Lanka down fighting Kiwis, enter semis DHAKA, Oct 26 (PTI) Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga hit an unbeaten 90 and pulled out his side from a precarious five for three to a comfortable five-wicket win over New Zealand and a place in the semifinals of the Wills International Cup Cricket Tournament at the Bangabandhu Stadium here tonight. After New Zealand, shot out for 188 in 49.1 overs, had dismissed opener Sanath Jayasuriya (0) off the first ball and sent back Marvan Atapattu (3) and Aravinda De Silva (0) by the fourth over, opener Romesh Kaluwitharana and Ranatunga put the Lankans on the victory path with a 127-run fifth-wicket stand. Kaluwitharana (48 off 75 balls) was run out in the 30th over when the islanders score read 132, but the skipper held on to take Sri Lanka to 191 for five with 8.3 overs to spare. Upul Chandana, who came on after Roshan Mahanama (7) departed, remained unbeaten on 22. Earlier, New Zealand wicketkeeper Adam Parore (54) stood alone amidst ruins as Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan ripped through the Kiwi batting to restrict them to a modest 188 in 49.5 overs. Only Parore and Craig McMillan (26) offered some resistance with the keeper making the most of a life at four to compile his 13th one-day fifty off 87 balls and a 60-run fourth wicket partnership with McMillan. McMillan was run out trying to snatch a single while Parore went out caught by Chandana off Kumara Dharmasena. Muralitharan got Bell stumped, clean bowled Alex Tait and had Daniel Vettori caught behind to finish with 3 for 31. Sri Lanka will meet South Africa, winners over England yesterday, in the semifinal on Friday. Chasing a modest New Zealand total, Sri Lanka started disastrously as Kiwi paceman Simon Doull struck in the very first ball of the innings sending Jayasuriya packing caught behind by Parore. Jayasuriya was forced to edge behind Doulls outswinger. Doull claimed his next victim when Atapattu (3) was dismissed in similar fashion flicking a widish delivery. The islanders were reeling at three for five in the fourth over after Geoff Allott removed veteran Aravinda De Silva for duck. De Silva was beaten by Allott and Nathan Astle took a fine catch at second slip. With De Silvas departure, the World Cup champions suddenly were in dire straits when Ranatunga joined opener Kaluwitharana to salvage the innings. The two kept the scoreboard ticking with quick ones and twos, scoring well above the asking rate of 3.78 runs per over. Ranatunga was specially severe on Vettori and Paul Wiseman, who conceded 21 runs off four overs. Once Ranatunga and Kaluwitharana were settled, the match slipped away from New Zealand. The Kiwis got a breakthrough when Kaluwitharana, who partnered his captain with a brave 48 runs, was run out in the 30th over with score on 132. The Lankans lost recalled Mahanama when he skied a Wiseman delivery to Allott. But by then Lanka had 150 on the board with more than 15 overs remaining and five wickets in hand. Ranatunga played a captain's knock and Chandana gave him good support with a quickfire 22. New Zealand handed Sri Lanka an easy victory conceding four runs by over-throw after Ranatunga had taken a single with three runs needed for victory. NEW ZEALAND: SRI LANKA: |
Karachi Test drawn; Aussies win series KARACHI, Oct 26 (Reuters) Australia won their first series in Pakistan for 39 years today when the third and final Test ended in a draw enlivened by an unbeaten century from Ijaz Ahmed. Pakistan, set a 419-run victory target after Australia scored 390 in their second innings, finished on 262 for five after being reduced to 78 for four in the first session. Australia won the first Test by an innings and 99 runs in Rawalpindi and drew the second in Peshawar. Ijaz Ahmed stroked a delightful 120 while local hero Moin Khan played yet another rescue innings of 75 to deny Australia their first win in Karachi in eight Tests. It was Australias first series win in Pakistan since Richie Benauds men beat Fazal Mahmoods team 2-0 in 1959-60. It was also Australias first series victory in the sub-continent since Bill Lawry led Australia to a 3-1 win over Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudis India in 1969-70. Pakistans 44-year and 32-Test unbeaten record at the National Stadium was put under severe threat when Colin Miller the seamer-cum-spinner, captured three wickets in 22 balls to reduce Pakistan to 35 for three in the first 60 minutes of play today. Pakistan plunged into deeper trouble when Yousuf Yohannas dismissal left Pakistan on 75 for four. However, a 153-run fifth wicket partnership between Ijaz Ahmad and Moin Khan saved the match for Pakistan. Australia (1st

