DHAKA, Nov 10 (PTI) — Middle-order batsmen Habibal Bashar and seasoned Aminul Islam milked an ordinary Indian bowling on way to scoring half-centuries as Bangladesh put up a credible 239 for six on the first day of their maiden Test match here today.

Unbeaten 70 runs by Aminul and Bashar’s splendid 71 inspired the Test debutants, while the Indians, expected to dominate the hosts, ended a frustrating day with still four Bangladesh wickets remaining to be taken.

As Bangladesh celebrated their elevation as the 10th Test playing nation amidst fanfare, Bashar and Aminul’s performances provided an icing on the cake at the end of the day.

With Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself present to witness the occasion, the packed Bangabandhu Stadium cheered the players throughout the day with every single run scored.

Bashar joined the action in the middle after the Indian pace debutant Zaheer Khan had struck the first blow removing Mehrab Hossein (4), who edged a catch behind to Saba Karim.

The one down batsman, who was ignored in the first list of team announced by the Bangladesh selectors, made good the opportunity and justified his inclusion with a magestic innings.

Seasoned Javagal Srinath, returning to the team after months of inaction, could hardly generate any pace or swing from the track and went wicketless for the day, while young Zaheer was menacing at times.

Bangladesh opener Sharihar Hossain (12) was next to go edging spinner Sunil Joshi to Indian skipper Saurav Ganguly, setting the stage for Bashar-Aminul partnership.

Zaheer was at it again when he induced a well-set Bashar to go for a big one but instead the batsman snicked the ball for Ganguly to take the catch in the slips.

After Bashar’s departure, former national captain Aminul, who had a slow start, went from strength to strength providing a knock of substance which helped Bangladesh cross the 200-run mark comfortably.

Left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi was the most successful Indian bowler with three wickets for 69 runs, but there was nothing to cheer for India at the end of the day.

Left-arm fast bowler Zaheer celebrated his debut with two wickets and was economical conceding only 36 runs in 14 overs, while Ajit Agarkar chipped in with one wicket for 46 runs.

Bangladesh to play more Tests

DHAKA, Nov 10 (UNI) — Bangladesh will visit Pakistan to play two Test matches there if India’s upcoming tour of Pakistan does not materialise, Secretary of Bangladesh Cricket Board, Mr Ashraful Haq informed here today.

Speaking to the UNI Mr Haq said the Bangladesh tour of Pakistan would be backed up by a back-to-back series where Pakistan would play two Test matches in Bangladesh. Mr Haq said in case the India’s tour to Pakistan materialised, then Bangladesh would play two Test matches in April next year with Zimbabwe.

He said from next session Bangladesh would be placed in the ICC Test calendar and would play at least 25 Test matches in next five years meeting all the Test playing countries in the process.

Mr Haq informed that the Bangladesh Cricket Board, to prepare its team for these events, has drawn elaborate plan and signed contract with 20 of its national ranking players. Mr Haq said: “We are the first Asian country to introduce contract system. We now have 20 players under contract. We are committed to looking after our players and as a return we also want 100 per cent commitment from them.

He said the contract with the players was for one year which was renewable at the end of the year after judging their performance. The present 20 players under contract were chosen after judging their current form and fitness. Beside this contract, the BCB had also drawn up several other schemes for the improvement of the game in the country.

Mr Haq said BCB which had about 2000 registered players under its fold, prepared a very exhaustive development programme at the junior level. “We have about 200 boys under four age group — under-13, under-14, under-17 and under-19 years — who were undergoing training under four coaches who have been hired from Sri Lanka. Hopefully quite a few of them would come up to fill the vacancy caused by the senior players time to time.”

Mr Haq informed that to raise the necessary fund, the BCB had made a five-year contract with World Tel for a five-year period for television right here. Though he did not disclose the exact amount, it was quote handsome. Besides, the BCB had also made a deal with Coca Cola for being the sponsor of Bangladesh team for three years.

According to the contract, Coke would pay the BCB taka 60 lakh each year plus another taka 30 lakh extra for improvement of infrastructure, he added.

Tour opener ends in draw

INDORE, Nov 10 (UNI) — Zimbabwe decided to play it safe batting for 68 minutes after tea, thus ensuring that the three-day match against National Cricket Academy played here today ended in a tame draw.

Zimbabwe who resumed at their overnight score of 84 for two batted on till 68 minutes after tea before declaring at 320 for five. National Cricket Academy XI ended the final day on 42 for one after being set a target of 320 to win in 11 overs.

The Zimbabweans decided to give their batsmen some batting practice ahead of the Test matches rather then setting a chasable target to the National Cricket Academy.

Andy Flower, who along with Alistair Campbell is Zimbabweans main batsman, came into timely form after failing in the first innings making a century before retiring to let the other batsmen have a go at the bowlers on a pitch which was still playing true.

