All pensioners to be on par
Tribune News Service

NEW DELHI, Oct 26 — The Union Cabinet today decided to raise the pension of all those Central Government employees who retired prior to January 1, 1996, on par with those who retired after that date. The old pensioners will now get full benefit of the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission.

The Cabinet proposed to step up the pension to 50 per cent of the minimum of the revised pay of the post held and family pension to 30 per cent of the minimum of the revised pay of the post held subject to the condition that in case of pension the persons should have served for the full term of qualifying service, which is 33 years.

Wherever this falls short of the qualifying service, this would be correspondingly reduced. This principle would be made applicable to all pensioners who have retired.

According to the official spokesman, this measure would benefit the pensioners and family pensioners who were getting less than 50 per cent and 30 per cent of the minimum pay in the revised scale and pension and family pension. This would narrow down the difference in pension and family pension between pre-January 1, 1996 and post-January 1, 1996 pensioners and family pensioners, respectively.back
