Japan overpower Uzbekistan

KOLKATA, Jan 10 (PTI) — A spirited Japan opened their campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan in the inaugural group-IV league match in the Sahara Cup Millennium Football Tournament at the Salt Lake Stadium here today.

Playing with a great deal of confidence, the young Japanese team, shot into the lead with striker Ohta keisuke finding the target just one minute before the lemon break, while the other striker Masaki Fukai completed the tally three minutes before the long whistle.

It was a convincing performance from the Japanese who enjoyed territorial advantage for most part of the match. Though the Uzbeks did manage to come close to goal mouth, they failed to get their act together inside the box.

After making a few exploratory raids on the Uzbek citadel, the Japanese managed to score when Ohta Keusuke slotted home from inside the box with none of the defenders in position.

The goal came after the hardworking Masaki Fukai’s right footer hit the cross piece and Ohta showed fine relfex in taking the shot giving no chance to the Uzbek goalkeeper Oleg Kaharov.

Uzbeks played their hearts out after the breather, but could not capitalise on the chances that came their way in a fast-paced encounter watched by a decent crowd.

The Japanese consolidated their position three minutes before the final whistle when Fukai deflected a free kick from captain Tadaaki Hirakawa much to the delight of his team-mates.

The Japanese team, mainly comprising students, played a cohesive game and relied on a combination of short and long passes to pierce the rival defence.

Both teams started on a cautious note but the diminutive Japanese wrested the initiative from a very early stage as they broke through the Uzbeks

The two Japanese strikers Ohta Keisuke and Masaki Fukai worked in tandem to unsettle the Uzbek defence which looked quite vulnerable at times. Naotake Hanyu and Keiji Yoshimari marshalled the midfield well and kept feeding the firing line for most part of the contest.

The Uzbeks, who have brought a clutch of talented youngsters, lacked the sting to pose much problems for their opponents.

The two Uzbek strikers Yuri Nikitov and Aleksey Zhdanov, who were expected to deliver the goods upfront, could not make much of an impact while their defenders also looked quite tentative at times.

The Uzbeks got the first chance to find the target in the 17th minute of the opening session but striker Zhdanov’s left footer went out by a narrow margin as the Japanese custodian Toshiyasu Takahara dived full length to stop the ball.

BPCL win Shastri hockey title

NEW DELHI, Jan 10 (PTI) — Bharat Petroleum lived on the edge before a missed stroke in the tie-break by the Punjab and Sind Bank helped them to retain the title in the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hockey Tournament here today. In a grim battle for supremacy, BPCL and PSB fought for more than an hour but only managed a 2-2 deadlock at the end of regulation time and the extra-time also failed to end the stalemate forcing the match into the tie-breaker.

Ajitpal Singh missed the first stroke and that cost PSB dearly as BPCL were on target with all the five chances for a 5-4 tie-break score.

In a repeat of last year’s final to left-half Ravi Naiker connected a pass from full-back Ajay Kumar and effected a reverse hit into the far corner of the net to put BPCL in the lead.

PSB in a desperate bid to equalise, stepped up the pressure and the game got confined to the midfield for the next 55 minutes with BPCL beefing up their defence.

The match turned alive and fortunes fluctuated towards the end of regulation period with three goals being scored in the last ten minutes.

PSB forward Dominik launched a blitzkrieg in the 61st minute when he dribbled with lightning speed and smashed into the goal for the equaliser leaving the rival custodian stranded.

BPCL once again went into the lead when their centre-half scored a field goal to make it 2-1.

A complacent petroleum team was shocked when the bankers overcame the disparity within two minutes as Saurab Bishnoi converted the fourth penalty corner.

The extra-time was marked by heightened attacks and counter-attacks by both the teams. But the golden goal proved elusive and the status-quo remained.

In the tie-breaker, BPCL custodian Joaquim effected a crucial save lunging to his right to ward off a sharp shot by Sabu Virkey which proved to be PSB’s undoing.

Injury-hit South Africa humble Lanka

PAARL (South Africa), Jan 10 (AFP) — Jacques Kallis hit an unbeaten century as South Africa overcame an alarming injury list and gained their eighth successive limited overs win when they beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the third one-day international at Boland Park here yesterday.

The win achieved with seven balls to spare - in which Herschelle Gibbs made only one to add to his duck in the second Test last week on his recall after serving a six month ban for his part in the Hansie Cronje match-fixing scandal - gave the home side a 3-0 lead in the six-match series.

