VC’s extension challenged in HC

NEW DELHI, May 14 (UNI) — The Delhi Court has issued notices in a case challenging continuance of Mr Mahmoodur Rehman as Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University.

Petitioner Noor Afzal, a senior professor at the university, said in his plea that Mr Rehman’s continuance as Vice-Chancellor beyond his term which expired on April 30, was illegal.

Mr Afzal said only the President could extend the term of a Vice-Chancellor. He said the Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Human Resource Development was not authorised to take such a decision and hence Mr Rehman was no longer a Vice-Chancellor.

The petitioner also claimed that he was entitled to function as Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university.

Justice N.G. Nandi has asked the respondents to file their replies by July 11.
