Amritinder tightens grip
By Donald Banerjee
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Nov 20 — "Baba has done it again", shouted the caddies as Amritinder Singh continued his stellar display and tightened his grip on the Hero Golf Cup on the penultimate day of the championship at the Chandigarh Golf Club here today.

This 26-year-old city lad could not have asked for more two under five cards in three rounds. His best card of 67 today saw him emerging as the runaway leader with a three-day aggregate of 208. His nearest rival and favourite, Jeev Milkha Singh, had another bad day today with the bunkers turning out to be his nemesis. Jeev and the other challenger, Shiv Shankar Prasad Chowrasia, were trailing the leader by seven strokes.

The seven-stroke lead should give Amritinder the much needed confidence when he resumes play on the final day tomorrow. And going by the crowds following the three top challengers, tomorrow's final showdown is definitely going to be a crowd-puller.

While Amritinder putted well and handled his bunker shots with care. Jeev repeatedly got bogies from his bunker landings. But the worst was when he was caught in the sand-trap.

Amritinder showed his class when he repeated his five-under performance today. On the sixth hole Amritinder made a par despite going over the green and landing into the flower bed. He got a free-drop and then made a par with a good up-and-down.

At that stage he was running a par score. He then shot a birdie on the seventh, ninth, 10th and 12th holes. He capped his brilliant form with an eagle on the 13th, where he holed his bunker shot to be six-under for the day and nine under for the tournament.

Jeev Milkha Singh after completing his front nine one-under with two birdie and one bogey, played badly from the bunker in the return nine to finish with bogies on the 11th, 14th and 16th.

Despite trailing by seven strokes, Jeev said, "Golf is a funny game. Anything is possible. But I think it will now be difficult to catch up with "Baba", unless he plays really bad tomorrow".

Chowrasia was steady till he made bogies on the 11th and 12th and then a double bogey on the 15th.

Feroze Ali shot a three-under card of 69 with four birdies and one bogey. Shiv Prakash played a steady round of 72. Moving down were Bunty Randhawa who dropped four strokes in the first three before finally finishing at 77. Also losing ground was Amandeep Johl who finished with a three-over card of 75.

Local golfer Manav Das took over the lead in the amateur section from Delhi's Jaiveer Singh with a creditable third round score of one-over 73. Manav was thus 13-over 229 for the tournament, two strokes ahead of Jaiveer and Saurabh Bahuguna, who were joint second at 231. Jaiveer played an inconsistent round of 79.Top

IFA Shield
Bagan down JCT,enter final

CALCUTTA, Nov 20 (PTI) — Title aspirants Mohun Bagan sailed into the final edging out JCT Phagwara 2-1 in the semifinals of the 104th IFA Shield Football Tournament at the Salt Lake Stadium here today.

The winners, who displayed more grit and determination during the match, will clash with their arch-rivals East Bengal in the final at the same venue on November 23.

Federation Cup champions Bagan shot into lead in the 27th minute through Nazimul Haque. Following a Soumitra Chakraborty flag kick from the right, Bagan’s ace striker Chima Okerie headed the ball down for Haque near the goalmouth and the young striker kept his cool to push the ball home.

The local glamour outfit consolidated their position in the 73rd minute when substitute Ranjan Chowdhury capitalised on a hasty clearance from Dipak Mandal to slam the ball in with a diagonal right footer from the edge of the box. The snap shot, which took JCT defenders and custodian Baljit Singh by surprise, went into the net past the far post.

The Punjab team, who looked more organised in the intial stages of the first half launching waves of attacks, finally managed to score a consolation goal two minutes from time through Sukhjit Singh.

Receiving a long through from the in-form Dipankar Roy, who put up another spectacular performance, Singh ran a few paces and slammed the ball in with a power-packed right footer. The match, played at a slow pace, failed to satisfy the handful of spectators who had hoped to watch a good contest. Wrong passes and lack of all-out initiatives upfront from both the teams robbed the match of much of its competitive edge.

