Explosives seized from train
GUWAHATI, Dec 2 (PTI) — In one of the largest seizures of explosives in recent times, the Army here has found among other things 2,840 gelatine sticks and 3,400 detonators from two compartments of the Brahmaputra Express which arrived here from New Delhi yesterday. The seizures also include Army uniforms and 26 bundles of fuse wires, Major Ramesh Menon of the 21, Mountain Division, which made the seizure, said today.

Meeting
CHENNAI, Dec 2 (PTI) — AIADMK chief Jayalalitha has no plans to visit New Delhi tomorrow to take part in a meeting in which Congress president Sonia Gandhi is taking part, an AIADMK press note said here today.

"Fire" screening
MUMBAI, Dec 2 (PTI) — Scores of women members of the Shiv Sena today stormed two cinema houses here and stopped screening of the controversial movies "Fire", protesting against the "unwarranted vulgarity" in the film. Raising slogans, agitators assembled outside cinema halls in Goregaon and South Mumbai and burnt down the posters of the film.

25 dead in Vietnam
HANOI, Dec 2 (AFP) — At least 25 persons were killed when a gold mine in northern Vietnam collapsed, a report said today. The Lao Dong newspaper said heavy rainfall had caused erosion and the eventual collapse of the mine in a remote mountainous area in the northern province of Thai Binh.

Visas overstayed
BANGKOK, Dec 2 (Reuters) — The Thai police said today four Pakistanis it feared had been plotting a bomb attack during the Asian Games were not terrorists but businessmen who had overstayed their visas. Assistant National Police Chief Lieut-Col Thawatchai Pailee told a news conference that suspected bomb-making components, which police earlier said had been seized from suspects, had not belonged to them.

IMPHAL, Dec 2 (PTI) — Unidentified gunmen opened fire at the private residence of Manipur Minister of Planning and Revenue Elangbam Kunjeshwar Singh at the Wangkhei Yonglan Leirak area in Imphal East district last night, official sources said today.

3 killed
NEW DELHI, Dec 2 (UNI) — Three persons were killed and at least 15 injured, two seriously, when a four-storeyed building under construction collapsed in the Lal Kuan area of the walled city today.

Mizo ministry
AIZAWL, Dec 2 (PTI) — A 10-member ministry led by Mizo National Front (MNF) president Zoramthanga, comprising five members each from the MNF and the Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) would be sworn in tomorrow, official sources said here toady.

12 massacred
ALGIERS, Dec 2 (AFP) — As many as 12 persons were murdered by suspected armed Islamists west of Algiers overnight, security services announced today. The attack was carried out at Sidi Rached, near Tipaza, 70 km west of the ALgerian capital.

DHAKA, Dec 2 (ANI) — Thousands of opposition activists, protesting against "undemocratic" government policies, launched a day-long fast here today. The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Khaleda Zia led the rally on Dhaka's Paltan Maidan avenue.

Pak missile
ISLAMABAD, Dec 2 (Reuters) — Pakistani scientists have built the subcontinent’s most modern surface-to-surface missile and are awaiting a government signal to launch it, the head of a missile project today was quoted as saying. Dr Samar Mubarakmand, head of the missile project of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, was quoted by The News as saying that the 759-km range Shaheen was three times more powerful than India’s Prithvi missile.

No talks: Lanka
COLOMBO, Dec 2 (PTI) — Sri Lanka has rejected LTTE chief V. Prabhakaran’s offer for unconditional peace talks saying that Colombo would not forgive the rebels and enter into negotiations with "a pack of murderers", a state-owned newspaper reported here today. "We cannot forgive the LTTE for what they are doing to their own young people, Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar said ruling out peace talks until the rebel group was militarily contained, the Daily News quoted him as saying.

Petitions rejected
CHENNAI, Dec 2 (PTI) — Two petitions filed by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha pertaining to the Tansi land deal case were today dismissed by a Special Judge here. Mr P. Anbahagan, trying cases of corruption committed during the AIADMK regime, dismissed the petitions seeking to know from the police whether or not it had relied on the Governor’s sanction in prosecuting her and questioning the cognisance taken on the charge-sheet filed against her in the case, in which her close friend Sasikala is a co-accused.

Urgent notice
KOCHI, Dec 2 (PTI) — The Kerala High Court today issued urgent notices to the CBI Director and the State Home Secretary on a petition seeking CBI investigation into the corruption case against veteran Congress leader K. Karunakaran. The notices were issued when the petition, moved by Nawab Rajendran, came up before Justice C.S. Rajan. The petitioner alleged Karunakaran had amassed wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income.
