ISLAMABAD, Nov 9 (PTI) Buoyed by the lifting of
economic sanctions Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
will ask us President Bill Clinton to ease military
embargo when the two leaders meet in Washington on
December 2. "Pakistan will take up the issue of
embargo on military purchases which are still subject to
sanctions during the forthcoming meeting between Mr
Sharif and Mr Clinton," Foreign Minister Sartaz Aziz
told reporters here yesterday. He expressed the hope that
the "USA will also lift sanctions on military
purchases."Jail

JAKARTA, Nov 9 (ANI) Over 100 Indonesian prisoners
escaped from a jail in southern Sumatra late last night.
Media reports said the prisoners first broke open the
prison gate and then hid themselves in a neighbouring
mosque. No casualties were immediately reported. The
police, however, claimed that three of the fugitives had
been recaptured.
Indian fishermen
KARACHI, Nov
9 (ANI) All imprisoned Indian fishermen and their
boats will be released tomorrow and handed over to a
visiting Indian delegation, an official of the Fishermen
Cooperative Society of Pakistan (FCS) said here today. A
nine-member delegation of the Indian Fishermen
Association (IFA), led by the Deputy Director, Fisheries,
Government of Gujarat, Mr J.J. Parmar, has arrived here
from Mumbai for the purpose. As many as 195 Indian
fishermen were arrested for illegal fishing in Pakistani
waters. Thirty-one boats were also seized.
Rain havoc
CHENNAI, Nov 9 (UNI) The torrential rain that
battered the city and other parts of Tamil Nadu since
October 1 has claimed 49 lives, including that of 10
women and 19 children, Revenue Minister Nanjil K.
Manoharan said today. Mr Manoharan, who reviewed with
officials the devastation caused by rain and the progress
of relief works being undertaken, in a statement here
said the deaths were mostly due to wall collapse and
drowning. While the families of 15 victims have been
given a compensation of Rs 2.25 lakh, the families of
other victims were being provided compensation, he said.
HC reserves order
on Laloo's bail
PATNA, Nov 9
(PTI) The Patna High Court today reserved till
tomorrow its order on the pleas of former Chief Ministers
Laloo Prasad Yadav and Jagannath Mishra for regular bail
in a conspiracy angle case of the fodder scam. Justice
M.Y. Iqbal of the court also reserved his order on
applications for regular bail, filed by the RJD MLA, R.K.
Rana, and the former Bihar minister Vidyasagar Nishad in
the case. Earlier, opposing their prayers for bail, CBI
standing counsel Rakesh Kumar charged RJD president Laloo
Yadav and the Bihar Jan Congress chief patron Jagannath
Mishra with having colluded with other scamsters in
defrauding the state exchequer.
EC to visit MP
NEW DELHI, Nov 9 (UNI) Election Commissioner
G.V.G. Krishnamurty will visit Madhya Pradesh for three
days from tomorrow to review the arrangements made for a
free and fair Assembly election in the state. He will
have extensive discussions for this purpose with the
state Chief Secretary, the Home Secretary, the Chief
Electoral Officer, the DGP and other senior officers to
review the preparedness for the poll. Law and order and
security measures were also on the agenda, an official
release said. He will also make "flied visits"
to Jaipur, Jagdalpur, Jabalpur, Indore and Gwalior and
would have meeting with senior district and divisional
officers there, the release added.
