Saeed Anwar's ton rescues Pak RAWALPINDI, Oct 1 (Reuters) An unbeaten 132 by Saeed Anwar lifted Pakistan from a disastrous start to a respectable 253 for eight against Australia on the first day of the first Test today. When bad light stopped
play five overs early, opener Anwar and a valiant Mushtaq
Ahmed had shored up the innings with an unbroken 106-run
stand. It was Anwars first hundred against Australia and his sixth Test century. It included 10 fours and took 265 minutes and 18 balls. At the close, Mushtaq was on 26 garnered over 127 minutes of stubborn resistance. Australias wicketkeeper Ian Healy equalled predecessor Rodney Marshs world record tally of 355 victims when he caught Mohammad Wasim off Fleming, his second catch of the morning session. Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat but collapsed to 50 for four as Glenn McGrath and Damien Fleming bowled with Nagging accuracy. After lunch, leg-spinner Stuart MacGill further dented Pakistan, taking four wickets, three of them in seven balls. Pakistan, who had resumed
after lunch at 78 for four, found themselves at 147 for
eight after MacGills fourth strike. |
India take on Board President's XI today HARARE, Oct 1 (PTI) While continuing to rest their frontline players and Test reserves, as in the third one-day, India will hope to win three-day match against Zimbabwe Board Presidents XI starting here tomorrow to be in the right frame of mind for the one-off Test starting next week. Skipper Mohammed Azharuddin is expected to rest himself along with speedsters Javagal Srinath and Ajit Agarkar, ahead of the Test starting on October 7. But there is little left to experiment among the rest of the tourists and the irony is that the captain of this match, Ajay Jadeja, is unlikely to make it to the Test eleven. Robin Singh, who but for lack of good support from the other end might have clinched the game for India yesterday, will play with the full knowledge that he is unlikely to figure in the line-up for the Test. This gusty all-rounder,
somehow, always makes an impression when it is time to
take leave from the centrestage as he did yesterday and
for all practical purpose, the competitive part of his
role on this tour is already over. Mongia has been asked to fill in the role for sometime now. Lack of an allrounder in the team does not give the team necessary balance and perforce Mongia is asked to go at the top. The Board Presidents XI is an interesting mix of youngsters and seasoned cricketers and those whose performance would be keenly watched are Bryan Strang, Dirk Viljoen, Everton Matambanadzo, Neil Johnson and Craig Wishart, hero of the home teams win in the final one-dayer. The 26-year-old Bryan Strang, a steady medium-pacer who is rated highly for his economy rate, will be looking to make further impression on the selectors and steal a berth over Neil Johnson, rated so high by his captain Alistair Campbell. Strang has already turned out in 13 Tests for Zimbabwe. Dirk Viljoen, young cricketer of the year a couple of seasons ago, and one who has turned out in one test and nine one-dayers, is Zimbabwes hope for a true allrounder for the future. He is a positive batsman with solid strokeplay and is a good left-arm spinner who can bowl both with a bit of pace and loop. His Chinaman is said to be particularly lethal. Matambanadzo is an
attacking bowler who has already turned out in two Tests
and is hopeful of making further impression on the
selectors while Wishart, the middle-order batsman, who
was tried as opener in the final one-dayer and came good,
might be presisted in the same position since Grant
Flower is injured. |
Corretja advances in Mallorca Open PALMA DE MALLORCA (Balearic Islands), Oct 1 (AP) Second-seeded Alex Corretja of Spain beat Slovakias Dominik Hrbaty 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 yesterday in the first round of the Mallorca Open clay-court tournament. Corretja, ranked seventh in the world, advanced to a second-round match today against countryman Sergi Brugera. Also, top-seeded Carlos Moya of Spain will face Slava Dosedel of the Czech Republic. Brazils Gustavo Kuerten, the 1997 French Open winner, and Spains Tomas Carbonell also advanced. Kuerten led Belgiums Johan Van Herck 7-6, 1-0 when Van Herck withdrew because of a wrist injury. Carbonell beat Swedens Magnus Gustafsson 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. TOULOUSE (France): Jeff Tarango, the only US player competing in the $400,000 Toulouse Open, has won his first round match on Wednesday against Switzerlands Ivo Heuberger after losing the first set. The Manhattan Beach, CA, player, who beat Karol Kucera in the recent MFS Pro championships, was firm favourite yesterday to beat Heuberger, but had to come from a set down to win 6-1, 6-4. In the second round, Tarango will meet another Swiss player, Marc Rosset. Rosset pulled off the biggest shock of the tournament so far when he beat Fabrice Santoro of France, the world no. 29, yesterday. Germanys Martin
