Lanka cruise to 5-wkt win

SHARJAH, Oct 20 (PTI) — Sachin Tendulkar’s valiant 101 went in vain as India went down to Sri Lanka by five wickets in the opening match of the triangular one-day cricket series here today.

Tendulkar waged a lonely battle as he cracked his 26th one-day hundred to lead India to 224 for eight in their 50 overs after they elected to bat.

In reply, Sri Lanka, helped by some responsible knocks from Russel Arnold, captain Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumara Sangakkara scored the required runs losing five wickets with 6.1 overs to spare.

It was a disappointing performance by the Indians who, after showing a lot of promise in the ICC knock-out tournament in Nairobi, were outplayed in every department of the game by the spirited Sri Lankans.

Sri Lanka played positive cricket right from the start and once they restricted the Indians to a modest total they knew they always had a chance.

Though Sri Lanka lost opener Avishka Gunawardene (9) and Marvan Atapattu (0), both caught by wicket-keeper Vijay Dahiya off Vankatesh Prasad, with just 21 runs on the board, they made up for it by a fine 73-run partnership between Jayasuriya (48) and Mahela Jayawardene (38).

Jayasuriya played a flamboyant innings and took full advantage of the field restrictions in the first 15 overs. He was particularly severe on Prasad, who was punished for 37 runs off his first five overs.

Electing to bat, the Indians struggled against some accurate bowling and fielding by the Sri Lankans and except for Tendulkar, who played a very patient knock of 101 runs to see his team almost through to the end, the rest of the batsmen disappointed.

The four run-outs at crucial moments did the Indians no good. And the way Rahul Dravid (16) got out to a direct hit from Jayasuriya, he deserved to be sent back to coaching schools for basic lessons of the game.

Only Robin Singh (35) provided the batting maestro with some support with the two adding exactly 100 runs for the fifth wicket.

However, it was Tendulkar’s show all the way. He was remarkably calm in his 140-ball knock perhaps aware of his task when Saurav Ganguly, Dravid and Vinod Kambli were back in the pavilion with just 87 on the board, and hit only three fours and a six off Sanath Jayasuriya.

Tendulkar was long overdue for a big score, reaching the thirties and forties in the last couple of matches but unable to consolidate thereafter.

He finally came good today to complete his 26th one-day century and seventh at Sharjah, when the team needed it most. But for Sachin Tendulkar’s steady knock, the Indians would have been in deep trouble. Sachin reached his half-century off 71 balls with only two hits to the fence, evident of the restraint he showed after the loss of a few wickets.

Sourav Ganguly elected to bat and as he hit the first ball from Chaminda Vaas to the cover ropes, the crowd hoped for a repeat of ICC knock-out final in Nairobi where the Indian skipper along with Sachin Tendulkar put up a marathon opening stand.

We will ‘regain’ top status

CALCUTTA, Oct 20 (UNI) — Former world number one in tennis doubles Leander Paes is confident that he and Mahesh Bhupathi will regain their top status in the doubles soon.

The bronze medalist in Atlanta Olympics, now in the city for a couple of days after winning the doubles title in Japan Open partnering Mahesh Bhupathi recently, said the victory in Japan had led the Indian duo to dream again of reaching the top slot in doubles.

Leander said: “This victory has given a tremendous boost to our confidence. We are now set to improve further. We have now only one goal — to regain the topmost spot.”

After a poor performance for sometime since their reunion in August last, Paes and Bhupathi won five matches in Tokyo to bag their 16th title since they won the Wimbledon doubles title in 1999.

The Indian tennis ace said: “In Japan we beat strong teams and also won some close matches. Besides winning the title, consecutive victories in five matches has helped us believe in ourselves. I’m happy with our performance and combination there,” Leander said and adding “we still have some more work to do. The Japan Open has served as a very good launching pad for us for the year 2001.”

Asked what he felt the duo needed to regain the top position of 1999, Leander said: “The more matches we would play, the better we get. Our aim is to restore the high confidence level we had earlier. To keep ourselves fit is another important factor on which we have to keep a constant watch.”