Bagan, who dominated the first half, muffed up an easy chance in the 20th minute when Nazimul, following a Chakraborty pass and with Baljit Singh at his mercy, let loose a left-footer which was off-target.

Two minutes after lemon time, JCT went into the attack, and Deepankar Roy sent a defence-splitting pass to Harinder Singh, but closely marked by a defender, Harinder failed to control the ball, and Dinesh collected in the nick of time.

Six minutes later, Bagan also got a chance, with Chima backheading from the edge of the box for Nazimul, who volleyed to Chakraborty, but the latter shot straight into the hands of Baljit.

Chakraborty, who had a good day, initiated a delightful move down the left flank and sent a measured cross for Chima, who blew over the bar.Top

Yohanna steers Pak to victory

GUJRANWALA, Nov 20 (Reuters) — Yousaf Yohanna continued his impressive form in one-day internationals by hitting an unbeaten 55 to steer Pakistan to a four-wicket victory over Zimbabwe today.

Yohanna, who scored his maiden limited overs century at Lahore 10 days ago in the series against Australia, shared crucial stands with his captain Aamir Sohail and Moin Khan to pull Pakistan out of trouble.

The Pakistanis, having dismissed Zimbabwe for 237 in 49.3 of their 50 overs, won the first of three one-dayers at 241 for six with 14 balls to spare.

Yohanna twice led a recovery, first when he came in after his side had slumped from 60 for nought to 87 for three, and again at 145 for five after two wickets had gone while only four runs were added.

Pakistan had made a flying start as Sohail, man of the match for his 91 from 105 balls with nine fours and a six, and fellow opener Saeed Anwar (19) put on 60 in 12.5 overs.

After the dismissals of Anwar, Ijaz Ahmed (5), who fell to a stunning catch by Neil Johnson at mid-on off Heath Streak, and Inzamam-ul-Haq (3), Aamir and Yohanna added 54 in 62 balls for the fourth wicket.

Sohail, caught at short fine leg sweeping the left-arm spin of Grant Flower, and Shahid Afridi (2) then went in rapid succession.Top

Windies 'A' settle for draw

MUMBAI, Nov 20 (PTI) — West Indies ‘A’ made little effort to achieve a daunting victory target of 236 off 47 overs set up by the Board President’s XI and their three-day tour opener ended in a tame draw here today.

The Windies made 117 for three wickets in the second innings when play was called off after the ninth mandatory over with stand-in skipper Sherwin Campbell (37) and hard-hitting Richard Smith (51 — 61b, 8x4) remaining unbeaten.

The batsmen out in the windies second knock were opener Adrian Griffith (5), Keith Semple (11) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (7). Left-arm spinner Rahul Sanghvi accounted for the latter two batsmen after seamer Debashish Mohanty had dismissed left hander Griffith.

Earlier, the home team had declared their second innings closed with an overall lead of 235 at 184 for eight in the tenth over and 49 minutes after lunch.

Amol Muzumdar, entrusted with the opener’s job following the hamstring injury to Nikhil Haldipur, top-scored with a painstaking knock of 74 in 228 minutes.

Muzumdar also featured in a third-wicket stand of 83 with stylish left hander Amay Khurasia who missed his second successive half century in the match by two runs.

The home team had started the day at the overnight total of 63 for two with Muzumdar and Khurasia at the crease.

The Windies ‘A’ now move on to Pune to take on the Indian youth team in a three-day fixture from November 23.

The home team, which had a 51-run cushion over the tourists after the first innings, batted on sedately in the morning session with the ever-watchful Muzumdar and the strangely subdued Khurasia, who had made a breezy 65 in the first knock, commencing their second innings 114 runs ahead.

Muzumdar was lucky to be let off on 27 by stumper Wayne Phillip when he tried to cut left-arm spinner Neil McGarrell. He and Khurasia put on a good stand to take the total from the overnight 63 to 115 when the latter was run out by a direct hit at the striker’s end stumps from McGarrell.

It was a sad end to another promising innings by the Madhya Pradesh left hander who faced 86 balls in his 100-minute stay and struck three fours and a six.