After resuming at their overnight score of 84 for two, Flower seemed in a mood to redeem himself as he went after the bowling with a vengeance. He was especailly severe on the spinners carting them to all corners of the field.

Madondo at the other end, also looked set to play a big innings bringing up his fifty with a flick to the square leg boundary of R. Patel. His fifty contained seven hits and came in 80 balls.

He, however, did not last long as Sodhi brought on v sivaramakrishnan for the first time in the day in the 25th over and he struck immediately as Madondo played back and missed the line of the ball to see his furniture getting disturbed behind him. Madondo made 65 runs in a stay of 187 minutes and having faced 108 balls with seven hits to the fence.

After Madondo’s dismissal, Flower showed how to play spin bowling as he had no trouble in taking apart the Indian spinners, being especially harsh on left armer V. Sivaramakrishnan.

PERTH, Nov 10 (AFP) — Young West Indies fast bowl Kerry Jeremy will remain with the touring squad in Australia despite undergoing surgery later today on a jaw broken in two places.

A West Indies spokesman said the decision for Jeremy to remain in the 16-man squad was based on the belief the 20-year-old from Antigua would recover quickly.

If all went well, he could be playing again in four weeks, the spokesman said.

The tour, embracing five Tests — the first starting November 23 — and a one-day series against Australia and Zimbabwe, continues until mid-February.

Jeremy was felled at Perth’s waca Ground yesterday by former Test express bowler Matthew Nicholson on the opening day of the tourists’ initial first-class game of the tour, a four-day workout against Western Australia.

Safin dreams of top spot

St PETERSBURG (Russia), Nov 10 (Reuters) — US Open champion Marat Safin, in a tight race with Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten for the world number one ranking, is dreaming of winning the title, but also admits he is feeling the pressure.

“I really want to be number one and I want it now, not next year or the year after,” Safin told Reuters following his first round win over little-known Russian compatriot Igor Kornienko at the St Petersburg Open on Wednesday.

“If I win it this year, I’ll be the youngest ever to become the world number one and that’s what I really want.”

If Safin achieves his goal, at the age of 20 years and ten months, he will surpass the record of John McEnroe, who became the number one on March 3, 1980, at the age of 21 years 15 days.

With only three weeks of the season left, Safin (661 points) is second in the ATP champions’ Race, just three points behind French Open title-holder Kuerten (664). Wimbledon champion Pete Sampras is third with 637 points.

“I wouldn’t lie to you. Every morning I look on the internet page to see how is Kuerten doing in Lyon and I’m sure he does the same thing by checking on me playing here,” Safin said with his usual broad smile.

“He has never been number one before and I’m sure he’s as hungry as myself to get it.”

But the big-serving Russian admits the pressure is taking its toll on him.

“I haven’t played well in the last few weeks. It’s been a long and hard season and I’ve done a lot of running, jumping around and all those things both on and off the court,” he said.

“The BCCI report claimed that Martin Crowe received $ 20,000 for providing information to Indian bookmaker M.K. Gupta in 1992.

“Martin has strenuously denied the allegations against him and has welcomed the initiation of an independent, New Zealand-based inquiry,” New Zealand cricket chief executive Christopher Doig said in a statement.

Indian men advance; women held

ISTANBUL, Nov 10 (PTI) — Indian men advanced in the standing’s list with a fine 2.5-1.5 victory over Kyrgyzstan while the women remained on course for a respectable finish, drawing with Belarus 1.5-1.5, in the 12th round of the 34th Chess Olympiad here today.

Top seed Russia put up another good show to overwhelm Armenia with a huge margin of 3.5-0.5 in the men’s section. The Russians have 34 points in their kitty now and enjoy a 2-point lead over nearest rival Germany who downed the USA 3-1.

India is tied for the 10-13 spot with 28.5 points to its credit. The next round of the remaining two rounds will be crucial for India as they take on a not-so-strong Poland.

In the women’s event, the Chinese (28 points) are cruising to a smooth victory. They defeated Germany 2-1 and have a 2.5 points lead over Georgia. Indian women have accumulated 20 points.

It was Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran who anchored the Indian victory today. Playing white against e. moldobaev, the Indian stalwart firmly put behind the loss yesterday and crushed the Modern Benoni defence.

After routine opening moves, Sasikiran emerged with a slight advantage and slowly squeezed the counter attack on the queenside with timely blockades by minor pieces.

When Sasikiran initiated a king-side attack, Moldobaev sensed imminent trouble. Fearing disaster, Moldobaev decided to sacrifice his queen bishop pawn but did not get the desired counter play.

Sasikiran pushed the central pawns to create decisive threats and won on the 51st move.

The other three boards for India ended in draws. On the second board, GM Abhijit Kunte took on V. Magai from the black side of a Queens Indian defence and did not have any difficulty in equalizing after the opening.

The pieces got exchanged at regular intervals and the peace treaty was signed after 39 moves.