PCB chief denies match-fixing charges LAHORE, Oct 26 (ANI) Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Khalid Mahmood has refuted all charges of match-fixing against certain players. Appearing before the match-fixing probe commission on Saturday, consisting of Justice Malik Muhammad Qayyum, the PCB chairman said that he had been associated with cricket in different capacities for the past 25 years and he did not have any personal knowledge about match-fixing. Mahmood claimed that the issue was being blown out of proportion by the people within and outside the country for vested interests. He said that a pattern had emerged regarding the timing when the allegations were made against the team. Last time, he said, the issue was raised in 1996 before the World Cup and this time again it was raised when the World Cup of 1999 was approaching. He said that it was a ploy to demoralise the Pakistani team, adding that some foreign teams lacked sportsman spirit and indulged in "sledging" to win matches. Within the country, Mahmood claimed that the local media was behaving irresponsibly and benefiting from ineffective libel laws and lack of a system of self accountability. Mahmood said that he was the first person to have raised the issue in Pakistan and he formed a probe committee. He said that he wanted the issue to be resolved for ever and that no innocent person should be slandered. Regarding a one-day match in England in 1992 which was said to have been fixed, the PCB chairman said that it was played on a dead wicket. He said that the match was not fixed. |
Team should not drop guard: Gaekwad DHAKA, Oct 26 (UNI) Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin today said there were no problems with his team composition though he would have liked off spinner Harbhajan Singh with him, now under the shadow of alleged throwing action, for the Wills International Cup. He said the pitch is of different nature now in the sense that it is crusty and slower while when they heaped the biggest total early this year it was seaming. So far both the matches in this event has indicated that the slow bowlers can put some leash on the batsmen though runs are aplenty and chasing a target will be not so difficult. He said in this context he would have preferred Harbhajan who was almost established. On the other hand, Nikhil Chopra could grab this chance. It was obvious that Anil Kumble and Sunil Joshi both will have a long ball here. Both the captain and coach Anshuman Gaekwad must have watched South African captain Hansie Cronje sweeping the pitch with his gloves time to time in yesterdays match. Azharuddin agreed that Australians were a tough bunch of cricketers out to prove their superiority rather aggressively but said every team in a knock-out event is tough. In a do-or-die system a team playing better only will have luck on its side, he added. Coach Anshuman Gaekwad was sure that Harbhajans unfortunate exclusion will not affect teams morale. Such incidents have nothing to do with teams mental make-up, he said. The team has not given any thought to the proposed introduction of tie-breakers in case the match is rained off. "At the moment I will be happy if my bowlers hit the stumps in a regular match", he quipped. He agreed that in the short camp arranged at Delhi after the Zimbabwe Test debacle his team had gone to the basics but added that it will require a longer camp. Gaekwad said the team should not drop its guard for a moment. He referred to the loss to Kenya in Coca Cola match at home last summer as a case in point. |
Atherton hits back at Lillee PERTH, Oct 26 (AFP) Former England cricket captain Mike Atherton yesterday hit back at suggestions by former Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee he had blundered by admitting he still lived in fear of Australias current pace champion Glenn McGrath. "You come to expect this of the Australian media," said Atherton, referring to Lillees claims in a newspaper column here that England had put their cards on the table in relation to McGrath and leg-spinner Shane Warne even before the first match of the tour. Lillee wrote Athertons admission in England he still feared McGrath, who trapped him six times in the last Ashes series, and the tourists decision to call on former