die in Karnataka road mishaps
BANGALORE, Dec 1 (UNI) Eighteen persons, including
seven children and eight women, were killed and 24 others
were injured, in two road accidents in Karnataka today.
The police said 13 labourers, including six children and
five women were killed and 16 others injured, when a
stone-laden truck in which they were travelling
overturned and fell into a gorge near Nandur village,
about 5 km from Gulbarga. In another mishap, five
persons, including a child and three women, were killed
and eight others injured, when a private bus collided
with another bus near Channarayapatna, about 175 km from
here. Autorickshaw
strike
MUMBAI, Dec 1 (PTI) Nearly 1 lakh autorickshaws
remained off the roads today after the operators, owing
allegiance to the Mumbai Autorickshaw Union (MAU),
resorted to a strike to press for an increase in fares.
They were demanding for a hike of Rs 1.50 in the minimum
fares. Describing the strike as "total and
peaceful" so far, the unions President, Mr
Sharad Rao, said further course of action would be
decided after a meeting with the Chief Minister.
487 docs suspended
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Dec 1 (PTI) The authorities of
the Medical College Hospital here have suspended 487
junior doctors, including PG students who failed to
report for work in wake of their strike. As per the
directions of Keralas Health Minister A.C.
Shanmughadas, the medicos were evicted from the hostels
and their rooms were sealed, hospital sources said. Only
226 out of the 713 House Surgeons and PG students
reported for duty yesterday and thus medical services at
the medical college and hospital remained paralysed for
the fourth consecutive day.
Earthquake in
China
BEIJING, Dec 1 (PTI) An earthquake measuring 5.1
on the Richter scale jolted the city of Xuanwei in
south-west Chinas Yunnan province today. The quake
hit the city of Xuanwei in north-eastern Yunnan at 1 p.m.
IST. However, there is no immediate report of any
casualty or damage, XINHUA news agency reports. According
to the Chinese seismological networks, the epicentre of
the quake was located at 26.4 degrees North latitude and
10 4.1 degrees East longitude.
Blast accused held
COIMBATORE, Dec 1 (UNI) The Special Investigation
Team (SIT) of the Crime Branch (CID) of the Tamil Nadu
police arrested a 22-year-old youth, Sahul Hameed, alias
Thambi at Vellapuzha, in Palakkad, last night, in
connection with the February 14 serial bomb blasts here.
The DIG Mr Thangarajan told mediapersons here today that
Hameed, who was also an accused in the murder of a
prominent Muslim leader, Kottai Ameer, was involved in
the manufacture of various types of bombs. He was working
as an office-boy in the office of the banned "Al
Umma" here.
9 of marriage
party killed
ALIGARH, Dec 1 (PTI) Nine members of a marriage
party were killed and six others seriously injured in a
jeep-truck collision near here last night, the District
Magistrate, Mr K.S. Atoria said today. The accident
occurred in Ladhoa village on the GT Road.
IRA bill on
priority list
NEW DELHI, Dec 1 (PTI) In a swift volte face, the
government today said that the Insurance Regulatory
Authority (IRA) Bill to open up the sector for private
and foreign investment would be introduced in Parliament
in the current session itself. "IRA is on the
priority of the second list of bills, which we want to
bring in the Winter Session of Parliament," the
Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Mr Madan Lal Khurana
said.
500 detonators
seized
NAGERCOIL, Dec 1 (PTI) Nearly 500 detonators and
25 gelatine sticks have been seized from four persons
here, police sources said today. The detonators were
seized from two persons travelling in an autorickshaw at
Melanukulam near Puthukadai yesterday. The two told the
police that they had purchased the detonators from Hindu
Munnani leaders of the Munchirai area. Following this the
police raided the house of the alleged suppliers of the
detonators and seized 25 gelatine sticks.
Iraq's new food
plan
BAGHDAD, Dec 1 (AFP) Iraq has handed its new food
distribution plan to the United Nations, despite
complaining that the "oil-for-food" accord
fails to meet its humanitarian needs, UN spokesman said
here today. Mr George Somerwill, spokesman for the UN
humanitarian programme, said Iraq delivered the new plan
on Saturday at the United Nations. An additional 1,500
pages of annexes on food, medicine and other supplies
were handed over to the offices of the UN humanitarian
coordinator in Baghdad, Mr Hans Von Sponeck.
Economic blockade
begins
RANCHI, Dec 1 (UNI) The pro-Jharkhand forces
sponsored 100-hour economic blockade began early this
morning amid tight security in 18 districts of south
Bihar. According to official sources no untoward incident
was reported from any part of Jharkhand. Red alert has
been sounded in this tribal belt during the blockade.
Statehood bills
NEW DELHI, Dec 1 (PTI) The Bills for formation of
Uttaranchal, Chattisgarh and full statehood to Delhi are
likely to be deferred in the current session of
Parliament, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mr Madan
Lal Khurana, indicated here today. "Since all three
bills have to be brought together, therefore it was not
on the priority list of the government", he told
mediapersons.
