Malaysia rout Hong Kong KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 19 (PTI) Reigning champions South Korea struggled initially before downing Bangladesh 4-0 while Malaysia thrashed Hong Kong 8-1 in two group matches of the fifth Asia Cup Hockey Tournament here today. The champions had a tough first half in the group A encounter, failing to get past the plucky Bangladesh goalkeeper Rasel Khan Bappi, who had a great match. Korea could have easily scored around 10 goals but for Bappi who time and again effected brilliant saves. Seong Hwan helped Korea go 1-0 into the break before Jung Chul Kim struck immediately into the second half before Kwang and Kang rounded off the tally. Star forwards Mirnawan Nawawi and Nor Saiful Zaini struck two goals apiece as Malaysia warmed up for bigger battles to swamp Hong Kong. Leading 3-0 at the interval, Suhairi Saidi, Kuhan Shanmuga-Nathan, Keevan Raj, Gobinathan also joined the goal riot in the second half. When Korea scored in the 12th minute off a penalty corner, it looked as if the floodgates would open up. But Seong Hwans effort did not spur his team. On the other hand, it brought the best out of the Bangladesh defence with Bappi flinging himself all around the goal area. Korean midfield strove hard, but whenever they entered the striking circle there were atleast two defenders to dispossess with Bappi as the final line of defence using his gloves and pads to superb effect. The Koreans started the second half with a little more effort upfront. The midfield saw Seok Kyo Shin coming in. In the 39th minute, Jung Chul Kim finally scored off a penalty corner for the second goal. Ten minutes later, Kang sped into the circle and passed to Kwang who brilliantly deflected it in for Koreas third goal. Korea increased the lead in the 62nd minute when Kang scored off a deflection to round off the victory. Bangladesh made a few half-hearted attempts but Islam Kamal and Ahmed Ramiz could not get the necessary support upfront. Korean coach Sang was upset with the display but was confident they would do well in future games. I told them not to dribble too much but they still did that. In the meeting tonight, I will have a word with them, he said. Sang praised Bappi for his brilliant work and also said Bangladesh were very skilful. Most of my players had only two weeks training and some are returning after injuries. Muscle problems take time to heal, he said. Malaysian captain Mirnawan Nawawi and former captain Nor Saiful Zaini led the charge for the hosts as Malaysia went on the rampage to destroy Hong Kong 8-1 Malaysia utilised their opportunities well to get as much target practice as possible before the key match with India tomorrow. Malaysia started slowly as the first half which yielded three goals, through Suhairi Saidi, Kuhan Shanmuganathan and Mirnawan Nawawi. The deluge came in the second half with Malaysia getting their bearings right to swamp the Hong Kong goal with five goals. Hong Kong too finally got a consolation goal when their captain Farooq Saeed fired in a penalty corner. The second half Malaysian goals were scored by Keevan Raj, Saiful Zaini, Gobinathan, Mirnawan Nawawi and Saiful. Malaysian coach Stephen
van Huizen was happy with the performance but warned the
match with India would be tough. |

Saqlain runs through Aussie innings HOBART, Nov 19 (AFP) Saqlain Mushtaq mesmerised Australias batsmen taking career Test best 6-46 as Pakistan roared back into contention in the second cricket Test at Bellerive Oval here today. Ripping in his offspinners, sometimes above 100 kph on a conducive pitch, 22-year-old Saqlain swung the match after Australia had looked set to bat their way to the three-Test series on the back of another domineering Michael Slater innings. Needing to win here after being hammered by 10 wickets in the opening Brisbane Test, Pakistan appeared down and out when Australia were high-tailing at 191 for one with Slater poised for his 14th Test century. But chancy Slater was out in the 90s for the seventh time in tests when he dolled a catch to Ijaz Ahmed off Saqlain for 97 precipitating a stunning batting collapse nine wickets for 55. Within 101 minutes and 20.2 overs the number one Test nations batting was shredded firstly by Waqar Younis, who removed Mark Waugh (5) and Ricky Ponting (0) before Saqlain proved unplayable after tea. In four overs, Saqlain snared 4-6 and narrowly missed a hattrick in his 22nd over when he had Adam Gilchrist (7) stumped and bemused Shane Warne bowled first ball before a tough-and-go stumping decision next ball on Damien Fleming was turned down by the video umpire Steve Davis. But Saqlain claimed Fleming on the last ball of that over, trapping him lbw as Australia tottered to 236 for eight. Arjun Atwal strikes form CHANDIGARH, Nov 19 Arjun Atwal struck a bright patch, Vijay Kumar slumped with a four-over card and the defending champion and Chandigarh lad, Amritinder Singh, returned a one-under card for the third successive day. These performances on the penultimate day were the right ingredients for an exciting finale to the Hero Golf Chandigarh Open with eight players (margin of three strokes) in line for the Hero Golf Trophy. And with the conditions just right and the Chandigarh course playing perfect, it could be anybodys day tomorrow. But