Karnataka in driver's seat BANGALORE, Oct 4 (PTI) Karnataka gained a winning first innings lead after their spinner Sunil Joshi took five wickets to restrict Rest of India to 221 in their first innings on the fourth and penultimate day of the Irani Trophy cricket match here today. Karnataka, in their second innings, were 200 for four at close to take a net lead of 305 runs, thanks to a fine 87 from Vijay R. Bharadwaj. After two early wickets, Bharadwaj entertained the small Sunday crowd during his 288 minutes stay with some well-timed shots, which included three sixers and four boundaries. Bharadwaj in the company of Girish Rao added useful 66 runs for the third wicket and caused more worry to the Rest with the fourth wicket partnership between him and A. Vijay. Both batsmen had a feast and made 81 runs together, but Bharadwaj slowed down the pace and looked nervous soon after reaching the 80s. He went to cut a ball that was leaving him around the off-stump only to be caught by Rest captain V.V.S. Laxman at first slip off Nikhil Chopra. Karnataka lost two early wickets. First innings centurian Sujith Somasundar (25) was caught at covers by Sharath off Rajesh Pawar. Somasundar struck four brilliant boundaries. Arun Kumar faced just 18 balls to make four runs before being caught at mid wicket by Nikhil Chopra off Paras Mhambrey. Earlier, Rest of India managed to add 19 runs to their overnight score of 202 for seven. Nikhil Chopra, the lone rest batsman to cross the half-century mark, added 10 runs today before he was run out, trying for a second run after the ball went to the mid-wicket region. Anand Katti picked the ball and threw it to keeper Siraguppi, who made no mistake. Joshi had an impressive analysis of 3.5-1-8-2 for the day and eventually became the tenth left-arm bowler to pick up five wickets in the 36 Irani Trophy encounters. There have been 31 instances when bowlers have taken five wickets. Rest of Indias last three wickets fell in the first 40 minutes of the morning session. Joshi, Dodda Ganesh and R. Bharadwaj were the successful bowlers for the hosts. At close, Karnataka batsmen A Vijay on 46 and Sunil Joshi (8), who came at the fall of Bharadwajs wicket, were at the crease. Test discard L. Sivaramakrishan bowled eight overs in two spells, changing ends but was punished with 36 runs. His very first over cost him 11 runs after Bharadwaj hoisted him for a massive six and struck a neat four. Karnataka (Ist

Aussies on brink of victory RAWALPINDI, Oct 4 (Reuters) Australia were within one wicket of winning their first Test in Pakistan for 39 years when bad light ended play early on the fourth day of the first Test today. Barring continued bad weather, victory seems certain tomorrow after a day marked by Australian wicketkeeper Ian Healy setting a new world record of 356 dismissals in Tests. Pakistan were 137 for nine in their second innings at the close, still 107 behind the visitors, after some indifferent batting and steady, controlled Australian bowling. Pakistan scored 269 in their first innings while Australia amassed 513. But torrential downpours and Pakistans captain Salim Malik got in the way of Australia having an unscheduled rest day on Monday. Malik was unbeaten on 48 having struck six fours in 19 minutes. The last time Australia won a Test series or match here was in 1959-60 when Richie Benauds team beat Pakistan 2-0 in a three-match series. Healys record apart, the highlight was the bowling of leg spinner Stuart MacGill who finished with 4-42, to go with his 5-66 in the first innings, after Glenn McGrath and Damien Fleming had dented Pakistans batting. MacGill was among a knot of Australian players to congratulate Healy, in his 104th test, the moment Akram edged a catch to become his record victim. Marsh claimed 355 victims in 96 Tests. "Half the team had forgotten about it but suddenly they realised that I had done it," he said. Scoreboard Ian Healy breaks world record RAWALPINDI, Oct 4 (Reuters) Australias Ian Healy recorded the highest number of dismissals for a wicketkeeper in Test cricket today when Pakistans Wasim Akram became his 356th victim. Healy caught Akram off Colin Miller as Pakistan struggled to stave off an innings defeat at the Pindi ground. He equalled Rodney Marshs previous record of 355 victims when he caught Mohammad Wasim in Pakistans first innings. As soon as the ball was in his gloves he jumped for joy and was clearly overcome as his colleagues surrounded him with their congratulations. When rain and bad light then stopped play, Healy had time to reflect on his achievement. "It was like being on a ducker or 99 as I waited for the record victim," he said. "On the first day, when Pakistan batted, it was a bit difficult to keep but today was better because victory was so close." "It was pleasing as well because it was a good catch," added Healy, whose chances of adding more to his tally on today were dented by a torrential downpour and gloomy skies." "I would have liked it to happen on the first day when I equalled the record. Two days however allowed me to get my head together." |
