Clinton to get IIT doctorate
KANPUR, Feb 22 (PTI) — The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, will confer a doctorate upon US President Bill Clinton when he visits India next month as a gesture of goodwill for cooperation extended by his country for development of the institute, its Director Dr K.A. Padmanabhan, said today.

CALCUTTA, Feb 22 (PTI) — Youth Congress activists today stoned a local cinema hall screening Kamal Haasan’s film “Hey Ram”, smashing window-panes and lights in a continued protest by the party’s frontal wings against the film for allegedly portraying Mahatma Gandhi in a “bad” light.

Pak firing
SRIGANGANAGAR, Feb 22 (PTI) — Pakistan troops today opened unprovoked fire at an observation post in the Karanpur area of the Sriganganagar sector in Rajasthan but no casualties were reported, the BSF said. Indian jawans returned the fire, BSF Inspector-General B. Singh said by telephone from Jodhpur.

SC directive
NEW DELHI, Feb 22 (UNI) — The Supreme Court today directed the Centre to file within one week a copy of the already publicised order restraining the use of loudspeakers and high-volume producing sound systems throughout the country.

  HC suspends order
CHENNAI, Feb 22 (PTI) — The Madras High Court today suspended a special judge’s order convicting Former Tamil Nadu minister T.M. Selvaganapathy in the Pleasant Stay Hotel case and sentenced him to one year rigorous imprisonment.