Muzumdar and new man Bharadwaj took the score to 148 for three at lunch. The two batted on sedately after the break to take the total to 164 before five wickets fell in a heap.

Bharadwaj fell at 164, mistiming a pull shot off leg spinner Rawl Lewis and skying the ball to short mid-wicket fielder McGarrell, while Muzumdar fell a run later when he was rapped on the pads and declared out leg before off Collins.

MSK Prasad, Sanghvi and Mohanty were sent back in quick succession by Collins and Lewis so that four wickets had fallen for the addition of only 10 runs. Board eleven skipper Hrishikesh Kanitkar applied closure at the fall of Mohanty.

The Windies batsmen never attempted to go for the runs and, instead, preferred to have valuable batting practice for the forthcoming two-match ‘Test’ series.Top

Steve Waugh leads Aussie fightback

BRISBANE, Nov 20 (Reuters) — Steve Waugh survived a controversial run-out decision to save Australia from a batting collapse on the first day of the first Ashes cricket Test against England today.

Waugh finished the opening day at the Gabba unbeaten on 69 with Ian Healy 46 not out as Australia battled their way to 246 for five when play stopped.

Waugh, as he has done on many occasions throughout his illustrious career, helped rescue Australia from a middle-order collapse but was lucky not to have been given out on 29.

TV replays showed that he was stranded short of his ground while attempting a second run at the non-striker’s end.

But he was given the benefit of the doubt by third umpire Peter Parker because of confusion over whether or not the ball had hit the stumps.

Alec Stewart’s throw from the batsman’s end was on target but replays seemed to indicate, although not conclusively, that English bowler Alan Mullally had already dislodged the bails in an unnecessary attempt to intercept the ball.

Typically, Waugh, who averages more than 54 against the English, made the most of his let-off as he set about rebuilding Australia’s first innings.

He brought up his 50 off just 80 deliveries and continued scoring freely in the final stages to finish the day within sight of a 16th Test hundred.

England had played better cricket for most of the first day but failed to ram home their advantage in the final session. Letting themselves down with poor fielding.

Apart from missing the run out, England’s fielders also grassed three catches, including two straightforward chances in the last half hour of play.

The tourists’ gamble of playing five bowlers had earlier looked to have paid off when they reduced Australia to 106 for four an hour before tea.

They captured the vital wickets of Australia’s in-form captain Mark Taylor and Mark Waugh within the space of three balls but claimed only one more victim on the day.

Taylor, playing in his 100th Test, departed for 46 when he edged Dominic Cork to Nasser Hussain at second slip while Waugh was caught by England’s wicketkeeping skipper Stewart for 31 off Mullally.

Mullally, who was born in England but grew up in Australia had earlier dismissed Michael Slater for 16 in the first session when the Australian edged to Mark Butcher at third slip.

Butcher also took a fine catch at extra cover to dismiss Ricky Ponting for 21 and give cork his second victim while Darren Gough had trapped Justin Langer leg before wicket for eight.

Steve Waugh and Ponting began the fightback with a stand of 72 for the fifth wicket before Waugh teamed up with Healy to add 68 for the sixth wicket.

Healy, who scored a career best 161 not out against the West Indies at the Gabba two seasons ago, hit six boundaries during an entertaining and adventurous innings.

But he should have been out for 37 when he top-edged a simple catch to Angus Fraser at third-man only to see the ball dropped.

Then, in the final over of the day, Hussain, who had dropped Slater earlier on, spilt a chance from Steve Waugh when he was on 68.

The opening day’s play was cut short by one over even though it was extended by almost an hour. More than 35 minutes was lost after tea because of bad light.

Under International Cricket Council rules, the umpires could have allowed play to continue with the use of floodlights if both teams had agreed but England rejected the idea out of hand before the tour began.Top

Seles-Graf rivalry resumes

NEW YORK, Nov 20 (Reuters) — The thrilling three-set tussle between Monica Seles and Steffi Graf at the Chase Championship yesterday was a poignant reminder of what once had the makings of the greatest rivalry in women’s tennis history.