Faced with a challenging target of 248, South Africa were set on the way to victory by Boeta Dippenaar, who made 65, and Jacques Kallis, who finished 100 not out, put on 111 for the second wicket.

Jonty Rhodes then gave the innings crucial impetus as he made a sparkling unbeaten 75 off 59 balls.

Earlier, Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya made a return to form, hitting 66 in a Sri Lankan total of 247 for four.

The left-handed Jayasuriya put on 110 for the first wicket with Romesh Kaluwitharana, who went on to make top score of 83.

Kallis, who received treatment for a bruised right hand after dropping Kaluwitharana, took his right hand off his bat several times early in his innings but appeared to be batting more comfortably as his innings progressed.

Kallis played the anchor role for his team after Gibbs was trapped lbw in the third over.

It took him 88 balls to reach fifty with only one four but he accelerated towards the end.

He hit a huge six over square leg off a Jayasuriya full toss in the 48th over and finished the match with his third four in the next over from Vaas to bring up his sixth one-day international century off 139 balls.

Dippenaar made his 65 off 100 balls with five fours, while Rhodes raced to his fourth consecutive one-day international half-century off 42 balls with four fours.

Jayasuriya wore the look of a relieved man as he batted his way into some sort of form having performed poorly on the tour, scoring only 10 runs in the first two one-day internationals and 34 runs in four innings in the first two Tests.

But he struck the ball crisply yesterday, hitting seven fours and a six in an 83-ball innings.

Kaluwitharana, who faced 117 balls and hit eight fours, was dropped four times, including difficult caught and bowled chances to Shaun Pollock when he had 11 and Kallis when he was on 30.

He was dropped twice off Nicky Boje on 81, by Gibbs at midwicket and Alan Dawson at wide long-on.

Dawson, (31), a late replacement after the withdrawal of Allan Donald (abscess on right elbow) and Roger Telemachus (neck spasm), had an unhappy return to international cricket conceding 58 runs in nine overs and limped off with a strained right hamstring.

It was a further injury blow to a side that has been plagued by injuries in recent days.

Opening batsman Gary Kirsten withdrew on the day of the match after being hit on the left hand during a net practice and a scan revealed he had a cracked metacarpal.

He is expected to miss the remaining three one-day internationals and is a doubtful starter for the third and final Test starting at Centurion on January 20.

Donald, who was expected to be fit for the fourth international in Cape Town on Thursday, will definitely not play but may turn out for the fifth match in Bloemfontein on Sunday.

South African physiotherapist Craig Smith revealed that Test fast bowler Mfuneko Ngam, who was not selected for the one-day series, had a “hot spot” on his right thigh bone and may not be able to play in the final Test.

Aussies hope to start with win

MELBOURNE, Jan 10 (AFP) — Steve Waugh has challenged his top-order batsmen to mend their ways on the eve of the triangular one-day series with the West Indies and Zimbabwe, saying they were to blame for the team’s recent poor limited overs record.

While Australia have won a record 15 successive Tests, they have been victorious in just two of their past eight one-day internationals.

It’s a record skipper Waugh wants to correct, starting with tomorrow’s opening game against the West Indies at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

“We had a talk amongst the batsmen this morning,” Waugh said today. “It wasn’t about going on a witch-hunt or analysing every ball, it was about our attitude.”

Waugh, who will be playing his 300th one-day international, said the “responsibility fell on all the batsman” for the team’s poor record.

“We weren’t playing as well as we have been playing, our shot selection was poor and our running between the wickets wasn’t good,” he said.

“We weren’t showing enough respect for the game and we weren’t showing enough respect for ourselves in the way we play the game.”

But while Waugh identified Australia’s batting as their recent one-day weakness, it is the attack that looks threadbare this time.

For the first time this summer both Brett Lee and Jason Gillespie will be unavailable through injury while Damien Fleming and Michael Kasprowicz are still on the comeback trail.

That leaves Glenn McGrath and first gamer Nathan Bracken as the only specialist pace bowlers in the 12-man squad and Bracken will be under pressure to maintain his place after Fleming took three for 18 for Australia A against the West Indies yesterday.

And the Australians also have a history of beginning one-day tournaments poorly, having lost their opening tri-series game in the past three years.

Waugh is expecting a far more even one-day series than the 5-0 Test whitewash over the West Indies with the tourists having already shown they will be a handful in the shortened game after thrashing Australia A in Adelaide.

“It certainly is a game that evens up the skill level,” Waugh said. “There is more scope for surprises in one day cricket.

