JAMMU, Dec 22 — American Senator, Tim Johnson has, in a letter to the Indian Prime Minister demanded immediate measures for the rehabilitation and resettlement of Kashmiri displaced families, preferably in a newly autonomous region.

4 militants killed in encounters

JAMMU, Dec 22 (PTI) — Security forces have killed four militants, destroyed five hideouts of militants and seized a huge quantity of arms and ammunition in Jammu and Kashmir since last evening.

A hardcore foreign militant was killed in an encounter with security forces at Jamola Gallar village in Rajouri district this morning. Other militants escaped. One person was also injured in the cross firing. One AK-47 rifle, four magazines along with live rounds and some explosives were seized from the area,an official spokesman said here today.

In another incident, Rashtriya Rifle troops killed two militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen after a brief encounter in general area of Ghoru in Gandoh tehsil of Doda district yesterday. One AK-47 rifle, one pistol, three magazines and one grenade were seized from encounter scene, he said.

Meanwhile, the police seized an arms consignment in Doonga village of Hiranagar tehsil of Kathua district during the period. The consignment, which was smuggled into the Indian territory by Pakistani saboteurs on Sunday night, included two AK-type rifles, one magazine, several hundred ammunition rounds, explosives, documents and a Pathan dress, the police said.

The spokesman said security forces killed a foreign mercenary, Gul Daraz Khan, alias "Behroz Inqalabi’’, of Soban Sarhad (Pakistan) in an armed clash at Brakpora forest in Anantnag district of South Kashmir last night.

An AK assault rifle, two magazines with 20 rounds and two hand grenades were recovered from the slain militant.

A militant surrendered to the security forces at Bandipora in Baramulla district of North Kashmir and handed over an AK assault rifle, five magazines, 30 rounds and a wireless set to the authorities, the spokesman said.

Three security personnel received bullet injuries in a militant ambush in the Safapora area of Baramulla district last night, the spokesman said, adding that the security forces fired back, but the militants escaped.

He said security forces smashed five militant hideouts during search operations in the Pandodus forest of Kupwara, Hathlanga in Baramulla, Duniwar, Parimpora and Andwari in Srinagar, yesterday. A rocket projectile gun, four rpg rockets, an AK assault rifle, a pistol, 15 kg of explosives, five grenades and some ammunition were seized from the militant hideouts, the spokesman said.

He said security forces also seized an AK assault rifle, a wireless set and some ammunition during search operations in Anantnag district last evening. Top


 

US Senator backs Pandits' demand

JAMMU, Dec 22 — American Senator, Tim Johnson has, in a letter to the Indian Prime Minister demanded immediate measures for the rehabilitation and resettlement of Kashmiri displaced families, preferably in a newly autonomous region.

Mr Johnson said as the centre had decided to carve out three new states and asked whether a separate state could not be created for Kashmiri Pandits hounded out of the Valley by militants.

Mr Johnson is the first foreign leader to ask India to create a state for the dislodged Pandits.

He expressed concern over the plight of Kashmiri Pandits languishing in temporary shelters for a decade.

Mr Johnson was briefed by Mr Jagan Kaul, a consultant to the United Nations that homelessness had imposed extreme conditions upon the Kashmiri migrants.Top
