Near-total bandh in Sangrur
Tribune News Service

Sangrur, May 19
The police has registered a case against Mr Balraj Singh Sohi, president of the District Bar Association; Mr Joginder Singh Kherri, Mr Surjit Singh Kherri, Mr Daljit Singh Sekhon, Mr Satish Kansal, Mr Devinder Sharda, Mr Harkewal Singh Sajuma, all advocates, and others under Section 353, 332, 186, 188, 148 and 149 of the IPC.

Giving this information here tonight, a senior police officer said the lawyers and others had been booked for obstructing public servants from discharging their duty and violating the order passed under Section 144 of the CrPC.

The case had been registered against the lawyers and others in connection with the hooliganism which took place the previous day near the District Judicial Complex here when the lawyers had been going to lay the foundation stone in the newly-built Judicial Complex for the construction of chambers.

To prevent the lawyers from laying the foundation stone, the police had lathi charged the lawyers. In that lathi charge and scuffle, at least 30 lawyers were injured while seven policemen, including a DSP, had received injuries.

Meanwhile, on the call of the District Bar Association the shopkeepers and traders today observed near total bandh in the town. A large number of policemen were deployed even today by the authorities near the newly-built judicial complex.

The lawyers, led by Mr Balraj Singh Sohi, president of the Sangrur District Bar Association, today marched in protest through the town against the lathi charge made by the police on lawyers yesterday. The police even today tried to stop the lawyers near the judicial complex from entering in the complex, but later they were allowed to go. After that they held a rally in the newly-built judicial complex.

The association president alleged that the administration did not allow the distribution of the copies of various newspapers in the town by lifting them from the stalls as the newspapers had carried the news items of lathi charge on the lawyers by the police.

Mr Sohi also announced that their agitation would continue till the starting of construction of the chambers. He also claimed that as per his knowledge the Punjab and Haryana High Court had not issued any order with regard to non-construction of chambers for the lawyers.

Later, addressing a press conference, Mr G. K. Singh, ADC, and Mr Jatinder Singh Aulakh, SSP said their primary duty was to maintain law and order which they were doing. They said they had also called the lawyers at 12.30 pm today to have talks but they did not turn up even till 1.30 pm.
