Amritinder
tightens grip CHANDIGARH, Nov 20 "Baba has done it again", shouted the caddies as Amritinder Singh continued his stellar display and tightened his grip on the Hero Golf Cup on the penultimate day of the championship at the Chandigarh Golf Club here today. This 26-year-old city lad could not have asked for more two under five cards in three rounds. His best card of 67 today saw him emerging as the runaway leader with a three-day aggregate of 208. His nearest rival and favourite, Jeev Milkha Singh, had another bad day today with the bunkers turning out to be his nemesis. Jeev and the other challenger, Shiv Shankar Prasad Chowrasia, were trailing the leader by seven strokes. The seven-stroke lead should give Amritinder the much needed confidence when he resumes play on the final day tomorrow. And going by the crowds following the three top challengers, tomorrow's final showdown is definitely going to be a crowd-puller. While Amritinder putted well and handled his bunker shots with care. Jeev repeatedly got bogies from his bunker landings. But the worst was when he was caught in the sand-trap. Amritinder showed his class when he repeated his five-under performance today. On the sixth hole Amritinder made a par despite going over the green and landing into the flower bed. He got a free-drop and then made a par with a good up-and-down. At that stage he was running a par score. He then shot a birdie on the seventh, ninth, 10th and 12th holes. He capped his brilliant form with an eagle on the 13th, where he holed his bunker shot to be six-under for the day and nine under for the tournament. Jeev Milkha Singh after completing his front nine one-under with two birdie and one bogey, played badly from the bunker in the return nine to finish with bogies on the 11th, 14th and 16th. Despite trailing by seven strokes, Jeev said, "Golf is a funny game. Anything is possible. But I think it will now be difficult to catch up with "Baba", unless he plays really bad tomorrow". Chowrasia was steady till he made bogies on the 11th and 12th and then a double bogey on the 15th. Feroze Ali shot a three-under card of 69 with four birdies and one bogey. Shiv Prakash played a steady round of 72. Moving down were Bunty Randhawa who dropped four strokes in the first three before finally finishing at 77. Also losing ground was Amandeep Johl who finished with a three-over card of 75. Local golfer Manav Das
took over the lead in the amateur section from Delhi's
Jaiveer Singh with a creditable third round score of
one-over 73. Manav was thus 13-over 229 for the
tournament, two strokes ahead of Jaiveer and Saurabh
Bahuguna, who were joint second at 231. Jaiveer played an
inconsistent round of 79. |
IFA
Shield CALCUTTA, Nov 20 (PTI) Title aspirants Mohun Bagan sailed into the final edging out JCT Phagwara 2-1 in the semifinals of the 104th IFA Shield Football Tournament at the Salt Lake Stadium here today. The winners, who displayed more grit and determination during the match, will clash with their arch-rivals East Bengal in the final at the same venue on November 23. Federation Cup champions Bagan shot into lead in the 27th minute through Nazimul Haque. Following a Soumitra Chakraborty flag kick from the right, Bagans ace striker Chima Okerie headed the ball down for Haque near the goalmouth and the young striker kept his cool to push the ball home. The local glamour outfit consolidated their position in the 73rd minute when substitute Ranjan Chowdhury capitalised on a hasty clearance from Dipak Mandal to slam the ball in with a diagonal right footer from the edge of the box. The snap shot, which took JCT defenders and custodian Baljit Singh by surprise, went into the net past the far post. The Punjab team, who looked more organised in the intial stages of the first half launching waves of attacks, finally managed to score a consolation goal two minutes from time through Sukhjit Singh. Receiving a long through from the in-form Dipankar Roy, who put up another spectacular performance, Singh ran a few paces and slammed the ball in with a power-packed right footer. The match, played at a slow pace, failed to satisfy the handful of spectators who had hoped to watch a good contest. Wrong passes and lack of all-out initiatives upfront from both the teams robbed the match of much of its competitive edge. Bagan, who dominated the first half, muffed up an easy chance in the 20th minute when Nazimul, following a Chakraborty pass and with Baljit Singh at his mercy, let loose a left-footer which was off-target. Two minutes after lemon time, JCT went into the attack, and Deepankar Roy sent a defence-splitting pass to Harinder Singh, but closely marked by a defender, Harinder failed to control the ball, and Dinesh collected in the nick of time. Six minutes later, Bagan also got a chance, with Chima backheading from the edge of the box for Nazimul, who volleyed to Chakraborty, but the latter shot straight into the hands of Baljit. Chakraborty, who had a
good day, initiated a delightful move down the left flank
and sent a measured cross for Chima, who blew over the
bar. |
