Ferozepore, February 25
In a shocking incident, a Border Security Force Inspector was shot dead by his subordinate in Mamdot, near here, this morning.

The deceased, Inspector Jarnail Singh of 75 Battalion, was allegedly fired at by Lance Naik A.K. Giri from his self-loading rifle.

Later, Lance Naik Giri also died in an exchange of fire with the BSF soldiers.

A case under Sections 307, 404 and 25 of the Arms Act of the IPC was registered at the Mamdot police station. Preliminary investigation revealed that an argument between the slain Inspector and the Lance Naik over the latter’s absence from duty was the provocation for the murder.

Lance Naik Giri, who was posted at the Gatti Hayat border outpost, reportedly went missing with his ammunition last night.

However, on being found by the Inspector at the house of Harbans Singh, about 2 km from the post, he opened fire at the Inspector.

Although he tried to escape after taking away Jarnail Singh’s revolver, he was surrounded by BSF soldiers. In the ensuing encounter, he was killed on the spot.

However, the antecedents of Harbans Singh remain unknown. While no senior BSF officer was available for comment, the police has initiated a probe.