“There is no guarantee we are going to win every game but if we play to our ability the other sides are going to find it hard to beat us.”

Australia: Steve Waugh (capt), Adam Gilchrist, Mark Waugh, Ricky Ponting, Michael Bevan, Damien Martyn, Darren Lehmann, Andrew Symonds, Ian Harvey, Shane Warne, Nathan Bracken, Glenn McGrath (12th man to be named).

West Indies: Sherwin Campbell, Wavell Hinds, Brian Lara, Marlon Samuels, Jimmy Adams (capt), Ricardo Powell, Ridley Jacobs, Laurie Williams, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Nixon Mclean, Cameron Cuffy, Sylvester Joseph (12th man).

Kapil deposes before Madhavan
From Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, Jan 10 — Former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev today deposed before BCCI inquiry commissioner K. Madhavan at an undisclosed venue to record his statement on the cricket betting and match-fixing scandal. Former CBI Joint-Director Madhavan is conducting an inquiry on behalf of the BCCI, following submission of the CBI report on the betting and match-fixing scandal on October 31, 2000.

Mr Madhavan said at a hurriedly called press briefing late this evening at the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) premises that Kapil had agreed to meet him today morning only on the condition that he should not be “exposed” to the media as he wanted to conduct the meeting “silently”.

Mr Madhavan said his meeting with Kapil started at 9 am and concluded at 6.40 p m. “We had a three- and-a-half hour session in the morning when all the facts and evidence in the CBI report and my own inquiry earlier relating to Kapil was put to him, and Kapil answered in a free and frank manner”, Mr Madhavan explained.

Mr Madhavan said Kapil was “helpful, communicative and co-operative, and there was absolutely no human problem”. He said it took another six to seven hours to type out the report, and after corrections by Kapil, the final statement ran into 15 pages.

Mr Madhavan said he was “satisfied with the co-operation extended by Kapil. He could freely express what he wanted to say”.

The BCCI inquiry commissioner disclosed that he put to Kapil questions relating to Manoj Prabhakar’s allegations against the former Indian captain of offering him money and Kapil’s decision not to enforce the follow-on in the Ahmedabad Test against New Zealand when he was manager of the Indian team a couple of seasons ago.

Mr Madhavan said he had gathered new facts and had made additions and amendments to the CBI report after his inquiry thus far.

Bell slams ton

MUMBAI, Jan 10 (PTI) — England skipper Ian Bell slammed an attractive 109 off 185 balls as his team took a 24-run first innings lead against India on the second day of the four-day under-19 cricket Test match at Wankhede Stadium here today.

Resuming at the overnight score of 24 for no loss, England lost their first wicket at 43 that of Nicky Peng who was run out for 30 in 41 balls with six fours.

However, Bell, who looked in fine nick and Gary Pratt (28) added 64 runs for the second wicket and built a solid platform for the lower order batsmen to give their team a slight advantage with a score of 281 for nine off 107 overs at the end of the second day.

Tailenders Justin Bishop on 13 and Monty Panesar on one were at the crease at stumps. On day one India, electing to bat, were allout for 257.

North have edge on West Zone
By Gopal Sharma
Tribune News Service

SAS Nagar, Jan 10 — With match-fixing blues no more there to haunt him, former India wicketkeeper Nayan Mongia must be feeling mightily relieved. Mongia, who at one time was an integral part of the Indian cricket team, would certainly be eager to get down to business in all seriousness and prove that he was still good for international cricket when West Zone clash with North Zone in the four-day Duleep Trophy match scheduled to get under way at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium here tomorrow.

Utterances of the chairman of the selection committee Chandu Borde who recently said Mongia was very much in the reckoning for selection to the national squad as the current favourite Vijay Dahiya though improving lacked experience and exposure must be very comforting for him which should spur him to perform better. But the facts that West Zone conceded five points to Central Zone in their previous outing at Nagpur, while North Zone showcased their intimidating batting might in the previous match where they plundered runs at will against the hapless South Zone bowling attack, piling up a mammoth 708 for the loss of eight wickets, must be the causes of worry for the Baroda player and skipper of the squad.

North Zone, under the leadership of Punjab skipper and former international Vikram Rathore looks a fairly balanced squad. The sight of their batsmen unleashing their might on the rival bowlers as was the case in the previous match can be quite unnerving for any opposition bowling attack at this level. Rathore and Aakash Chopra, both openers who made centuries in the previous match, Yuveraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, Reetinder Sodhi and Dinesh Mongia, who has had a wonderful season with the willow so far, are all well known names in domestic cricket. The inclusion of Pankaj Dharmani, who is playing in place Dahiya, will further bolster their batting.