seeing the steadiness of Amritinder Singh one under for the third day and the return to form of Arjun Atwal, the two stand a good chance. Arjun Atwal took sole possession on top of the leaderboard with a fine three-under 69 today. Atwal (Calcutta) aggregated four-under 212 for three days and led by one stroke over Amritinder Singh of Chandigarh, who shot his third successive one-under 71 round. At joint third place were veteran Basad Ali (Calcutta) and Arjun Singh (Delhi) at two-under 214, while Shiv Prakash and Gaurav Ghei were tied fifth at one-under 215. Overnight leader Vijay Kumar dropped four strokes and was tied seventh along with Mukesh Kumar at level par 216. The reigning Wills Indian Open champion began with a bogey on the very first hole when he failed to make his up and down from the greenside bunker. Thereafter, he missed several short putts for birdie including a three-footer on the second. Four birdies on the third, eighth, 12th and 14th ensured he finished three-under for the day. Arjun was on song on the back nine and set himself several opportunities, including a five-feet chance, on the 13th and a six-footer on the 17th. I am pretty happy with the way I played today. My hitting was solid but I missed some short putts. I dont think there is anything wrong with my putting but just that the line here is difficult to read, said Atwal who was watched by his fiancee, Ritika, throughout the round. Yeah! I think she was a good influence on me, he added with a smile. After returning from the USA, Atwal finished sixth and third in the Hero Honda Masters and the Sabah Masters. I think my whole game is in the groove. I missed the cut last week at Johnnie Walker Classic but my back was really giving me trouble that week, he said about his form. Overnight leader Vijay Kumar looked out of touch today and despite making a birdie on the second, he was struggling throughout the day and ended four-over 76 for the day. I short-clubbed on many holes, but the real reason is that I was not feeling too well today and could not get into a rhythm, he said. Two hole-in-ones scored: Ali Sher continued his love story with his six-iron when he made a hole-in-one on the 162-yard, par-3 eighth hole. Yesterday, the twice Indian Open champion made an eagle with his second shot with the same 6-iron from water hazard on the fourth hole. But the first hole-in-one of the day was scored by amateur Harjinder Kang. Kang snatches lead: Kang surged ahead in the amateur section with a one-over 73 round which put him ahead of overnight leader Sandy Lehal, who shot a nine-over 81 to aggregate 230 for the tournament. Kangs three-day score is 10-over 226. Scores (after 54 holes): 212 Arjun Atwal ( 71+72+69); 213 Amritinder Singh (71+71+71); 214 Basad Ali (74+70+70), Arjun Singh (73+72+69); 215 Shiv Prakash (71+72+72), Gaurav Ghei (73+71+71); 216 Vijay Kumar ( 70+70+76), Mukesh Kumar (71+72+73); 219 Feroz Ali (72+71+76). Sanjay Kumar (70+75+74), Shiv Shankar Prasad Chowrasia (74+75+70); 220 Rohtas Singh (73+72+75), Digvijay Singh ( 73+73+74). Amateurs: 226
Harjinder Kang ( 77+76+73); 230 Sandy Lehal (

Pele celebrates anniversary
of Rio de Janeiro, Nov 19 (AFP) Pele today celebrated the 30th anniversary of his 1000th goal in football, saying he hoped one day to see his three-year-old son Joshua become a striker. Speaking to the Brazilian media from Austria, where he is attending a lavish awards ceremony to honour the greatest sportsmen of the millennium, Pele known in his homeland as O Rey (the king) said he wanted his son to follow in his footsteps unlike his other son Edinho, who became a goalkeeper. I will impose nothing on my sons but fundamentally I would like to see Joshua play football. If he wants to he must dedicate himself to sport and do his best as Edinho did, Pele said. Pele, now 59, also reflected on his landmark strike in the 77th minute of his club sides clash with Vasco da Gama at Rio de Janerios legendary Maracana Stadium on November 19, 1969. With the score level at 1-1 Pele was brought down after a mazy run and took the penalty himself, beating Vascos Argentinean goalkeeper Gato Andrada. After the goal, which proved to be the winner, chaos reigned and Pele was carried on a lap of honour, holding the ball in the air. Eventually the match was completed although no-one cared about the result. Pele said today: It seems just like yesterday that I left the dressing room to take that penalty. My knees were knocking but the ball went in. There is nothing better for strikers than the moment you score. It makes me happy even today. Pele scored 1279 goals in his career a figure unlikely ever to be matched by a player performing at such a high level. Almost universally considered the greatest ever footballer in the worlds most popular sport, Peles goal ensured that 1969 in his homeland became known as the year of Peles 1000th goal while in the rest of the world that year is associated with the first moon landing. Born Edson Arantes do Nascimento on October 23, 1940 in Tres Coracoes, in the Minas Gerais region, Pele started playing for Santos at the age of 14 and scored his first goal in 1956 on September 7. In 1958 he burst on to
the World Cup scene at the age of 17 in Sweden. He
quarterfinal with Wales, a hat-trick in the semifinal win
