Six-wicket haul by Harbhajan

MUMBAI, Nov 19 (PTI) — Young Punjab off-spinner Harbhajan Singh got prodigious turn with his reformed action to reap a six-wicket haul and help Board President's XI skittle out the visiting West Indies A for a paltry 209 in the first knock on the second day of the three-day match here today.

Harbhajan, who recently underwent a traumatic period following allegations of chucking by an international panel of experts of the International Cricket Council (ICC), which forced him to remodel his delivery style, put the issue firmly behind him and stole the show at the Brabourne Stadium.

His haul of six for 63, well-supported by Delhi left-arm spinner Rahul Sanghvi's display of two for 74, put the skids on the visitors' hopes of taking a first innings lead as they, chasing the home team's first innings tally of 260, fell 51 runs short.

The board eleven then made 63 for two off 22 overs in the second innings to have the upper hand at the end of the day with an overall advantage of 114.

Earlier, the home team — resuming at their overnight total of 252 for 7 — lost their remaining three wickets to left-arm paceman Pedro Collins who dismissed the last three batsmen with the second new ball in only 11 balls to finish with fine figures of four for 56.

Sanghvi (9) Harbhajan, who made a belligerent 31 with five boundaries, and last man Robin Singh (Jr) were the 22-year-old Barbados paceman's victims today morning.

Harbhajan, who is into his third match after returning from a two-day stint with ICC-acknowledged action-reform expert Fred Titmus at London, bowled with a lot of guile to Bamboozle the Windies batsmen most of whom were unaccustomed to playing spin of this calibre.

The youngster got rid of opener Adrian Griffith (44), one-down Keith Semple (25), left-hander Wavell Hinds (36), Rawl Lewis (5), Neil Mcgarrell (0) and Wayne Phillip (0).

Harbhajan was on a hat-trick on either side of tea when he sent back McGarrell and Phillip off successive balls in one over interrupted by the interval.

Bowling with a flatter trajectory and faster through the air than before his traumatic experience, Harbhajan made all the batsmen dance to his tunes. He took his last three wickets off only six balls without giving away any run.

Harbhajan was given good support at the other end by Sanghvi who claimed the wickets of the hard-hitting Richard Smith, who top-scored with 48 (6x4, 1x6) in 57 balls, and Collins (7).

Board eleven captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar and medium-pacer Robin Singh captured the other two wickets in the Windies first innings which was terminated 33 minutes into the final session.

In the second innings, the Board eleven lost opener Jitender Singh (0), in the first over to Collins, and Kanitkar (17), who was sent back by left-arm spinner McGarrell, before Amol Muzumdar (24) and Amay Khurasia (20) saw them through to the close without being separated. Top

Jeev, Shiv keep up the heat
By Donald Banerjee
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Nov 19 — With the sparks still flying from the sizzling performance by Amritinder Singh yesterday, two golfers — Jeev Milkha Singh and Shiv Shankar Prasad Chowrasia kept up the heat on the Chandigarh golf course green on the second day of the Hero Golf Chandigarh Open here today.

The 20-year-old Chowrasia from Calcutta shot six birdies to return a four-under card of 68. He thus had a two-day aggregate of 141, the same as Amritinder, who returned a poor card of 74 today.

But it was Chandigarh boy Chiranjeev Milkha Singh who seemed to have struck a bright patch in the front nine. Despite a good show of his putting, the ball just refused to take the last roll near the hole on two occasions. The spectators accompanying the top three held their breath as Jeev's putt saw the ball rolling down and stopping just at the edge on the first two holes. And on the third hole, he missed a simple three-footer birdie chance. But Jeev then scored a hat-trick of birdies on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes. But the return nine holes ended on a par note with two birdies and two bogeys. He finished with a two-day aggregate of 142, just one-stroke behind the joint leaders.

In the joint fourth place after the second round were Bunty Randhawa (Calcutta), Shiv Prakash (Kanpur) and Amandeep Johl of Chandigarh at one-over 145.

Chowrasia, who possesses extremely strong short game, putted well, even though he felt that his chipping was a bit off today.

Chowrasia made a birdie on the second, when after being short of the green with his second shot, he chipped to four feet and made the putt. On the third, he made a bogey from the left bunker and then sunk a 12-footer on the eighth. On the ninth, he shot a birdie and then made a bogey. He then made birdies on the 12th, 15th and 16th to finish four-under for the day.