Rathore while having a close look at the wicket around noon looked pleased with the green top prepared for the match and revealed his heart saying that the grass should not be chopped off.

“We will play four seamers, including three regular ones,” he stated implying that Gagandeep Singh, Surinder Singh and Aashish Nehra would test the rival batsmen on a seemingly seamer-friendly track with allrounder Reetinder Sodhi providing the back-up support. Rathore disclosed that Dharmani would keep the wickets as Dahiya was not playing the match. Regarding the rest of the team, Rathore said since four seamers had been selected it had been decided to play only one spinner. Sarandeep Singh, the Amritsar off-spinner who made a successful debut against Zimbabwe recently, had been included in the squad.

“Yuveraj, Sehwag and even Mongia can chip in with a couple of overs of spin bowling if need be. So there is no need to include one more spinner,” Rathore said.

West Zone would surely miss the presence of batting genius Sachin Tendulkar and doughty allrounder Ajit Agarkar both of whom have been ‘rested’, while Vinod Kambli, former India player, has not been selected on account of injury. Nevertheless, West are quite a formidable outfit having proven performers in their ranks. Besides dependable openers like Wasim Jaffer and William Cooners, they have decent batsmen in Abhijit Kale, Hrishikesh Kanitkar, Jacob Martin and S Kotak who all can be trusted to put enough runs on the board.

Their pace bowling attack will be spearheaded by left-arm bowler Zaheer Khan, who made an impressive beginning to his international career. Iqbal Siddiqui and Santosh Saxena, likely to share the burden of pace attack, have good credentials as seamers and can be quite handful on the seamer-friendly track. Spin attack in the hands of Sairaj Bahutule, Valmik Buch and Romesh Powar appears safe.

Mongia said there was no injury problems except for Saxena, who had a sprained neck. He stated that the playing eleven would be decided tomorrow.

Morning winter conditions with overnight dew having seeped into the wicket with a fair amount of grass on it should be tempting enough for the pace bowlers of both the sides to make first use of the track. An absorbing tussle between the bat and the ball should unfold when the battle starts. A delayed start, however, looks imminent in view of the fog.

Teams: North Zone: Vikram Rathore (captain), Dinesh Mongia, Sarandeep Singh, Yuveraj Singh, Reetinder Sodhi, Gagandep Singh, Pankaj Dharmani, Aakash Chopra, Virender Sehwag, Aashish Nehra and Surinder Singh.

West Zone: Nayan Mongia (captain), Cooner Williams, Jacob Martin, Zaheer Khan, Valmik Buch, H Kanitkar, Abhijit Kale, Iqbal Siddiqui, M Kotak, P P Joshi, Wasim Jaffer, S Saxena, Sairaj Bahutule, R Powar, Niraj Patel.

Umpires: Sanjeev Rao (Indore) and Suhas Phadkar (Nagpur).

Suresh moves up in boxing

PUNE, Jan 10 (UNI) — Olympian Suresh Singh of Central Industrial Security Force along with Rosema Colney and Bhola Murmu of the Services Sports Control Board posted wins and entered the pre-quarterfinal of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC)-sponsored 47th Senior National Boxing Championship here yesterday.

The reigning joint champions SSCB and their arch-rivals RSCB, however, continued their dominations while the other contender, CISF, had mixed fortunes so far.

Hosts Maharashtra pugilist, after their impressive showing on the first two days, were at the receiving end as their best bet Girish Pawar and Navin Surwade bowed out in the light fly weight category. Pawar went down fighting against Bhim Singh of Assam Rifles on points 17-20 despite dominating the first two rounds. Navin found his Meghalaya rival Torakkha Pran, a difficult proposition, and lost in the fourth round when the refrees stopped the fight after his nose started bleeding.

The third services boxer Bipin Pyngrope, the title holder in the bantam weight class who repladed injured Dingko Singh, brought into submission his Tamil Nadu rival R. Kanan in the third round when the referee stopped the contest.

Suresh Singh, a member of the Indian boxing team at the recently concluded Sydney Olympics, found S.K. Thapa of Assam Rifle a tough nut to crack before recording a fluent 18-7 win on points in the light flyweight category. Colney, who represented the country in the Presidents Cup in Indonesia, was also made to give out his best before getting the better of a resilient Santosh Kumar of Bengal on split points decision 13-12 while Bhola proved too good for Ahidur Rohman of Assam before the referee stopped the contest in the third round.

