4 yrs’ RI for TN ex-minister

CHENNAI, Aug 4 (PTI) — Former AIADMK minister K. A. Sengottiyan was today found guilty in the Rs 2.60 crore spare parts purchase scam and was convicted to four years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) and a fine of Rs 1.05 lakh by a special judge here.

The then Managing Director of Jeeva Transport Corporation, Veerappan and the supplier, Natarajan were also found guilty in the scam and were sentenced to four years’ RI and asked to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh and Rs 92,000 respectively.

Special Judge A.C. Arumugaperumal Adityan in his judgement said the CB-CID had proved the case against the three beyond all doubts.

Sengottiyan is the fifth minister of the erstwhile AIADMK government to be convicted by the special courts set up by the DMK government to try cases of corruption during the chief ministership of Ms Jayalalitha between 1991-96.