Overnight leader Amritinder Singh had trouble with his driver, which kept pulling to the left. He made bogies on the fourth and the sixth where he went into the left bunker from the left rough. He then made a birdie on the ninth and followed it up with a double bogey on the 10th when he again went into the left bushes and then his second shot got entangled in a tree. A birdie on the 12th made him two-over 74 for the day and three-under 141 for the tournament.

Amandeep Johl, enjoying his golf even more after wining Lexus luxury car for making a hole-in-one during the Thailand Open last week, returned a two-under 70 card, replete with monstrous putts. After missing a four-feet par putt on the first to start with a bogey, he missed a two-footer birdie putt on the second. Later, he sunk a 25-footer on the seventh, a 20-footer on the 10th, a 30-footer on the 11th and a 20-footer on the 13th. In between, he made a bogey on the 12th, when his second shot from the right rough, hit a trec and remained on the fairway.

Mhow's Mukesh Kumar moved up the leaderboard with a two-under 70 card, in which he made four birdies and two bogies. He kept a par putt short on the 1st, and then did the same with a 6-footer par putt on the fifth for his two bogies. He had birdies on the second, sixth, 13th and 18th and was unlucky to miss an eagle on the 13th.

Among the Amateur, Delhi's Jaiveer Singh came to the forefront today after a good round of two over 74. He has now tallied to eight over 152. In the joint second place amongst the amateurs, HS Kang and Manav Das were at 12 over 156.Top

England unshaken by rough welcome

BRISBANE, Nov 19 (Reuters) — England’s build-up to the Ashes cricket series starting at the Gabba tomorrow has been far from incident-free.

One player was beaten up by a drunk, several batsmen have been belted by short-pitched deliveries, and their star bowler have been openly ridiculed.

But unshaken by the rough Aussie welcome, England’s battle-hardened troops still believe they can win back the sacred prize of cricket.

"Nothing that’s happened will matter one bit when the team get out on the field tomorrow," England coach David Lloyd said today.

"As far as I'm concerned the talking is all over and it’s what happens out there that counts."

Australia have held the Ashes since 1989, winning five successive series. Most observers believe England’s chances of winning the five-match series are slim.

The notable exception is Mark Taylor, the Australian captain, who will be playing in his 100th Test tomorrow.

Taylor, perhaps more than any other cricketer of his generation, has ridden the game’s highs and lows and is not prepared to discount England’s chances.

He was on the brink of losing his place in the Australian team just 18 months ago, but now sits alongside Sir Donald Bradman as Australia’s greatest run scorer in a single Test innings.

Taylor has also played in each of Australia’s last five Ashes wins — but believes this one will be the hardest yet.

Taylor said: "Things can change very quickly in this game."

"When we went to England in 1989 we were known as the worst team ever to leave Australian shores, yet we won 4-0.

"This England team is the most confident I’ve ever seen and they haven’t lost a game on tour so far so of course they’ll be tough."

England have definitely had more than their fair share of troubles on tour.

Players have been injured while batting, injured in training and, in the case of John Crawley, injured after being set upon by a drunk while walking home.

But their biggest concern has been the form of their top-order batsman. Mark Butcher has scored just nine runs in his last five innings after being injured in the first match.

And Michael Atherton, Butcher’s opening partner, has needed painkilling injections to his lower back to give him any chance of playing in the first of the five Tests.

Australia, on the other hand, have enjoyed a relatively smooth build-up to the opening Test and were this week rated by cricket Bible Wisden as the best team of all time.

They returned home after an historic series win in Pakistan, and have been able to select a full-strength side with the notable exception of star leg spinner Shane Warne.

Warne has tormented England over the past five years but Taylor believes Australia can still win without him.

"I’ve always said that we can beat England without Warne but we know we’ll have to play very well," Taylor said.

"This is the Ashes and the players on both teams will rise to the occasion."

AFP: Mark Taylor’s cricketing cycle is very much on the upswing as he goes into his 100th Test match here against England.

Seventeen months ago Taylor’s Test cricket career looked doomed after a demoralising run of 21 Test innings without scoring 50.

There were those calling for his head, with former Test skipper Greg Chappell famously saying he was "mentally unfit" to lead Australia early on last year’s Ashes tour in England.

It’s well documented that tormented Taylor, with his head squarely on the block, courageously scored 129. And even though his team lost the first Edgbaston Test to England by nine wickets, Taylor had exercised the demons.

His fortunes have been bountiful in the ensuing period, leading Australia to series victories over England, South Africa and Pakistan.

It was 34-year-old Taylor’s noble decision to declare on his overnight score of 334 during last month’s second Peshawar Test in Pakistan that has forged him closer to Australian cricket devotees.