Murmu also showed his prowes though Rohman of Assam gave him some anxious moments and traded punches. Murmu finished in style, connecting a pulsating right cross on the rival who buckled to the canvas but the referee stopped the contest.

Following are the results (light fly weight): Pramendra Sharma (UP) b Ramesh Singh (Chd), Sandeep Kumar (AP) b Anurag (HP), Ramesh Sahare (MP) b Khemanand (CISF), Rosema Colney (SSCB) b Santosh Kumar Thakur (Ben), Bhola Murmu (SSCB) to Ahidur Rohman (Assam), Torak Khapran (Meg) b Navin Surwade (Mah), Shrinivasa Rao (RSPB) b Sanjay Tagor (Delhi), A.L. 7 Asian teams for school hockey
Tribune news Service

CHANDIGARH, Jan 10 — Seven Asian teams will vie for honours in the third Asian Schools Hockey Championship for boys (under-18), scheduled to be held at the Astroturf ground of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, from January 18. The eight-day tournament is being organised by the Punjab Education Department in association with the School Games Federation of India.

Giving this information to mediapersons here this morning, Mr Tota Singh, Education Minister, Punjab, said the participating countries included Iran, Malaysia, Singapore, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan and hosts India. Nepal had also evinced interest in taking part but the deadline for sending entries for the tournament had ended. Therefore, their chances of participation seem remote and doubtful.

Regarding Pakistan’s participation in the championship, who were also sent an invitation to take part, the minister said there was no confirmation till date from Pakistan. However, it is doubtful whether the Government of India would have given visas to Pakistan players to take part in the championship given the state of relations between the two countries at the moment.

The minister said the Punjab Government was committed to providing impetus to sports in schools of Punjab and this Asian Schools Hockey Championship was being organised to give a boost to the national game. He, however, felt that schools tournaments were not getting adequate attention as they should. He also informed that an exhibition match involving the visiting teams would be played on January 21 at village Tarkhanabad (Moga), which was the hub of hockey activity in the state and had produced many international hockey players.

Mr R.S. Sandhu , secretary, Education, Punjab, and Chairman of the tournament committee, disclosed the seven teams were divided into two pools with pool A comprising India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka while pool B has Malaysia, Singapore, Iran and Uzbekistan. The matches will be played on a league basis till the knock-out stage, which will start at the semifinals level. He said the teams would be provided all hospitality as also free transportation from Amritsar and Delhi airports. He said Ludhiana had been selected as the venue of the tournament as the Astroturf at the Burlton Park Stadium in Jalandhar was not in proper shape.

Mr P.S. Chhabra, Secretary-General, SGFI said the camp for 24 Indian probables would end today at the Sector 42 hockey stadium in Chandigarh and tomorrow the selected players would start practising at the PAU Astroturf, the venue of the championship. The final squad would have 18 members. Mr Chhabra said Mr Satpal of Delhi had been made chairman of the selection committee. Mohun Bagan lift Rovers Cup

MUMBAI, Jan 10 (UNI) — Mohun Bagan yesterday outclassed Zee Churchill Brothers 2-0 to annexe the Rovers Cup football trophy for the 14th time in its centenary year.

For the Goan outfit it was a great disappointment for the third time.

Jayanta Sen’s superb first-time volley from the right corner of the box in the 20th minute and Dulal Biswas’s quick anticipation in slamming the second goal told only the half story of Bagan’s domination.

The match, witnessed by a big crowd with Bengalis outnumbering Goans, was full of excitement and some hacking fouls.

Churchill Brothers actually should have been one up in the very fifth minute when Igor Sukurim’s shot deflected back perfectly for Francis Silveira to drive at the post but Hussein Mustafi made a goal-line save.

The first goal came after referee P. Baskar had ignored a foul on Jose Barretto in the box. Sen’s two footed shooting ability came to the fore as he darted to the right to receive a floater. Churchill Brothers goalie Edward Ansah did not expect Sen to kick instantly and was looking at other Bagan forwards for the pass when the latter executed the shot.

The second goal came in the 34th minute after the half time when Ansah, in a desperate bid, was crossing the half line frequently. In one counter raid R.P. Singh sprinted with the ball and as Ansah outran him to take his position he cheekily back heeled for Dulal to plug the left corner.