Regarding their failure in the last Olympics Leander admitted that they could not prepare themselves well for the Olympics. He said: “Before this Olympics, myself and Bhupathy could play only a couple of tournaments. While we lost in the semi-final in the Hamlet Cup and then in the first round of the US Open, we were separated for a long time and could not prepare ourselves for the big event properly. Then we faced the top seeded pair of Mark Woodford and Todd Woodbridge in the very second round. The Woodies were also in very high morale after winning two grand slam titles before the Olympics. However, we tried our best in Sydney.”

Leander admitted that injury-forced lay off as led to the fall in his performance saying “you have to evaluate my performance in the Olympics keeping in mind that I was off for four months.”

He informed that his injury was not troubling him any more. Asked whether he would give another try in the next Olympics at Athens four years later, Leander said: “I would definitely love to be there. But it is too early to think of Athens now. I’m not sure whether I will be there to play big tennis till then.”

Leander and Bhupathy will play their next big tourney in the World Doubles Champion to be held in Bangalore in December next. But before that they would play five tournaments in Basel, Brussel, Lyon, Paris and Stockholm to sharpen their skill. Asked about their chance in the world doubles meet, Leander said: “Though we have been in the final twice, the title eluded us. It will be nice if we can win this title before our home crowd. I’m hopeful that we will be able to live up to the expectation in Bangalore.” Top

Davenport, Tauziat move up

LINZ(Austria), Oct 20 (AP) —Top seed Lindsay Davenport easily ousted Amanda Hopmans of the Netherlands yesterday in the $ 535,000 Generali Ladies Open, but sixth-seeded Amelie Mauresmo played sluggish game, losing in three sets to Kveta Hrdlickova.

Nathalie Tauziat, seeded fourth, had no trouble winning 6-2 in the first set against Karina Habsudova, but the Czech player kept the Frenchwoman on the run in the second set. Tauziat exploited the corners to win that set 7-5.

Davenport was relaxed and showed no signs of discomfort from the sore foot that sidelined her for three weeks after she withdrew from the Sydney Olympics. With an ace here and there, successful shots at the net and her trademark deep, pounding ground strokes, she defeated Hopmans 6-1, 6-1 in just 48 minutes.

Davenport is heavily favoured for an eventual matchup in the finals against second seed Venus Williams, who advanced in play on Wednesday by defeating Japan’s Ai Sugiyama.

It was Williams’s third straight match win. The last time she lost was against Arantxa Sanchez Vicario in the quarterfinals of the French Open on June 6.

France’s Mauresmo appeared headed to an easy victory, taking the first set 6-2 against Hrdlickova. But the Czech player was determined and capitalized on breaks in both of the last two sets, which she won 6-4 6-3.

Van Roost announces retirement

BRUSSELS, Oct 20 (AP) — Dominique Van Roost, Belgium’s highest-ranked women’s tennis player, announced her retirement yesterday, ending a 10-year professional career with four singles and four doubles titles.

The 27-year old Belgian, ranked 18th by the WTA Tour and winner of a bronze medal at the Sydney Olympics in the women’s double event, said the time was right for her to stop.

“I felt at the start of this year that I had achieved all the goals I had set out for myself in tennis, and the only one remaining was to win a medal at the Olympic Games,” Van Roost told reporters.

“I knew this was my final goal and I feel very fulfilled with my career. In fact, it has turned out much better than I expected.”

Van Roost won the Olympic doubles bronze medal last month with teammate Els Callens. The duo led Belgium to its first medal in tennis, defeating the Belarussian pair of Olga Barabanschikova and Natasha Zvereva.

“The Olympic Games was my biggest achievement in tennis, ahead of getting into the top 10,” Van Roost said.

While she says the death of her mother from cancer in March did not affect her decision, she said she would use her free time to spend more time with her father.

“I made up my mind before my mother died,” she said. “That was a very difficult time for me, but I am glad I played on through it.”

Struggling to find motivation afterward proved tough for the Belgian, but in just the fourth match after her mother’s death, Van Roost pulled off the biggest upset in any of the Grand Slams this season by defeating second-ranked Lindsay Davenport of the USA in the first round of the French Open.

Van Roost has won $ 2 million in prize money during her career. She won a total of 297 singles matches.