Innings win for India HARARE, Oct 4 (PTI) Leg spinner Anil Kumble underlined his fine form with a 10-wicket haul to lead India to an innings and 71 runs victory over Zimbabwe Board Presidents XI in the three-day cricket match here today. Trailing by 244 runs in the first innings after India had declared at 400 for five yesterday, the Board Presidents XI were bundled out for 173, within 57 minutes on the third and final day today. Kumble (5-35) was the wrecker-in-chief in the Presidents XI first score of 156 all out. Resuming on 106 for 5, the hosts succumbed to the Indian spinners Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh, who claimed nine wickets between themselves in the second essay. Kumble again proved the nemesis of the home side, taking five wickets for 18 runs in his 13.5 overs. It was an unforgettable match for Kumble who besides match figures of 10 for 52, also scored an unbeaten 100 in the Indian innings. Harbhajan, who claimed 4 for 60 in the hosts second innings, returned a fine 6 for 98. Harbhajan struck in his very first over in the morning claiming D. Viljoen leg before for 21, the wicket falling after addition of only one run to the overnight score. Bryan Strang, the next man in, decided that there was no point in hanging around the wicket and started swinging his bat. He took good advantage of the inside field and smashed Harbhajan Singh for a couple of sixes and a few fours. Strang fell to Kumble after making a quickfire 48 off 39 balls which included two sixes and five fours. He contributed 48 off the 53 runs scored for the seventh wicket with Craig Gurr (17 n.o). Kumble picked up two wickets in a single over to make the defeat imminent for the Board Presidents XI. He first got Raymond Price (1) caught at silly point by Rahul Dravid and then claimed Angus McKay (0), trapping him in front of the wicket. Presidents XI were 168 for nine at this stage and the end came soon as Kumble trapped last man Everton Matabandzo (0) in his next over to clinch a fine win for the India going into the one-off Test starting later in the week. English Channel swimmer faces hardship AGARTALA, Oct 4 (PTI) Despite bringing laurels for Tripura by crossing the English Channel in his maiden attempt, lady luck has not yet smiled on 25-year old Ganesh Naha. Naha, who had justifiably earned the sobriquet Tripuras pride after cruising 36 km and 195 metre of the channel in 15 hours and 17 minutes, is worried over mounting loans he had not been able to repay so far. Naha and his lady coach Ratanmani Roychoudhury had only managed to collect a sum of Rs 2 lakh though they had to spend about Rs 6 lakh, by taking financial help from the public and mortgaging Ratanmanis gold. "Only strong determination had helped me to swim through the rough and choppy sea waters and nobody in my home state ever imagined that I would be successful in my mission," Naha the second Indian after Kurtali Swaran of Tamil Nadu to cross the Channel in first attempt explained in an interview to PTI here yesterday. "I knew if I could not cross the channel nobody would help me financially for coming to England again," he said, a bit emotionally. On his unforgettable experience during the swimming, Naha said he would have been able to notch up a new world record in reaching the destination Cape Grisnez in nine hours had he not been pushed by an unpredictable strong wave 20 km back. Narrating the way the duo went on procuring funds to meet Nahas expenses, Ratanmani said when co-passengers in a train from Howrah to Delhi came to know about the mission, they collected Rs 7,000 and handed it over to them as financial help. The Department of Sports of the Union Government, state government and the ONGC had also given Rs 1.5 lakh, Rs 50,000 and Rs 35,000 respectively. Help had also come from unexpected quarters, from local people, to the tune of Rs 15,500. However all this