Steve Waugh leads Aussie fightback BRISBANE, Nov 20 (Reuters) Steve Waugh survived a controversial run-out decision to save Australia from a batting collapse on the first day of the first Ashes cricket Test against England today. Waugh finished the opening day at the Gabba unbeaten on 69 with Ian Healy 46 not out as Australia battled their way to 246 for five when play stopped. Waugh, as he has done on many occasions throughout his illustrious career, helped rescue Australia from a middle-order collapse but was lucky not to have been given out on 29. TV replays showed that he was stranded short of his ground while attempting a second run at the non-strikers end. But he was given the benefit of the doubt by third umpire Peter Parker because of confusion over whether or not the ball had hit the stumps. Alec Stewarts throw from the batsmans end was on target but replays seemed to indicate, although not conclusively, that English bowler Alan Mullally had already dislodged the bails in an unnecessary attempt to intercept the ball. Typically, Waugh, who averages more than 54 against the English, made the most of his let-off as he set about rebuilding Australias first innings. He brought up his 50 off just 80 deliveries and continued scoring freely in the final stages to finish the day within sight of a 16th Test hundred. England had played better cricket for most of the first day but failed to ram home their advantage in the final session. Letting themselves down with poor fielding. Apart from missing the run out, Englands fielders also grassed three catches, including two straightforward chances in the last half hour of play. The tourists gamble of playing five bowlers had earlier looked to have paid off when they reduced Australia to 106 for four an hour before tea. They captured the vital wickets of Australias in-form captain Mark Taylor and Mark Waugh within the space of three balls but claimed only one more victim on the day. Taylor, playing in his 100th Test, departed for 46 when he edged Dominic Cork to Nasser Hussain at second slip while Waugh was caught by Englands wicketkeeping skipper Stewart for 31 off Mullally. Mullally, who was born in England but grew up in Australia had earlier dismissed Michael Slater for 16 in the first session when the Australian edged to Mark Butcher at third slip. Butcher also took a fine catch at extra cover to dismiss Ricky Ponting for 21 and give cork his second victim while Darren Gough had trapped Justin Langer leg before wicket for eight. Steve Waugh and Ponting began the fightback with a stand of 72 for the fifth wicket before Waugh teamed up with Healy to add 68 for the sixth wicket. Healy, who scored a career best 161 not out against the West Indies at the Gabba two seasons ago, hit six boundaries during an entertaining and adventurous innings. But he should have been out for 37 when he top-edged a simple catch to Angus Fraser at third-man only to see the ball dropped. Then, in the final over of the day, Hussain, who had dropped Slater earlier on, spilt a chance from Steve Waugh when he was on 68. The opening days play was cut short by one over even though it was extended by almost an hour. More than 35 minutes was lost after tea because of bad light. Under International
Cricket Council rules, the umpires could have allowed
play to continue with the use of floodlights if both
teams had agreed but England rejected the idea out of
hand before the tour began. |
Shruti
Khanna lifts golf title NEW DELHI, Nov 20 In an exciting three-tier contest for supremacy, Shruti Khanna withstood the mounting pressure from defending champion Parnita Garewal and nine-time winner Nonita Lal Qureshi to translate her ambition into winning the title of the 31st Ladies Northern India Open Amateur Golf Championship at the Delhi Golf Club course today. The tall, long-haired, US-trained Shruti kept her nerves in the concluding stage of the five-day meet to show the best card of one-over 73 (aggregate 297) and have her name inscribed on the trophy. Parnita (Chandigarh) fought gallantly all the way but had to rest content with the runner-up position being a stroke behind the new champion. Her days score of two-over 74 gave her the aggregate of 298. The more Nonita tried to bring her experience into play, the less she could upstage the two young leaders and came third with the score of three-over 75 (aggregate 299). Shruti wore a huge, satisfying grin on her face. She attributed her success to Simi Mehra. "I was playing badly before the start of the competition but Simi Mehra, the only Indian woman professional motivated me to get into my rhythm". Both Parnita and Nonita declined to offer any reason for their failure to win the title. "It was anybodys game and Shruti won it", said Nonita. Her observation was echoed by Parnita. When they teed-off at the overnight total of 224, all three Shruti, Parnita and Nonita seemed slightly edgy. They failed to get even a solitary birdie in the first nine. But they earned two bogeys each to be out two-over 38. All three stayed level till the 11th. On the 12th, both Shruti and Parnita had a birdie and forged ahead Nonita by a stroke. Shruti sunk a beautiful birdie on the 13th to get into the lead. This became vital as Parnita earned a bogey. It was sheer bad luck that the ball hit the cup and stayed out instead of getting into the hole. Shruti dropped a stroke on the 16th. But the slender one-stroke lead that she had secured on the 13rd proved decisive. In the back nine, Shruti carded one-under-35 (total 73), Parnita level-par 36 (74) and Nonita one-over 37 (75). The organisers said that it was one of the most closely-contested final days play. The over-all standard was not exactly high but participants displayed immense sporting spirit on all four days. "This was more than satisfying", said organisers. Parnita reportedly, is thinking of turning pro after she returns from the Asian Games (Bangkok). She feels she is mentally strong enough to withstand the pressures of the professional circuit. Her mother also thinks that way. If she turns pro, she will be the second Indian to do so. While Ranu Puri was
presented the Honda City car, many others received
several prizes for their display on four days. |

After losing the third wicket at 96 Delhi found itself in deep trouble losing four wickets for an addition of only one run. Rahul claimed seven wickets giving away just 35 runs. A valuable stand of 35 for the eighth wicket between Kunal Bhardwaj and Amandeep helped Delhi raise its score to 142. In reply Haryana scored 16
