Ship with 17 Indian crew bombed
CHENNAI, Aug 14 (PTI) — Sri Lankan Air Force planes today bombed and sunk a merchant ship with 17 Indian and four Lankan crew onboard after it was hijacked by the LTTE off the northeastern coast of Mullaithivu, 290 km from Colombo . Israeli-built KFIR jets bombed the "M.V. Princes Cash," which was carrying 6000 tonnes of food and other essential goods to strife-torn Jaffna province, setting it on fire around 3 p.m. The fate of the crew was not known yet, official sources said. The Lankan planes bombed the ship when LTTE activists were offloading its cargo just outside Mullaithivu Port and sunk it, the sources said."It was more or less sunk and only the super structure can be seen when last reports came in," they said.The bombs hit the front part of the ship resulting in a series of explosions.

MIG crashes
JAIPUR, Aug 14 (PTI) — A MIG 21 Air Force plane crashed near Harrupia village in Barmer district today, the police said here. However, pilot C.G. Trivedi bailed out safely even as the falling debris of the plane injured a passer-by who was admitted to the Jassai Army Hospital here. The police said the plane had taken off from Uttarlai airfield this morning on a regular practice flight but later caught fire possibly due to some technical snag.

11 civilians killed
ALGIERS, Aug 14 (Reuters) — Eleven civilians were killed in Algeria in two attacks overnight, south-west of the capital, Algerian security forces said today. The official news agency APS carried a security forces statement saying that seven had been killed "in a cowardly way" — the usual Algerian term for victims who have their throats cut in attacks blamed by officials on Muslim rebels. The security forces said the seven were killed during the same night, 130 km from Algiers. Four others were killed during the same night in the same province.

‘Jai Hanuman’
NEW DELHI, Aug 14 (PTI) — The Delhi High Court today reserved its order on a petition by actor producer Sanjay Khan challenging Prasar Bharati’s decision to terminate the telecast of his mythological TV serial, "Jai Hanuman", on Doordarshan. Mr Justice Anil Dev Singh reserved the order on conclusion of the arguments on Khan’s petition, filed in June after Doordarshan issued an order, refusing extension to the serial beyond the stipulated 52 episodes.Top