Test leg-spin bowler Peter Philpott to advise their batsmen how to play Warne, were "two giant steps backward". Atherton said the Australian media tried to belittle the opposition and build up the home side. "And thats a natural thing," he said. "The realities are we have just come off the back of a testing summer against South Africas Allan Donald and Shaun Pollock, who are as good as anybody around. "McGrath is obviously a good bowler. But, against the South African pace, Mark Butcher and I managed to play pretty well. We can look forward with confidence to what lies ahead on this tour. Atherton, 30, a right-handed opener, was Englands most productive batsman against South Africa, hitting 493 runs at an average of 54.77 in the five Tests as England won the series 2-1. Butcher played in three Tests, opening with Atherton and making 338 runs at 56.33. Without the burden of captaincy after he had led his country in a record-breaking 52 Tests at the helm over four years, Atherton found some of the best form of his nine-year, 84-test career. "Mark Taylor (Australian skipper) will tell you that as the captain, over a period you can forget to think about your own game, because you are so busy thinking of other things. "Being able to spend more time on my own game certainly paid off last summer. "And I have adjusted comfortably to no longer being in charge. The other lads have adjusted pretty well to me too. There is mutual respect between myself and the other players. "You look to forge a different role for yourself in the team. For me now, that is as a senior player passing on a bit of advice to younger players. "Stewy (new captain Alec Stewart) will occasionally ask me for advice, but I am a firm believer in leaving the guy who captains the side, and if he wants advice, he will come to me. I dont want to push myself on him." Atherton, afflicted with further back trouble at the end of the northern summer, missed Englands humiliating 10-wicket drubbing by Sri Lanka in a one-off Test at the Oval. "But I am in much better physical condition now, ready for this special tour in which a few of us who have played against Australia before, without much success, want to put that right," he said. |
Andre Agassi, Pierce lift titles OSTRAVA, Oct 26 (Reuters) World number six Andre Agassi was forced to three tough sets by unseeded Slovak Jan Kroslak yesterday before emerging with a 6-2 3-6 6-3 victory for the Czech Indoor title. The 24-year-old Slovak qualifier, ranked 153rd, made Agassi work hard for most games, often frustrating the American with consistent serve-and-volleying in front of a supportive crowd. But Agassis trademark intensity, which has led him back into the world top 10 this year from as low as 140th, carried him to the decisive service break in the eighth game of the third set as he pocketed the $ 137,000 winners cheque. The Czech success locked up a spot for Agassi in the prestigious eight-man draw for the year-ending ATP World Championship in Hanover later this year. It was Agassis fifth title in eight final appearances this year and his first in three ATP finals in October. Kroslak, whose only tournament successes were at minor stops in China and Israel in 1995 and 1997, said his achievements this week, which included victories over Goran Ivanisevic and Andre Medvedev, were his best ever. Agassi, playing his familiar aggressive style, took his first break early to go up 2-1 in what most thought would be a quick match. But Kroslak saved nine break points in an entertaining 15-minute fifth game of the first set. The Slovak finally lost the game to fall behind 4-1 but convinced the crowd he could compete with the American. Kroslak responded in the second set by breaking Agassi in the second game as he built a 5-1 lead. MOSCOW (AP): Mary Pierce upset Monica Seles 6-6 (7-2), 6-3 at the million dollars Kremlin Cup, winning her third tour title of the year. Seles, who had beaten Pierce five times in the last six matches, could not keep up with her opponents hard hitting serves and fierce cross-court baseline short on the supreme carpet surface. Second-seeded Seles came out strong, breaking Pierce in the second game. But the French woman, down 0-3, broke back in the fifth on a Seles unforced error. The two then traded hard-hitting beseline shots that just caught the corners, going to a tiebreaker, where Pierces serves were too much for Seles. The American hit more shots into the net after mostly error-free play over the rest of the