proved to be inadequate in the long run. Naha, who had no previous experience of swimming in salt waters with high tides said he had to adjust himself to the circumstances as quick as possible knowing that he could not afford to spend money to stay for a longer duration of practice in England. After his glorious achievement, Naha has been invited to take part in the 45-km swimming competition in Greece to be held in June 99 but faces monetary problem in arranging the wherewithal for expenditure and practice during his stay. Though he needed some basic infrastructure for swimming practices, Naha a junior physical instructor in the state Sports Department said he had been posted in a remote hilly area, which did not have a pond to swim, at Srinagar in south Tripura district in 1997. In the 19-km Murshidabad swimming competition on river Ganga he had secured the second place in 1991, fifth spot in 1992 and first place in 1995.Naha had also secured positions in the 30-km national long distance swimming competition at Katwa in West Bengals Burdwan district since 1991. Naha, who was on deputation to Agartala for coaching, would have to go back to Srinagar on October 7 after expiry of his term, his coach said. "How can he practice unless the state government extends his deputation period or transfer him to the state capital," she pointed out." When asked about the persons he admired, Naha said he was inspired by Kurtali Swaran of Tamil Nadu and Masudoor Rahman of West Bengal who had crossed the English Channel earlier. |
Rios beats Agassi for title MUNICH, Oct 4 (Reuters) Chiles Marcelo Rios outlasted Andre Agassi over five sets to win the Grand Slam Cup and prize money of $ 1.3 million today. Rios, the world number three, was made to work for just under three hours before winning 6-4, 2-6, 7-6, 5-7, 6-3 when Agassi double-faulted on the Chileans second match point. The American former world number one, who received a wild card for the tournament for the best performers in the years four Grand Slams, appeared short of energy after yesterdays five-set semifinal thriller against Slovakias Karol Kucera. He won then after saving four match points but the effort appeared to exact a toll and he had to settle for the runner-up prize of$ 650,000. Rios, the world number three who qualified thanks to his final appearance at the Australian Open, received treatment for back pain after losing his serve to go 3-2 down in the first set. He then broke Agassi to level the set, which he eventually won in 36 minutes on a forehand pass. Agassi fought back in the second set, breaking his opponent straightaway and again in the seventh game, when Rios hit a backhand long. Both players held serve in a tense third set and a tie break was needed, which Rios took 7-1. The fourth set was also close and Rios dropped serve at the worst possible moment by netting a backhand. The telling break in the decisive set came in the fifth game, in which Agassi hit a backhand wide to give Rios a 3-2 lead and the Chilean stayed in command. Kuerten wins Kuerten, the 1997 Roland Garros champion, recovered from a nervous start to run out a comfortable winner in two hours four minutes and earn victory over the man who took his French title earlier this year. Mallorca-born Moya, cheered on by a home crowd of 8,000, had begun the match in stunning style, running his opponent around the court to take a 3-0 lead. Moya had three break point chances to make that 4-0 and take a stranglehold on the set but a series of big serves from Kuerten kept him in tough. The Brazilian then launched his first mini-comeback, breaking back in game eight and holding his own serve comfortably when under pressure at 5-4 and 6-5 down. |
PSB, Punjab cops enter final CHANDIGARH, Oct 4 On a cool, sombre evening as hundreds of mourners bade a tearful adieu to the doyen of Indian banking, Dr Inderjit Singh, Punjab and Sind Bank, which he founded decades ago, in a unique tribute raised visions of another memorable title win by a storming into the final of the 28th All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Sector 42 hockey stadium here today. In the final to be played tomorrow, they will meet Punjab Police who carved out a sensational 6-3 victory over star-studded Air-India in the first semifinal earlier today. The mood was downcast in the PSB camp as players and spectators alike stood in silence as a mark of respect to the departed soul. However, the team cast aside the gloominess to script a 3-1 victory over Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited to move into the final of the grade 'A' tournament. However, the day's honours were reserved for Punjab Police who rallied superbly to put down stubborn resistance from Air-India, before emerging triumphant by an unexpected 6-3 margin. It was indeed a marvellous fightback by the Punjab cops, who after being in arrears twice, overcame the challenge through sheer mental toughness. Centre-forward Gursewak Singh was the hero of the Punjab Police victory, scoring three of the six goals. Olympian Baljit Singh Dhillon scored two while the brother Daljit contributed one. Initially, Punjab Police were at the receiving end and Air-India's promising forward Gaganajit provided the first shock, deflecting a cross from the left by Edward Aranna into the cage in eighth minute. Two minutes later, Gaganajit again took a hit on the run from a difficult angle making it 2-0. Thereafter, Punjab Police retaliated with counter attacks and wiped out the deficit within a span of two minutes. First it was Daljit who provided the finishing touches to a feeble attempt by Gursewak in the 11th minute off a penalty corner and then his brother Baljit sounded the boards once again with a solo effort (2-2). In the second half, Air-India were again on top when Olympian Anil Aldrin shot home following a penalty corner (3-2). Punjab Police were quick to retaliate and outside-right Baljit Singh Dhillon weaved his way into the D before putting Gursewak in possession. Gursewak was a picture of confidence as he calmly put the ball in (3-3). The Air-India goal had a lucky escape in the 44th minute, when off a through pass by Baljit Dhillon, Baljit Bhullar nearly scored. The ball was about to roll into the goalmouth but skipper Surinder Kundu of Air-India effected a goal-line save. Finally in the 58th minute, Punjab Police forged ahead through a gem of an effort by Olympian Baljit Dhillon. Outpacing a couple of defenders with a terrific run down the middle, Baljit unleashed a powerful hit to which Air-India custodian Sudhir Kumar had no answer (4-3). With hardly four minutes remaining for the final hooter, Gursewak put the issue beyond doubt with two successive strikes with the move having been initiated by Baljit Dhillon (6-3). |
BSF annex soccer title NABHA, Oct 4 Attack was the mantra the BSF frontline chanted right from the kick off and this bore fruit as the Jalandhar securitymen downed a sketchy Switchgear, Phagwara, 3-1 to annex the title in the 23rd All-India Gurdarshan Football Tournament played here today. The vociferous crowd at the Ripudaman College grounds, the traditional home to the tournament for the last 23 years, did their bit to lift the sagging spirits of the Phagwara outfit, but what undid them was their defence which seemed to be as fragile as a flickering candle at the end of a tunnel as the BSF forwards Jaswant Singh Negi and Prasanta Dass made repeated forays, most of which ended due to their own indiscretion and indecisiveness rather than the Phagwara defence putting up anything worthwhile. Even before the dust had settled after the kick off, Prasant Dass stunned the crowd with a neat volley placement to the right of the Phagwara custodian Surinder Pal who seemed to be rooted to the ground as BSF forged ahead (1-0). But this advantage was soon neutralised by an equally stunning effort by Switchgear forward Sameer Kumar, whose 30 yards pile driver brooked no resistance from the BSF goalkeeper (1-1). Thereafter the exchanges were on an even keel with the attack on either side coming up with anything innovative so as to overpower the other team. The sluggish play in this period made the title match look a little stale, as Phagwara skipper Vijay Kumar, fed by Sameer Kumar, fluffed a sitter in front of an open goalmouth which as it turned out was the only clear chance which came the Switchgear way in the first half. Switchgear, a scratch combination of students of Guru Nanak College, Phagwara, found the going too tough against BSF who had a fair sprinkling of national and international stars. Close to half time, the securitymen surged ahead when frontliner B.S. Negi showed a clear pair of heals to his marksman to put his team a goal ahead (2-1). In the second half play was confined to the second half with BSF on the defensive, trying to maintain the solitary goal lead. Late into the second half the Phagwara duo of Deepak and Vijay Kumar, who manned the defence, wilted under sustained pressure and in the 87th minute BSF were awarded a penalty after a fine move by Prasanta Dass and Gaurango Pal culminated. In a defender touching the ball with his hand, medio Jaswant Singh slotted the ball in the right side of the netting after barely managing to beat the diving Phagwara custodian Surinder Pal who got the tip of his hand to the ball but let it slip (3-1). This goal firmly sealed the fate of the Phagwara outfit who till today seemed to be on a giant killing spree having beaten RCF, Kapurthala, and favourities PSEB on their way to their maiden entry into the final. The prizes were distributed by the Minister for PWD, Mr Harmail Singh. |