"Win or lose, it’s a great match," Seles said of the 1-6 6-4 6-4 quarter-final triumph by Graf, that marked the first time the former world number ones had met in two years, and the first time they had clashed in a round earlier than a final in almost a decade.

Seles, who turns 25 in two weeks, has endured so much trauma and tragedy in the last five years that she seems a lifetime removed from the giggling teenager with the thundering two-fisted groundstrokes and distractingly loud grunts who took tennis by storm at the start of the 1990s.

"Really one thing after another keeps happening in my life, but I am getting better at least at dealing with it," she said after her 1998 campaign came to an end with defeat.

It’s easy to forget just how dominant Seles had become by the time a horrific Hamburg stabbing suddenly halted her career at its zenith in the spring of 1993.

Between May of 1990 and April of 1993 Seles won three consecutive French Opens, two successive US Opens and three straight Australian Open titles. She also won the season-ending championship three years running.

Between mid 1989 and early 1993, Seles and Graf tangled in eight finals — four of them at Grand Slam events. Seles took two of her Roland Garros titles, one Australian crown and the world’s top ranking from Graf, while the German reigned supreme at Wimbledon.

Since the stabbing that took Seles out of the game for more than two years, Graf has won 10 of her 21 Grand Slam titles, while Seles has added just one more Australian crown.

The career head-to-head now stands at 9-4 in Graf’s favour — an even 3-3 in Grand Slam finals. But there’s no telling how many sensational finals Graf and Seles might have contested has Seles’s career continued uninterrupted.

When asked if, with Graf’s resurrection from two injury-plagued years and her own recent injury-free run, their rivalry could once again dominate the women’s tennis scene, Seles said that chance had likely passed.

"I don’t see that because there are too many players on the same level as Steffi and my game," said the sixth-ranked Seles "You have 10 other players I could name right now who play the same level of game we played tonight. Everybody has improved.

"But if we both stay in the game and both play well, then we will definitely have some great matches," predicted Seles, who ended the year strong, winning the Canadian Open in August, a Tokyo event in September and finishing runner-up in Moscow last month.

It has been an emotionally draining year for Seles, whose father, lifelong coach and constant travelling companion, Karolj, lost his battle with stomach cancer in May.

Only days later, Seles went to Paris, because it was what her father would have wanted, to play the French Open, where she produced an emotionally-charged run to the final.

Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario had so much sympathy and respect for Seles that she actually apologised to the Yugoslav-born American for beating her in that final.

Seles said considering how little she practised and what she went through mentally, "on the court, I think it has been great year."

She added: "I learned to deal with a few things and that has helped me pull through a lot of weeks."

Her immediate plans include: "a good month to just really relax, take off from tennis, spend some time with my family and friends."

And then? "Getting ready for Australia," where if the fans are lucky, she just might run into Steffi Graf in the final. Top

Punjab comfortably placed

AMRITSAR, Nov 20 (UNI) — Hosts Punjab were comfortably placed at 225 for the loss of three wickets in their first innings on the opening day of the four-day North Zone Ranji Trophy league encounter against Haryana at the Gandhi Grounds here today.

At draw of stumps Pankaj Dharmani was batting on 68 compiled with the help of eight fours and a six. Keeping him company was left handed batsman Dinesh. Skipper Rathore scored 45, while his opening partner Reetinder Sodhi contributed 51 and the young Ravneet Ricky had 40 to his credit.

For Haryana all three wickets were taken by off spinner Pankaj Thakur.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, skipper Rathore and Sodhi, who opened the innings in the absence of Navjot Sidhu, had no problem in negotiating the Haryana bowling attack.

The opening wicket partnership yielded 87 runs and at lunch the hosts were 103 for the loss of Rathore’s wicket who was caught by Shafiq Khan in front of the wicket off Pankaj Thakur.

Sodhi was out soon after the lunch interval caught without the addition of any runs to the lunch time score, he too fell to a catch by Dalal off Thakur.