tournament, and Pierce wrapped up the set after jumping ahead 6-1. The second set saw more of Pierces hard hitting, and Seles, ranked sixth on the WTA Tour, began looking tired halfway through. She lost serve to Pierce in the sixth game, but still managed to fend off match point in the next. The one break was all Pierce needed. She held on for the 6-3 win, hammering an ace past the 24-year-old Seles and keeping her to no points in the last game. Pierce, ranked no 11 on the WTA tour, did not have an easy road to the final. She upset top-seed Venus Williams in the semifinal, coming back from a set down, and crawled back from a 2-5 deficit to win 7-5 against Magui Serna last Friday. Pierce will return to the top eight with the win, for which she gets 260 points and a prize money of $ 165,000. It was her third title of the year, after wins to the Paris Indoors and at Amelia Island. Corretja triumphs LYON: Alex Corretja became the first Spaniard to win a mens indoor tournament in 22 years when he beat German Tommy Haas in the $ 750,000 Lyon Grand Prix final yesterday. The French Open runner-up won 2-6 7-6 6-1 and qualified for next months ATP Tour World Championship in Hannover, Germany. World number seven Corretja emulated compatriot Manuel Orantes, the last Spaniard to achieve an indoor triumph. He took the 1976 masters in Houston, Texas. "I will never forget the week I had here. I had lost a final in France this year, in Paris, and this makes it even more special," said Corretja. It was by no means an easy win for Corretja. Haas led 6-2 3-1 and appeared on course for victory when the Spaniard finally reacted. He broke back in the fifth game of the second set and each player held serve until the tiebreak. Corretja had to save one match point and forced a deciding set by an 8-6 margin when the German hit a forehand wide. It was the end for Haas, who lost his serve and was permitted only one more game. "I promise you Ill be back to win this tournament at last," said Haas, who also lost last years final, to Frenchman Fabrice Santoro. |
Anand maintains lead TILBURG, Oct 26 (PTI) Indias Vishwanathan Anand was held to a quick 21-move draw by Jeron Piket of the Netherlands in the third round of the Tilburg International Grandmasters Chess Tournament here. Anand still leads the 12-man field with 2.5 points after wins over Joel Lautier of France and Russian world number three Vladimir Kramnik in the first and second rounds, followed by Englishman Michael Adams and V. Topalov of Bulgaria on two points. Playing with black pieces for the first time in the tournament, Anand adopted the semi-slav defence against Piket. The Dutchman, bouncing back from his loss against Peter Svidler in the previous round, tried to trap a wary Anand in his 19th move. After 21 moves, Anand offered a draw when no result was possible. The highlight of the third round was a fine win by Kramnik, who crushed Lautier in just 24 moves after a queens gambit declined start. Errors by Lautier in the middle game saw his defence being torn apart by the Russian for a quick win. Svidler, a winner in the second round, crashed to defeat at the hands of Topalov after a Spanish opening. Veteran Swiss star Viktor Korchnoi went down to L Van Wely while Vadim Zviaginsev, seen as an easy opponent, pulled off his third draw, this time against Adams in 32 moves. Peter Leko and Mathew Sadler also drew their game, in 34 moves. Results: J. Piket (Neth) 1

KSCA to start academy: Patel BANGALORE, Oct 26 (UNI) The newly installed office bearers of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) will probe and bring to light the alleged misdeeds and misappropriations of their predecessors while focussing on starting a new cricket academy and streamlining the league cricket, KSCA new secretary and former Test star Brijesh Patel said here yesterday. Mr Patel said the office-bearers would definitely look into the alleged misappropriations by the predecessors in the cash-rich association and place them before the annual general body meeting (AGM). Asked whether the new administration would be seeking the assistance of any specialised agency to probe into the financial mismanagement, 46-year-old Patel replied in the negative. "We will do it ourselves and place the facts before the AGM. We need time to bring to light the misappropriations if any," he said indicating that they would not be adopting a vindictive attitude. In the elections held on October 17, Patel had handed out a thumping defeat