Punjab enter semis; Chandigarh lose CHENNAI, Oct 4 (PTI) Hopes of some close encounters from the knockout stage of the Bank of Baroda 49th Senior Women's National Hockey Championship were belied as the league pattern continued in todays quarterfinal matches too, with goals continuing to rain in spite of the weather being quite sunny. Haryana, Bombay, reigning champions Indian Railways and Punjab moved into the semifinals after their emphatic wins in their respective quarterfinals. The superbly fit Haryana girls toyed with the Uttar Pradesh defence for the full 70 minutes and but for a few heroic saves by custodian Deepa Bhat, the score would have been much bigger than the 10-0 (HT 3-0) margin. The winners never delayed inside the ring and were always sure with their shots taken first time. After Surinder Kaur gave them an early lead, Simranjeet added two quick goals. Soon after restart, UP missed a golden chance when a stroke taken by Moni Sonkar was saved by Haryana keeper Suman. Kiran Bala took over the scoring from there striking three-in-a-row, the last one off a penalty stroke. Rekha Rani made the score 7-0 and Surinder Kaur, Nutan and Gurpreet completed the tally in that order. Haryana had 14 penalty corners (two were converted) to UPs lone one. In the morning quarterfinals, Indian Railways, aiming for their fifth straight success, beat Chandigarh 8-0 (HT 3-0) and will clash in tomorrows semifinal against Punjab, who scored an unexpectedly easy 4-0 win over last year semifinalists Orissa. In the last quarterfinal match, the much talked about Bihar, failed to live up to the expectations and struggled against Bombay. Bombay, who forced six penalty corners in the initial half without success, scored a brilliant goal through Paulina, whose reverse shot flew into the net, seconds before the half-time hooter. Shortly after resumption, Paulina failed to consolidate when she fumbled with a cross by Poonam. Bombay defence held sway thereafter, never allowing the Bihar girls any elbow room. With time ticking out, Bombay made sure of victory when Jyoti scooped in off a penalty corner for the second goal, avenging the defeat by Bihar in the semifinal in New Delhi in the previous edition. They will now meet Haryana in the semifinals tomorrow. |

Punjab shuttlers enter jr finals JAIPUR, Oct 4 (PTI) Defending champion Delhi earned a facile 3-0 win over Himachal Pradesh to storm into the men's final of the North Zone Inter-state Badminton Championship here today. Delhi, which has been the dominant team in the zone, also reached the final in the women's section by thrashing the same opponents 3-0. In the junior section, Punjab was all set to clinch a double as it made into the finals of both the boys and girls' sections by beating Haryana 2-0 and 2-1, respectively. Gehlawat combined with Sunil to beat Deepak Verma and Manoj Awasthi 15-10,15-12 to clinch the tie 3-0 for Delhi. Jalandhar trounce Patiala PATIALA, Oct 4 For the second time in two days the much-flaunted Patiala batting line up sank like the Titanic, without leaving a trace, as Jalandhar inflicted one of the heaviest defeats on the hosts in recent years, winning by a massive margin of an innings and 127 runs in the Katoch Shield cricket tournament played at the Dhruv Pandove stadium here today. The three-day match at no point of time rose to the level of an intense contest as the Patiala batsmen repeated their first innings act and fell like nine pins to be all out for a dismal 107 runs, with Retinder Sodhi being the only batsmen to cross the twenties. Splendid centuries by skipper Vikram Rathore and Harminder Singh, brilliant wicketkeeping by young Ankur Sondhi and the Patiala batsmens' ability of taking the match to the third day, which should be considered to be an achievement of sorts, were the highlights of the semifinal encounter.