The third wicket stand between Dharmani and Ravneet Ricky added a valuable 97 runs. Ricky was out after the tea break, caught at silly point off Thakur.

While Sidhu opted out of the match due to his selection in the Indian squad for the tour of New Zealand, Ajay Jadeja, the captain of Haryana too opted out of the match.Top

Punjab cops rout Sri Lanka XI

NEW DELHI, Nov 20 (PTI) — Top contenders Punjab Police thrashed a Sri Lankan XI 10-0 in a pool II match while Steel Authority of India (SAIL) twice came from behind to surprise Army XI 3-2 in the super league phase of the 35th Nehru-ONGC Senior Hockey Tournament here today.

In a pool III match Surjeet memorial hockey runners-up Punjab and Sind Bank held Air India 1-1 in their first match at the National Stadium here.

Harinder Singh (9th, 43rd, 60th minute) and Jagdev Singh (14th, 22nd, 35th min) - all off penalty corners - struck thrice each after Sarabjit Singh (5th) had set them up with an early goal as Punjab Police rode roughshod over the hapless Sri Lankans to score the biggest win of the super league thus far.

Baljeet Singh (24th), Kuljinder Grewal (55th) and Harpreet Singh (69th) completed the tally for the cops who led 6-0 at the breather. Punjab Police’s domination of the match was reflected in the 17 penalty corners they earned. The Lankans squandered the two they earned.

In contrast, SAIL had to fight Army XI tooth and nail for the victory in pool I. They were down by a goal as K. Horo scored for the Army XI in the very first minute. SAIL, however, did not waste much time and levelled 15 minutes later when Prakash Chalke sounded the board.Top

Shruti Khanna lifts golf title
From Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, Nov 20 — In an exciting three-tier contest for supremacy, Shruti Khanna withstood the mounting pressure from defending champion Parnita Garewal and nine-time winner Nonita Lal Qureshi to translate her ambition into winning the title of the 31st Ladies Northern India Open Amateur Golf Championship at the Delhi Golf Club course today.

The tall, long-haired, US-trained Shruti kept her nerves in the concluding stage of the five-day meet to show the best card of one-over 73 (aggregate 297) and have her name inscribed on the trophy.

Parnita (Chandigarh) fought gallantly all the way but had to rest content with the runner-up position being a stroke behind the new champion. Her day’s score of two-over 74 gave her the aggregate of 298.

The more Nonita tried to bring her experience into play, the less she could upstage the two young leaders and came third with the score of three-over 75 (aggregate 299).

Shruti wore a huge, satisfying grin on her face. She attributed her success to Simi Mehra. "I was playing badly before the start of the competition but Simi Mehra, the only Indian woman professional motivated me to get into my rhythm".

Both Parnita and Nonita declined to offer any reason for their failure to win the title. "It was anybody’s game and Shruti won it", said Nonita. Her observation was echoed by Parnita.

When they teed-off at the overnight total of 224, all three— Shruti, Parnita and Nonita seemed slightly edgy. They failed to get even a solitary birdie in the first nine. But they earned two bogeys each to be out two-over 38.

All three stayed level till the 11th. On the 12th, both Shruti and Parnita had a birdie and forged ahead Nonita by a stroke. Shruti sunk a beautiful birdie on the 13th to get into the lead. This became vital as Parnita earned a bogey. It was sheer bad luck that the ball hit the cup and stayed out instead of getting into the hole.

Shruti dropped a stroke on the 16th. But the slender one-stroke lead that she had secured on the 13rd proved decisive. In the back nine, Shruti carded one-under-35 (total 73), Parnita level-par 36 (74) and Nonita one-over 37 (75).

The organisers said that it was one of the most closely-contested final day’s play. The over-all standard was not exactly high but participants displayed immense sporting spirit on all four days. "This was more than satisfying", said organisers.

Parnita reportedly, is thinking of turning pro after she returns from the Asian Games (Bangkok). She feels she is mentally strong enough to withstand the pressures of the professional circuit. Her mother also thinks that way. If she turns pro, she will be the second Indian to do so.