Her best Grand Slam performances came at the Australian Open, where she reached the quarterfinals in 1997 and 1999.

Van Roost made her breakthrough into the top 20 at the end of the 1997 season, and climbed to No 9 in 1998 after defeating both Venus Williams and Martina Hingis at Filderstadt, Germany. She was first Belgian to rank in the top 10.

Despite retiring officially, Van Roost says she will finish her commitments to her doubles partner Callens, competing in the Chase Championships on November 13, and will represent her country in the Fed Cup semifinals in Las Vegas on November 21-22.

Baboor moves into last 8

MUMBAI, Oct 20 (PTI) — India number one Chetan Baboor clinched a berth in the quarter-finals of the 15th Asian Cup Table Tennis Championship when he notched up his second straight win in men’s group C round-robin here today.

The Sweden-based Baboor, seeded third here and ranked 84th in the world, rallied in splendid fashion to outsmart Japan’s fourth-seeded Yanagida Toshinori, who is ranked 248th globally, in three games in his second league encounter.

Baboor, who easily outclassed Kim Joo Sang of Korea 21-17, 21-9 in his first pool match, dropped the opening game over extra points 20-22 against his Japanese rival before picking up his game and smashing his way to take the next two 21-14, 21-17.

Later Toshinori, who slumped to an upset defeat against China’s unseeded Hao Shuai in his first encounter, did the Indian a good turn by downing Kim 21-8, 20-22, 21-14.

Toshinori’s win over Kim ensured that Baboor would either top his pool or finish runner-up and in either case he would advance to the quarter-finals.

Baboor’s final league clash with Shuai will decide the second qualifier from this men’s group.

However, Baboor’s compatriot Poulomi Ghatak slid to her second straight defeat in the women’s group A.

Ghatak, who was beaten by Japan’s Abe Ayumi 21-11, 21-19 in her opening round clash, slumped to a 12-21, 10-21 defeat against Luyun Feng of Taipei in her next tie to virtually lose all hopes of advancing further in the tournament.

Korea in last 8 of Asian Cup

BEIRUT, Oct 20 (AFP) — A hatrick from ‘Lion King’ Lee Dong-Gook sent South Korea into the quarter-finals of the Asian Cup here yesterday as China and Kuwait drew to top group B.

Lee’s trio of goals handed South Korea a 3-0 victory over Indonesia, who made a limp exit from the tournament at Beirut’s Sports City Stadium.

With China and Kuwait drawing to take the top two places in the group with five points apiece, Korea’s win saw them qualify as one of the two best third-place finishers with four points.

They will now play Iran in a mouthwatering quarter-final duel in Tripoli next Monday. China top the group from Kuwait on goal difference, but their opponents will only be known when group C completes the first round on Friday.

“Our first objective was to reach the second round and we have done that,” said relieved South Korean coach Huh Jung-Moo.

“It was disappointing that we didn’t score with more of our chances but we are very happy to have reached the quarter-finals,” said Huh, who has been the target of fierce criticism in Korea after his side’s below-par showings here.

“In football you never know what is going to happen,” he said when asked about the quarter-final against the powerful Iranians. “We are ready for them ... we’ll be prepared.”

Lee pounced in the 30th, 76th and 90th minutes with a text-book display of markmanship.

Korea had dominated play in the first-half but were often let down by poor distribution and wayward finishing.

The first opportunity of note fell to Lee, but the 21-year-old striker’s free header from a Noh Jung-Yoon cross flew over the bar.

Fifteen minutes before half-time the Koreans got the goal that their territorial dominance deserved.

Park Ji-Sung crossed from the left flank and Lee arrived in the box to flick a deftly angled shot into the far corner from the edge of the six-yard area.

Indonesia had to wait until the 51st minute for their first shot on goal, midfielder Uston Nawawi rifling in a free-kick from just outside the area which was well-saved by Komang Putra Adnyana.

Korea continued to dominate in the second-half, peppering the Indonesian goal with a succession of chances.

They finally made sure of victory 14 minutes from time when Lee swept in a low shot from the edge of the area after a neat cutback from Seol. Lee completed his hattrick with a header on the stroke of full-time.