There was a certain amount of symbolism in Taylor’s selfless decision, with Brian Lara’s world record 375 beckoning the following day against weary Pakistani bowlers.

His decision to voluntarily call off his chase for history for the sake of his team forever linked him with the immortal Donald Bradman who made the same score against England in Leed in 1930.

One of Australia’s great advantages over England heading into the new Ashes campaign is Taylor’s intuitive leadership.Top

Mohun Bagan, JCT to clash today

CALCUTTA, Nov 19 (PTI) — Favourites Mohun Bagan hope to exploit home advantage as they take on JCT , Phagwara, in the semifinal of the 104th IFA Shield Football Tournament at the Salt Lake Stadium here tomorrow.

The local giants, who launched their season’s campaign with a bang annexing the Federation Cup but thereafter put up a lacklustre performance in the Calcutta league and Durand Cup, have looked a rejuvenated side in the shield under their new coach P.K. Banerjee.

The team has got a further boost with Kenyan stopper Samuel Omolo and Iraqi medio Yonan Basin rejoining the side after illness-prompted lay-offs.

"Omolo and Basim are still not fully fit. It speaks volumes for their sincerity and physique that they could stage a comeback in such a short time. Had they been Indians, they would not have been in a position to take the field so soon’’, Banerjee said.

Nigerian veteran Chima Okerie has emerged as the mainstay of the Bagan forwardline, and has been a constant tormentor for the rival defenders in the tournament.

Despite having to play without a number of their stars, who have been called for national duty, Bagan have been well served by the substitutes like Soumitra Chakraborty who have proved their worth in the tournament.

But despite being the stronger team on paper, Mohun Bagan can hardly afford to be complacent against a determined JCT who are quite capable of turning the tables on any fancied team on their day.

The Phagwara outfit have lost much of their sheen in the last two seasons with most of the star players moving out to other clubs. The team has not been able to make much of an impact in major tournaments ever since the star exodus.

But the players have been quite impressive in the IFA Shield and coach Sukhvinder Singh was hoping that it would herald a new phase for the beleaguered club which has found the going tough in the semi-professional football scenario.

"We have not played too many tournaments in recent times. We are still in the process of re-building the team. So far we have done quite well and hope to carry on the good work’’, coach Sukhvinder Singh said.

JCT will be relying on striker Dipankar Roy, who has done most of the scoring for his team, to deliver the goods on the morrow. It remains to be seen whether Roy will be able to pierce the much stronger Bagan defence.

Champions in group-B, Mohun Bagan will, however, miss the services of the livewire Amit Das, who has to sit out the match because of a red card booking in the last league match against Thailand’s Royal Air Force team.

JCT, who played their league matches in Siliguri, finished runners up in the four-team group-A. Top

Paes-Bhupathi duo upset

NEW YORK Nov 19 (PTI) — The star Indian pair of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi received a rude shock last night when the bottom seeded American duo of Donald Johnson and Fransisco Montana defeated them in gruelling three sets at the here.

The world number two Indians, who ended runners-up last year in their debut at the eight-pair championships, were in for a surprise when Johnson-Montana rallied from one set down to record a 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) victory in the league stage.

Paes-Bhupathi, who are logged in the tough group 'I' which includes top seeded Dutch pair Jacco Eltingh and Paul Haarhuis and Ellis Ferreira (South Africa)/Rick Leach (USA) started their campaign winning the first set easily at 6-3, but the Americans rebounded in the second.

Winning the second set at 6-4 after earning one break, Johnson-Montana stretched the Indians to the limit as the decider went with the serves till 6-6.

In the tie-break, the Americans, who got in here when the eighth best team of Jonas Bjorkman (Sweden) and Patrick Rafter (Australia) backed out following knee injury to the latter, combined well to upset the Indians.

Paes and Bhupathi still have a chance to make the semifinals. They need to win both their remaining matches against Eltingh-Haarhuis and Ferreira-Leach.

Eight teams compete in the round-robin format in two groups of four each. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals. All matches are best-of-three sets, with the final being best-of-five.

In other action last night, Elitingh-Haarhuis disposed of fifth seeds Ferreira-Leach 6-4, 6-4 in a group "I" match. It was the Dutch duo's final tournament as partners as 28-year-old Elitingh announced he would retire at the end of the year.

There was another upset, in group 'II', when the crack Australian combination of Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge was beaten in three sets by Frenchmen Olivier Delaitre and Fabrice Santoro.

The seventh ranked French pair rallied from one set down to beat the third seeds 6-7 (1/7) 6-3, 6-4.

The Woodies, who have had difficult time this year, were struggling with their form. The Aussies are making their eighth straight trip to the year-ending championship. This year they have won five titles from 10 finals.