While Ranu Puri was presented the Honda City car, many others received several prizes for their display on four days.Top

India, Lanka to clash in final

COLOMBO, Nov 20 (PTI) — India emerged clear winners in the semifinal league of the Bristol Freedom Cup International Football Tournament despite being held to a draw by Sri Lanka in the final league engagement last night.

The hosts played a creditable 1-1 draw with India and made sure of their berth in the final.

India had already reached the final by winning against the Maldives and Malaysia.

Lankans needed just a draw to edge past Maldives, who had four points from three encounters after their 2-1 win over Malaysia. Sri Lanka, with one win and a draw, earned another point after holding strong India and earned a passage into the final.

The plucky Maldivians had levelled 2-2 with Sri Lanka in their preliminary match against Sri Lanka on Wednesday.Top

LUDHIANA, Nov 20 — In a battle for supremacy, South Eastern Railway, Calcutta, outplayed Western Railway, Mumbai, 1-0 to emerge champions in the third All-India Mohinder Partap Singh Grewal Memorial Women's Hockey Tournament which concluded at the Punjab Agricultural University grounds here yesterday.

Annoyed with the umpire's decision SER players walked off the field but soon better sense prevailed and they returned to the field. As play resumed SER women scored the much-needed goal in 86th minute through international Savitri Purthy.

Brian McMillan retires

CAPE TOWN, Nov 20 (Reuters) — South African all-rounder Brian McMillan has announced his retirement from international cricket.

"There comes a time when everyone has to re-assess their priorities and my time is now. I've thought long and hard about it, and I've chatted to (national selection convener) Peter Pollock, and I have no doubt that now is the time to call it a day," McMillan said.

McMillan, 35 next month, scored 1,968 runs at an average of 39.36 in 38 Tests. He hit three centuries and 13 50s. The seamer took 75 wickets at an average of 33.83.

He was renowned for his prowess at second slip. He held 49 catches in Tests, many of them match-winners.

"He was the man we feared most — he had the ability to change a match with bat, ball and with a catch," said former England captain Mike Atherton after his country's five-Test tour of the Republic in 1995.

"He was a player we understood because he played the game like we did — he was uncompromising and very, very hard," said former Australian skipper Allan Border.

"There are many highlights," reflected McMillan, the isolation-breaking tour of India in 1991, the wicket of Ian Botham, who was a childhood hero and is now a mate, in the World Cup semifinal of 1992, the 1994 Test win against England at Lord's and the Aussie win in Sydney later in the same.Top

Paes-Bhupathi duo crashes out

NEW YORK, Nov 20 (PTI) — India’s world number two pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi lost a close match yesterday to the sixth seeds Sandon Stolle and Cyril Suk, their second straight loss at the season-ending ATP World Doubles Championship at Hartford near here.

The Indian tandem of Paes-Bhupathi, who last year advanced to the final on their debut at the year-ending championship, were eliminated from semifinal consideration after 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 verdict.

With the second straight loss, after losing opening tie against the Americans Donald Johnson and Francisco Montana, the doubles powerhouse of Paes-Bhupathi lost all important opportunity to grab number one ranking on the ATP computer.

Top ranked Dutch team of Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis rallied for a three-set victory over France’s Olivier Delaitre and Fabrice Santoro assuring themselves semifinal berth.

Eltingh-Haarhuis, who are playing their last tournament as partners with the former announcing he would retire at the end of the year, recovered after dropping the first set for a 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 win over the seventh seeds.

The Indian duo were in for a surprise from Aussie-Czech combination in the gold group. Stolle-Suk, who lost to fourth seeds Mark Knowles (Bahamas)/Daniel Nestor (Canada) on Wednesday, came from behind to beat their better rated opponents.

Indians have won six titles from eight finals this year -posting their biggest victory only two weeks ago at the Super 9 Paris Indoor Open, handing Eltingh-Haarhuis their only loss in the final this year. But they have blown one-set leads in each of their matches here. Top