In Tripoli Kuwait dominated a tense match but were let down in front of goal against an understrength China.

China’s Serb coach Bora Milutinovic had decided to leave out defensive pillar Fan Zhyi and playmaker Lie Tie because both risked a second yellow card which would have ruled them out of the quarter-finals.

Both coaches were quick to rebut any suggestions they had been happy for their teams to play out a draw and settle for the first two qualification spots in the group — thus avoiding Iran in the last eight.

“People should know me better. I prefer to win than have friends — win first and drink with them afterwards,” Milutinovic said.

Kuwait’s Czech coach Dusan Uhrin echoed his counterpart’s words. “We would have won but we have a serious problem scoring. It’s becoming a serious psychological problem for us,” he said.

After starting cautiously the Chinese started the second-half in positive fashion and tested Kuwaiti ‘keeper Falah Dabsah.

They could even have won it with seven minutes to go when Eintracht Frankfurt striker Yang Chen’s volley from five yards out forced Dabsah into a superb save.

Twice previously they went close first through captain and Perugia striker Ma Mingyu, China’s first ever player in Serie A. The Kuwaitis were less fluent than in the first 45 minutes but had chances of their own to break the deadlock.

The bold decision of Uhrin to replace influential playmaker Bader Haji by Ahmed Musaa on the hour looked like a masterstroke when with his first touch he sent a pass across goal but unfortunately neither striker was there to touch it in.

Uhrin, who guided the Czech Republic to the Euro ’96 final, showed he wasn’t afraid of taking an even more daring decision with 15 minutes remaining when he took off Kuwaiti scoring icon Jassem Al Houwaidi.

The big forward, leading scorer in international football in 1998, cast a disconsolate figure as he trudged off, refusing to go to the halfway line to shake hands with his replacement Faraj Laheeb.

Dutch Open: Indian challenge ends

BANGALORE, Oct 20 (PTI) — The Indian challenge in the Holland Plaza Dutch Open Badminton Championships in Hertogenbosch ended with the defeats of Aparna Popat, Abhinn Shyam Gupta and Siddharth Jain, a Badminton Association of India release said here today.

Jain went down fighting to George Rimaredi of Sweden 10-15, 17-16, 10-15 while Gupta lost to Anders Boesen of Denmark 5-15, 11-15 in their second round matches yesterday.

The country’s top woman player Aparna Popat lost to Miho Tanaka of Japan 11-5, 8-11, 1-11.

In the Jain-Rimaredi match, the Indian, after losing the first game, was up 11-5 in the second when Rimaredi rallied to make it 14-12. At this juncture, Jain saved five match points to take the second game 17-16. In the third, Rimaredi led throughout to clinch the match.

Gupta fought well against second seeded Boesen but in vain.

USA take lead in Presidents Cup

GAINSVILLE, Oct 20 (AFP) — A stunning sweep of alternate stroke matches gave the USA a 5-0 lead over their International rivals here after the opening day of the fourth Presidents Cup matches.

The Americans won three matches 1-up after 18 holes to match the only sweep of a round in cup history, which came by the 1994 US squad in best-ball on the opening day of an eventual 20-12 romp.

“You can’t play much better as a team than we did,” said world number one Tiger Woods, who paired with friend Notah Begay to defeat second-ranked Ernie Els of South Africa and Masters Champion Vijay Singh of Fiji 1-up.

The non-European squad took some solace in the fact that they rallied from 4-1 down here in 1996 to lose only 16 1/2-15 1/2. But they were outplayed, leading only after three of 84 holes played, never after the third hole.

Other 1-up triumphs came from David Duval and Davis Love over Zimbabwe’s Nick Price and Paraguay’s Carlos Franco and by Hal Sutton and Jim Furyk over Australians Robert Allenby and Stuart Appleby.

Phil Mickelson and Tom Lehman blistered Aussies Steve Elkington and Greg Norman 5 and 4 while Kirk Triplett and Stewart Cink defeated Canada’s Mike Weir and South Africa’s Retief Goosen 3 and 2 in the other matches.

Competition continues with five alternate-stroke and five best-ball matches today, five best-ball matches tomorrow and 12 final singles matches on Sunday.