In the last match of the day, fourth seeds Mark Knowles (Bahamas) and Daniel Nestor (Canada) defeated sixth ranked Australia-Czech Republic combination of Sandon Stolle and Cyril Suk 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.Top

Nonita Lal, Parnita, Shruti share lead
From Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI, Nov 19 — The excitement of three players, Nonita Lal Qureshi,Parnita Garewal and Shruti Khanna staying tied on the leaderboard (224) was pushed into background by Renu Puri who got a hole-in-one and City Honda car on the penultimate day of the 31st Ladies Northern India Open Amateur Golf Championship at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC) course here today.

Renu (Delhi) made a mighty tee-shot on par-3 5th hole. She walked up leisurely little realising that her superb drive had sneaked into the cup. Yesterday Ayesha Kapoor had a hole-in-one on the 17th.

Nonita played indifferently scoring five over 77. Parnita maintained her form with one over 73 while Shruti displayed her application as she returned the best card of one under 71.

Judging from their over-all display on three days, a thrilling finish is likely tomorrow. It will be interesting if Nonita succeeds to make it the 10th title, while Parnita will endeavour to retain the cup that she richly won. Shruti was consistent in her drives and putting and she could cause a surprise. Urvashi Sodhi, three behind at 227, might have a last laugh tomorrow.

Contrary to her usual play, Nonita was rather wayward in every thing that she did on the first nine. She could merely manage three bogeys on the 3rd, the 4th and the 9th to get 39. In back nine, she had four more bogeys but she managed two birdies to get home in 38. Her 77 gave her the aggregate of 224.

Parnita was out in 35 with two birdies and one bogey. But in back nine, she had a solitary birdies and three bogeys.

After getting bogeys on the 2nd and the 3rd, Shruti got going. She had two birdies to get level par score of 36 in her first nine. She muffed up the 10th but got two birdies to finish one under 35. Her card of 71 gave her an aggregate of 224, same as that of Nonita and Parnita.

Scores: 224 Nonita Lal Qureshi 75,72,77, Parnita Garewal 74,77,73, Shruti Khanna 76,77,71: 227 Urvashi Sodhi 75,79,73: 231 Anjali Chopra 79,75,77: 235 Lalita Balasubramaniam 76,79,80.Top

India record third victory

NEW DELHI, Nov 19 (PTI) — Balaji Damor struck thrice to apply brakes on New Zealand restricting them to 158 in 40 overs before man-of-the-match Ramkaran Sharma hit an unbeaten 84 runs to guide the hosts to an eight-wicket win in the Kanishka World Cup cricket for the blind at Palam grounds here today.

Chasing a modest victory target, favourites India emerged triumphant, their third straight win, thanks to a 137-run first wicket partnership between Manvender Singh and Sharma.

India raced to victory losing just two wickets and with 18.5 overs to spare after Manvender Singh (51) was stumped by Stanley Rury off Kevin Murray and Chandra Shekhar was run out cheaply for one.

Earlier, electing to bat, New Zealand started well putting on 85 runs for the opening stand, but Damor castled opener James Dunn (42) and when skipper Rury (38) was trapped plumb lbw by Vilesh Bhatt, the Kiwis scoring rate went down drastically.

Jason Griffiths (17 no) and Charles Tauhore (20 no) were the only other notable scorers as the visitors finished on 158 for five in allotted 40 overs. Damor (8-3-27-3) was pick of the Indian attack.

In the other ties - Australia scored their third straight win defeating Sri Lanka by six runs in a close match, and Pakistan beat South Africa by 63 runs.Top

Pak college win

PATIALA, Nov 19 (BOSR) — Although Aitchinson College Lahore, cruised to a comfortable 7-wicket win over hosts YPS, the talking point among the hundreds of cricket enthusiasts was neither the pyrotechnics of Ammar Azam nor the presence of Pakistani cricketing legend Javed Miandad's son, Junaid Miandad, on the field. What fascinated the spectators was the fact that sport, at any level, contributes more to cement human relations and understanding rather than doses of diplomacy or politics. The composition of the Aitchinson College team was enough to have the spectators which included former Punjab Chief Minister H.S. Brar, glued to their seats. In its ranks were Javed Miandad Junior, Mumraoz Salik and Raza Burki from the Imran Khans clan. Haris Bilal Afridi, a cousin of Shahid Afridi, Waleed Khalid son of the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Mr Khalid Mehmood and many others star sons. For the records, batting first YPS were all out for 124 while Aitchinson College overhauled the target easily by 7 wickets.
