13, surrendered before the police, here today.

Five hurt in clash

2 more PU courses through correspondence

There is good news for those who want to do a masters in sociology or commerce through correspondence. The Department of Correspondence Studies (DCS), Panjab University, will be introducing masters in sociology and masters in commerce course from the next academic session, due to begin in July this year.

With the prosecution closing its case after examining witnesses sought by it, the General Court Martial trying Maj V K Madhan for alleged dereliction of duty during the Kargil conflict today put questions to the accused.

Prosthetic centre’s plea dismissed
Chandigarh, May 19
A revision petition filed by Nevedac Prosthetic Centre and three others challenging the orders passed by a Civil Judge rejecting their application was dismissed by Ms Justice Bakhshish Kaur of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. In their application the centres had sought the dismissal of a suit filed by Lt Col K.J. Vohra “for want of jurisdiction”.

Awards don’t cover film costs: producer

After three years, producer Devinder Walia of “Mein Ma Punjab Di”fame is back with “Ishq Nachavye Gali Gali,” a Punjabi feature film, the premiere show of which will be held at a local theatre tomorrow.

Camps of utter confusion
Chandigarh, May 19
Confusion prevailed among patients in the Sector 22 Government Polyclinic today as two camps — one by the health authorities and the other by a daily newspaper’s club and a pharmaceutical company — were held simultaneously on the premises here.

‘Remove encroachments or face action’

The Punjab Government has decided to take action against sarpanches and officials concerned of the Rural Development and Panchayat Department, including the Block Development Officers and Panchayat Officers, if it is found that common land, cremation grounds, grazing lands and ponds in villages have been encroached upon and they haven’t done anything about it.

Sec 144 imposed in northern sectors
Chandigarh, May 19
The Chandigarh Administration has banned the assembly of five or more persons in the sectors north of Madhya Marg from Sunday midnight by invoking Section 144 of the Cr PC. The ban will remain in force till July 19.

1,500 persons appear before board
Chandigarh, May 19
More than 1,500 persons, who had applied for 114 vacancies of constables to be filled under the sports quota, appeared before the Recruitment Board for the measurement on May 14, 15 and 16.