“In my wildest dreams I could not have expected 5-0,” US captain Ken Venturi said. “Tomorrow we’re going out 0-0. I don’t take anything for granted. You don’t want a letdown. If you have one you can’t get back up for Saturday.”

Both teams wore black ribbons in honour of 17 US sailors killed in a bomb blast aboard the USS Cole, the Internationals deciding to follow the US lead.

The Internationals lost the first two cups here at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club but captured the 1998 event in Melbourne 20 1/2-11 1/2 — the worst loss ever inflicted on an elite US squad.

But the Americans served notice they would not suffer much an indignity on home soil when Mickelson and Lehman routed their Aussie foes. And momentum kept rolling.

The biggest scare was with Woods. The US Open, British Open and PGA Championship winner and Begay squandered a 3-up edge after 10 holes, falling all square after 13.

“It was one of those things,” Woods said. “I didn’t feel as comfortable as I would have liked. I hadn’t hit shots that mattered in a while. I was a little tight, a little nervous. It was hard to get into the rhythm initially.”

But Woods birdied the par-4 14th to put the US duo 1-up, saved a halve at the 15th and sank a five-foot par-saving putt on the par-3 16th to stay ahead.

“After making the one at 15, I just had the feeling I would sink it,” woods said. “I just felt like it was one of those putts where I see the line, stroke it and it goes in.”

Singh missed an eight-foot birdie on 17 that would have squared the match and the teams halved 18 to end it.

“The putt on 16 was a bit of a blow,” Els said. “He made a big putt. He’s a great player. We just didn’t make the putts. We had our chances. We didn’t play the front nine very well.”

Duval hit a 12-foot birdie at the 14th and six-footer at 15 to put the US duo 2-up, the biggest lead of the match. Price hit a 20-foot birdie on the 17th but the US halved the last to complete the sweep.

“Three of the matches were close, so we haven’t given up yet,” Price said. “We can have a big day tomorrow and reduce the deficit.”

Mickelson and Lehman won seven of the first eight holes for a 6-up lead. Their Aussie rivals made four bogeys and a double-bogey in that span and added two bogeys in the last six holes.

“It’s not an easy format and we didn’t get into a rhythm or anything going,” Elkington said.

Norman birdied nine and 10 to try and rally but could not crack par again. The only halved hole was the last to seal the us win.

Cink and Triplett made seven birdies, three more than any other tandem on the day. They led 1-up through 11 before birdies on four of the last five holes to win a matchup of cup debutantes.

Triplett sank a 10-foot birdie at the 13th and a six-footer on the par-five 14th to put the US duo 4-up and, after a bogey to lose 15, he rolled home a 25-foot birdie to conclude the match.Top

Malleswari not sure of berth

NEW DELHI, Oct 19 (UNI) — Lone Indian medal winner at the Sydney Olympics Karnam Malleswari is not sure if she would be allowed to represent India at any of the international meets in the future.

"I had to fight many odds to earn a berth in the Indian squad for the Olympics and the same people may again try to put hurdles in my way,’’ She said today at a function organised by an IT company to felecitate her.

She said her decision to quit competitive weightlifting just after winning the bronze at the Olympics was taken as she was fed up with the problems created for her by those associated with the game.

It was just because of the support of my family, foreign coach and fans that prompted me to continue, Malleswari said.

"I could have won the gold had the going before the games been smooth for me,’’ she said.

The bronze medallist said she had not yet drawn out a training plan for the 2002 Asian Games but would be competing in the Afro-Asian Games and World Championships next year if allowed as many in the weightlifting establishment would not like her to continue.

Malleswari said that she would like to concentrate on her plans to establish a weightlifting academy so that the upcoming players do not have to go through the problems she faced.

She said that she would like to personally scout for talent from various parts of the country and not take in those who have been performing at junior-level competitions.

Later the six-time world billiards champion Geet Sethi, in his capacity as vice-president, Alliances and Relationships, of the company handed Malleswari a cheque for Rs 5 lakh.

Sethi said Malleswari, with her medal winning performance at the Olympics had opened psychological gates for women athletes and instilled a belief in them that they too could be among the best in the world.