to Nagaraj winning by a margin of over 120 votes. The elections also created a record in 64-year history of the association with all 24 posts witnessing a contest for the first time. Despite running his own academy, Patel said he was for implementing the idea of the previous administration regarding launching of an academy by the association. We will definitely implement it. If everything goes well it should start functioning by Christmas. There will be no clash of interest on the issue," he said. I know that KSCA alone cannot handle the demand. Some would definitely go to other academies, which sprung up as the KSCA did not take the initiative for long despite there being a demand. The academy would be restricted to boys under-16," he said. The academy would be functioning throughout the year and former international cricketers like G.R. Viswanath, EAS Prasanna S.M.H. Kirmani, Sudhakar Rao and Roger Binny would be involved in the academy. He personally favoured that off spinner Prasanna take charge of it. Former Kerala medium pacer V. Hariharan would also be involved in the academy, he added. Stating that the new administration would need at least six months to set right the mess left by the predecessors, Patel, said they would focus on streamlining the league cricket in different zones. "We want to complete the league first." College and school tournaments would be introduced as that was a very important age group. All zones would be asked to field a school team for the Kellog's tournament, which has been confined to city institutions. Also, he proposed to have coaching centres in each of the six zones to improve the game. Leading local players would be involved in the coaching centres. "All efforts would be made to tap the talent available in abundance in rural areas." Mr Patel, who was a very successful batsman in domestic cricket but did not click at the international level, said he wanted to give back something to the cricket. The best way was to enter the administration and improve the game in the state. The new administration was already on the job for finding sponsors for the local leagues. The response had been encouraging, he claimed. On toning up the administration, he had a dig at the previous set up. Without taking names he said that in the earlier set up the power was centralised with some people. "I will decentralise the whole administration and also make the members accountable. Each member would be assigned specific jobs and they would have to execute them." |

Mohun Bagan sail into last four NEW DELHI, Oct 26 (UNI) Last years runners-up Mohun Bagan moved into the semifinals eliminating defending champions FC Kochin whom they held to a 1-1 draw in the pool-A quarterfinal league match of the Durand Cup Football Tournament here today. FC Kochin took the lead in the 67th minute when Noel Wilson scored off a penalty kick (1-0). The penalty was awarded when Abu Jomo was felled by goalkeeper Dinesh in the box. The lead lasted barely four minutes as Mohun Bagan also earned a penalty when Chima Okerie was tripped by defender Prabhjot. Chima took the spot kick to restore parity (1-1). Earlier Air India also managed a 1-1 draw with Vasco, Goa to make it to the last four grade by topping pool-A with five points. Vasco Goa, who dominated the proceedings surged ahead in the 85th minute through substitute Caetane Pinho, but this lead did not last long as Air India managed the equaliser in the 87th minute through Henry Picardo. Mohun Bagan finished second with four points. FC Kochin ended their assignments with three points and Vasco Club with two points. Kochin were strengthened with the return of five India junior players, defenders Prabhjot Singh, Mahesh Gawoli and forwards Mir Farooq Hyder, Noel Wilson, and Rockey Barreto who joined the team for this crucial encounter after coming back from Thailand where they had gone to represent the country in the Asian Championship (U-19). Kochin should have won this encounter easily, but their forwards missed several easy chances. The defending champions played to a plan with A S Firoze and Mahesh Gawoli marking the veteran Bagan striker Chima Okerie. The Nigerian forward was totally ineffective in the first half. Kochin had more share of the ball and kept the pressure on the rival defence most of the time. But it was Bagan which opened the game on an offensive note as in the third minute Yonnan Basim made a solo effort but could not beat goalkeeper Ali Abubackler from close range. |