over France and two brilliant strikes in the 5-2 final
win over Sweden. It was Brazils first World Cup
win. |
Punjab bag title CHANDIGARH, Nov 19 Hosts Punjab and defending champions Madhya Pradesh won the boys and girls titles, respectively, in the 26th National Subjunior Basketball Championship which concluded at Sri Anandpur Sahib indoor stadium today. Punjab boys defeated yesterdays giant killers Rajasthan 58-42 after taking a slender 24-21 lead at the breather. In the girls section, Madhya Pradesh raced to a comfortable 42-33 win over Tamil Nadu after leading 27-14 at the half time. Andhra Pradesh defeated Maharashtra 61-50 to take the third spot in boys section while in the girls section, Maharashtra trounced Kerala 65-35 to take the bronze medal. The Punjab-Rajasthan boys final was played on a fast pace leading to several players committing maximum mandatory five fouls . Rajasthan suffered on this account and had to play the last quarter with only four players on the court. But before the match came to an end, Rajasthan woes increased further when S. Ali had also to be shown the door for committing the fifth personal foul. Punjab, too, were no better as they too were reduced to four players. It was the last quarter that gave the home team the number advantage. Punjab boys scored at will in the last quarter, their hero being Karan whose personal tally stood at 13 of which eight points came in the last quarter. Otherwise, Punjabs hero was their pivot Mandip who top scored with 14 points. B. Singh (14) and Bhagwan (eight) were the main scorers for Rajasthan. Earlier in the semifinals, Rajasthan defeated Maharashtra 32-23 after leading 13-6 at the breather. Punjab, on the other hand, had a tough opponent in Andhra Pradesh. Punjabs triumph was the brainwork of Mandip Singh who alone scored 24 points while Vijendra was top scorer for Andhra with 19 points. At half time Punjab led 32-19. In the girls final, MP players outplayed their opponents in man-to-man marking and in counter attacks to take a comfortable 27-14 lead at the breather. Earlier in the semifinals, Tamil Nadu had beaten Kerala 53-47 after leading 28-22 at the breather. MP girls had defeated Maharashtra 62-26. Mr M.S. Bhullar,
Additional Director-General of Police, Punjab, gave away
prizes to winners in boys section while Mr Rajdeep Singh
Gill, Inspector-General of Police, and president, Punjab
Basketball Association, gave away prizes in the girls

Irina Northern India champ NEW DELHI, Nov 19 Chandigarhs Irina Brar, 16-year-old and 5 ft 8 in, provided many lessons to her redoubtable rivals as she romped home to wear the crown of the 32nd Ladies Northern India Open Amateur Golf Championship at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC) course here today. Displaying her talent, technique and temperament, Irina once again faired one over 73 to stay a comfortable winner at 294 on the final day. While she made her reputation in no uncertain style, experienced and star players marred their ranking. Vandana Agarwal could not extricate herself from a miserable display as she finished runner-up on 307, as many as 13 strokes behind the young champion. Anjali Chopra was third with 315, while veteran Lalitha Balasubramaniam was fourth with 317. It was a shocking display by two former champions, Shruti Khanna and Parnita Garewal. Shruti fired 13 over 85 to get an aggregate of 319, while Parnita, who shot 81, managed an aggregate of 322. Unlike Irina who, in four days, scored six over par 288, Shruti finished 31 over and Parnita 34 over. Both in particular and other leading players were issued a timely warning by the IGU (Ladies section) Champika Syal for playing with greater application and dedication. The course was ideal, weather superb and conditions conducive for competition, said veteran ladies, adding: There was no justification for players with India rankings to play so dismally. Irina showed that she wore a very mature head over her young shoulders. She stroked freely and consistently, chipped and putted like a seasoned campaigner. Undismayed about four bogeys that she got in the first nine, she went on to get three birdies on the back nine to get an aggregate of one over 73. Irinas display throughout the competition was of high class. She showed that she had nerves of steel and she maintained her coolness amidst challenge from senior players. After first days play of 73, I was composed on the next three days as I concentrated to play my natural game, said Irina who was modest in her hour of triumph. I have been taught to take rough with the smooth and I begin every day as new morning, said Irina. Much was expected from Vandana after her first days fantastic score of four under 68. But even on the final day, today, she could not get her act right as she shot seven over 79. She had double-bogeys on the fourth and on the 13th. In the first nine, she had four bogeys. She did not display on three days that she was a player of all-India calibre. Similar were the doings of Shruti and Parnita. Apart from this prestigious Northern India trophy, Irina won many other trophies. After praising the course and organisers, Irina cut the championship cake to the delight of all present. As she got a vociferous applaud, she rightly wore a huge smile on her face, half-hidden under her cap. Final Scores: Irina Brar