Sinner recorded his best result of 1998 Wednesday when he
beat hard-hitting Dutchman Paul Haarhuis in straight
sets. Sinner dropped out of the top 100 last spring, while Haarhuis entered the tournament with a no. 64 ranking. There was disappointment for French no. 3 Guillaume Raoux, who lost to Swiss qualifier Roger Federer, 6-2, 6-2. But Frances Jerome Golmard advanced, beating David Prinosil of Germany, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4). MUNICH: Jana Novotna crumbled with victory in sight on Wednesday, wasting a match point before losing in three sets to Switzerlands Patty Schnyder in the first round of the Grand Slam Cup. The Czech, who triumphed at Wimbledon this year but has frequently blown big chances in the past, twice served for the match before Schnyder won 2-6 7-5 7-5. In the mens competition, Andre Agassi whitewashed Frances Cedric Pioline 6-0 6-0 in 37 minutes. It was the shortest match in the history of the tournament. Women are playing for the first time in the Munich event for the best performers in the years four Grand Slams, relied on her serve and volley game to win the first set easily and looked headed for a comfortable victory when she opened up a 5-4 lead in the second. But she double faulted on match point, allowing Schnyder to fight her way back into the match. The third set followed a similiar scenario with Novotna once again leading 5-4 and dropping her serve. In the final game, Novotna saved a match point with a backhand winner but Schnyder soon earned another and saw her tiring opponent hit a backhand wide. "I was tired and
towards the end of the third set, I was getting
cramps," said Novotna, who will turn 30 on Friday. |
Nicol sails into semifinals CAIRO, Oct 1 (AFP) Peter Nicol, the top-seeded Scot, moved smoothly into the semi-finals of the Al-Ahram Squash Championships here last night beating Englishman Mark Chaloner 15-7 15-3 15-5. Chaloners challenge was at its strongest in the second game in which he led 13-11. Perhaps the score of the first game did the Englishman an injustice, but, by the third, Nicol had run him to almost a standstill. Although the margins in these two games were wide, the match took 57 minutes to decide. The Scots victory was crafted, rather than seized. He played with admirable control and varied the pace to keep Chaloner from getting any kind of rhythm. For the first time in the history of squash at this level, two Scots will contest a semifinal. Nicol will today meet his compatriot Martin Heath, the world number 21, who scored a surprisingly easy 15-11 15-11 15-7 win over Australias Byron Davis, ranked seven places above him. The two womens quarter-finals were both damp squibs. Fourth-seeded Sue Wright of England was too ill with gastritis to be able to do justice to her reputation as great fighter and lost 9-5 9-2 10-8 to Leilani Joyce of New Zealand, whom she had beaten less than a fortnight ago in the Commonwealth Games at Kuala Lumpur. Michelle Martin of
Australia beat Englands Suzanne Horner, who retired
with a heel injury early in the third game, after being
outplayed in the first two. |
ACB chief rushes to Pakistan MELBOURNE, Oct 1 (AFP) Australian Cricket Board (ACB) chief executive Malcolm Speed left for Pakistan today to resolve Australias position in the festering bribes investigations. Speed met ACB chairman Denis Rogers here today and brought forward his trip from October 20, following requests for Australian players to give evidence in a bribery inquiry in Pakistan dating back to Australias last tour there in 1994. The Australian team received an official request yesterday for players to appear before Justice Malik Muhammad Qayyum to give evidence into match fixing and bribery allegations. Skipper Mark Taylor and Mark Waugh, who are on tour in Pakistan, have been asked to give evidence, as have injured leg-spinner Shane Warne and retired off-spinner Tim May, both here. "I have written to the commission of inquiry, stating we have received their request and asking if we can meet as early as this weekend to discover a greater understanding of the processes involved in the judicial inquiry," Speed said in an ACB statement today. May, now the Australian
cricketers Association Union president, said this
week he was reluctant to go before the inquiry and said
he was yet to receive a summons from Pakistan. |
Karnataka pile up 233 for 4 BANGALORE, Oct 1 (PTI) Karnataka opener Sujith Somasunders brilliant century helped his team to pile up a decent total of 233 for four against rest of India on the opening day of the five-day Irani Trophy at Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium here today. Sujiths 143 (271b, 359m, 4x4, 3x6) was the highlight of the first days proceedings. Sujith, who was at his best right from the word go was harsh on the spinners. Earlier, Karnataka won the toss and elected to bat. The match started half an hour late due to overnight rains. Another 27 minutes of play was lost before tea due to showers, but was compensated at the fag end of the day. Arun Kumar (12) was the first batsmen to go back to the pavillion when he went for a lofted shot only to be caught by Mahambre at mid on off Robin Singh (junior). Rest of India captain V.V.S. Laxman brought in spin, through L. Sivaramakrishnan in the 10th over replacing Robin (jr) much to the delight of Somasundar. Vijay Bharadwaj, who had a good season, joined Somasundar but was in trouble not able to control his shots. He was out leg before to Robin (jr) with his personal score on 12 and the teams 72. But, Girish Rao and Somasundar prevented any further damage and added 73 runs for the third wicket in 103 minutes off 177 balls. Somasundar, who batted brilliantly despite lack of consistency at the other end, severely punished all three spinners Sivaramakrishnan, Nikhil Chopra and Rajesh Pawar. He hoisted them for three sixes, the last one off Sivaramakrishnan bringing his century. After Rao departed, caught by Mazumdar off Chopra, A. Vijay (batting 20) came in and added 88 runs for the fourth wicket, before Somasundar got out in the last over of the day. Laxmans gamble of bringing in Chopra to bowl the last over paid off, as an impatient Somasundar went for a careless shot, only to find the bowlers safe hands. The day also saw the
introduction of new no ball rule which came into force
from September 1. Mhambrey was the first bowler to be
penalised under the new rule. While there were as many as
19 no balls during the day in a total of 20 extras. |

Northern Railway, Chandigarh XI CHANDIGARH, Oct 1 Title contenders Northern Railway, Delhi, and Chandigarh XI sailed into the quarterfinals of the 28th All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament in contrasting style at the Sector 42 hockey stadium here today. While Northern Railway did not have to exert much against Sikh Regimental Centre, Ramgarh, whom they ousted 4-1, Chandigarh XI had to struggle hard before overpowering Western Railway 3-2 via the tie-breaker after the two teams were on even terms at the end of the stipulated period. Also keeping their hopes alive in the tournament were Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, who prevailed over Bhopal XI 6-5 via sudden death and Punjab and Sind Bank Academy, Jalandhar, who grounded Indian Air Force by a first-half brace. The two teams have now entered the pre-quarterfinals. The Chandigarh XI-Western Railway match was well contested with the two teams going all out to grab the lead. Both had ample opportunities to score but neither achieved success till the final hooter. For Chandigarh XI, Jatinder Kumar, Inderjeet Singh, Navdeep Singh and Surjit Singh displayed fine coordination but a goal eluded them. In the tie-breaker that followed, Manmohan Singh, Jatinder Kumar and Inderjeet Singh were successful with their strokes while for Western Railway only Allen Barla and Deepak Gupta were on target. In fact the Chandigarh XI goalkeeper Baljit Singh emerged as a hero in his team's victory having successfully blocked three of the strokes. Northern Railway, who also qualified for the last eight, were certainly a superior side as compared to SRC. Their attacks were more purposeful with the forwards clicking in unison. After taking some time to settle down, Northern Railway forged ahead in the 17th minute when outside-right Brijneh capitalised on a move by centre-forward AP Singh and Daud Suleman and shot home from a difficult angle (1-0). In the second half, SRC were at the receiving end and outside-right Brijneh, after hoodwinking Jagtar Singh of SRC, beat the goalkeeper with a fine reverse flick (2-0). In the 45th minute, the hard-working Daud Suleman made it 3-0 in the favour of Northern Railway through a solo effort while skipper AP Singh added another goal in the 51st minute to complete the rout. The army outfit managed to salvage some pride by scoring a consolation goal in the last minute when Rajpal found the target off a penalty corner (1-4). Earlier, Punjab and Sind Bank Academy maintaining their winning spree, defeated Indian Air Force by two first half goals. The IAF team missed several scoring chances and ultimately paid the price for wayward hitting. Punjab and Sind Bank Academy, who earlier ousted PSEB, took the lead in the 23rd minute through Prabhdeep while Jugandeep scored another field goal four minutes later to send IAF packing. Air Force were awarded five penalty corners while Punjab and Sind Bank Academy earned three. Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, also made a winning start with a hard-fought 6-5 victory over Bhopal XI. Bhopal XI took the lead in the fifth minute through a field goal scored by Shaid Bag. However, RCF restored parity in the 24th minute when Mariunus Ekka also scored a field goal. With the issue remaining
deadlocked, the tie-breaker rule was applied in which the
two sides were again level after converting three strokes
each. But in sudden death that followed, Sabal Kumar of
RCF was on target while Shaid Noor missed the crucial
stroke much to the dismay of Bhopal XI, who otherwise had
an excellent game. |
Mumbai eves drub Himachal Pradesh CHENNAI, Oct 1 (PTI) Karnataka and Mumbai scored emphatic wins in their crucial pool 'F' matches as the tussle for the knockout phase began hotting up today in the Bank of Baroda 49th Senior Women's National Hockey Championship here today. In the two matches decided in the morning, Karnataka humbled Bundelkhand 14-0 (HT 6-0) and Mumbai did not lag far behind beating Himachal Pradesh 9-1 ( HT 5-0). The teams tally six points each from two victories and the clash between the two tomorrow will decide the qualifier. Mumbai need an outright win, whereas even a draw will put Karnataka into the knockout on better goal difference. For Karnataka today, Christy Elena, Swetha (four each), Rohini, Kumari (two each), Pallavi and Divya figured in the scorers list. Mumbai's centreforward Papki scored five goals, including a hattrick, and Fatima struck a brace. Jyoti and Paulina were the other scorers. Centreforward Santosh Kashyap scored the consolation goal for Himachal. Air-India completed their programme in the evening beating lowly Kerala 4-0 (HT 2-0), but decided to proceed home early as there is little chance of overhauling Haryana who look poised for a last eight berth from pool 'D', but for an unlikely thrashing from West Bengal. Air-India's scorers were Ashwini (2), Urmila and Nellamma. A similar situation faces Orissa and Pepsu in pool 'G'. Pepsu beat Gujarat 4-0, with goals from Mandeep (2), Savita and Charanjeet to be on level terms on six points with Orissa who thrashed Andhra Pradesh 12-0 (HT 6-0). Their clash on Saturday will decide who will be the quarter-finalists. Orissa virtually toyed with their opponents defence and scored at will through Sarita (2), Anita (3), Jashinta (2), Angela (1), Ashrita (2), Anarita and Agnecia. In a match of no consequence, Jammu and Kashmir for a change defeated Pondicherry 9-0, after changing over with a 3-0 lead, Parveen (4), Sarabjit (2), Gurpreet, Amandeep and Arti scored for the winners. In five days so far, a
total of 193 goals had been scored from 26 matches, with
the losing sides accounting for only for goals. |

Ludhiana Police, HSB Club win PATIALA, Oct 1 A bagful of goals by Ludhiana Police and HSB Club, Nawanshahar, against their rivals ensured both teams smooth passage into the last eight of the 23rd All-India Gurdarshan Momorial Football Tournament being played at Nabha, near here, today. In the opening encounter in which Ludhiana Police hit the netting thrice against Lions Club, Yamunanagar, it has to be admitted that the opposition was took weak to engage itself in a contest in which a strain of mediocrity was all too evident. After an overcautious start the cops picked up the rhythm when Rajesh dodged past two defenders to drive the ball in the cage to make it 1-0. Arun Kumar the cops playmaker, performed his part impeccably, with the result that the cops forward line was never starved of good passes and of one such pass Sohan Lal was able to thread his way past the defence to ensure that his team had notched up a safe 2-0 lead. Close to the final whistle, after making a dashing run down the middle Arun Kumar netted in his teams third goal. The second match saw HSB Club, Nawanshahar, pumping in four goals before its rivals DFA, Kapurthala, knew what had hit them. It was in the last quarter
of the match that the Nawanshahar outfit became a little
complacent in which the Kapurthala strikers took full
advantage to score two consolation goals through Lakhbir
and S.P. Singh. For HSB, Kaku scored a brace, while Tony
and Jassi scored a goal each to make it 4-2. |
